Does it depend on the variety?  How best to go about such a "dwarfing" program?  If there are no other white sapotes in the neighborhood, would you need to plant two trees, different varieties?

My house uses well water for the sprinkler system.  This is water that turns everything brown--walls, sidewalks, etc.--so, I've been told, it must have a high iron content.  Could this water have an effect on young trees or other plants?  Can it cause any sort of nutrient imbalance?  Should I have any hesitation about using it on my trees after I plant them?  I have the option of using municipal water.  Thanks for your help.

(What grows easily in SoFlo for us!  SoCal may differ.)

My list....
First Tier: Mango, Avocado, Banana, Papaya, Soursop, Atemoya, Jaboticaba, Pineapple.
Second Tier: White Sapote, Sapodilla, Persimmon, Lychee, Jackfruit, Sugar Apple (annona), Mamey Sapote.
Third Tier: Carambola, Caimito, Loquat, Guava, Lime.

If I were in SoCal, I'd probably assign persimmon to the top tier and lemon, tangerine, and loquat to the second tier.  In Central and South America (and Asia), other fruit would be added to this list.

What are yours?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting Soursop
« on: December 25, 2025, 01:05:21 PM »
Does anyone have any experience grafting soursop?  Is it easy to do?  I believe that most soursop trees are grown from seed, but there's a tree with outstanding fruit that I want to reproduce to take with me to my new house.  Also...a happy and blessed Christmas to all the Forum Family! :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Late Soursop
« on: December 01, 2025, 10:26:22 PM »
Last year the fruit on this tree ripened in May/June. This year it didn't start until midsummer and continued through fall. It's excellent quality--low fiber--and should probably be propagated.

Which is the better one to grow for an early mango?  Which one has better flavor, in general, or is more consistent in flavor?  Is Pickering fruit larger than Dwarf Hawaiian?  How do their growth characteristics differ?  Is DH only for coastal areas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida Winter Weather for 2025/26
« on: August 25, 2025, 10:48:24 AM »
The Old Farmers Almanac says colder than average, with the chilliest periods in mid- to late December and most of January, and wet.
The Farmers Almanac says average temperatures, but also wet.
So only time will tell.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When will my pineapple plants have fruit?
« on: July 31, 2025, 12:51:01 PM »
I grew plants from the tops of pineapples I purchased last July, first in pots and then in the ground.  They grew very slowly over the winter and set no fruit.  I moved them to a much better location several weeks ago, and growth really took off.  Do you think they will set fruit next summer (but not anytime before)?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Dupuis Avocado Scions?
« on: June 01, 2025, 09:25:04 AM »
Does anyone in this neck of the woods--M/D, Broward, PBC--have this tree?  ( And how much do you love it? ??? :) )

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Moving Avocado Trees

What do you think the success rate is for digging up and re-planting three-year-old avocado trees of the West Indian race?  Any special instructions to improve chances of success?

From your experience or to your knowledge, which avocado varieties are the most tolerant of heat and sun in Florida?  I would definitely put Monroe on this list, but would leave Day off.

It's been said that Hak Ip and Sweetheart are the same variety of lychee.  Is this true?  Does anyone have experience planting both?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Semil 55 Avocado

Is anyone growing this one?  One commenter on YT (Fruitful Trees) says there's a tree at Fruit and Spice Park, and it's the best Florida avocado he's ever tasted.

Bring it on!  I can't help but think this will help with the 2025 mango crop.  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What happened to my poor avocado tree?
« on: November 24, 2024, 12:56:52 PM »
This Simmonds avocado tree was looking fine and healthy 4 months ago.  Then little burn spots started to appear in the middle of some leaves.  Now it has progressed to this stage.  What do you think could be happening?  This doesn't look like laurel wilt, and my Monroe tree hasn't been affected, nor have a dozen other avocado trees in the neighbhorhood.  I have been using city water regularly, but not overwatering.  Could it be something in the water?  But my other tree looks fine.  Any ideas, insights, or suggestions would be helpful.  I'd hate to lose the tree and have to start over with another.

Current track shows Sarasota landfall, exiting Florida through Brevard County.  I've read that almost every building on Anna Maria Island has already been destroyed by Helene.  Clean-up will have to start all over again from scratch.  It seems surreal.

Let's say someone had an empty yard and wanted to grow a nice variety of mango trees.  I'll start the list of "compact" trees with Pickering, Dwarf Hawaiian, Carrie, Honey Kiss, Little Gem, CeciLove, Piņa Colada, Orange Sherbet, Neelam, Amrapali, Ice Cream, Jehangir, Sugarloaf.  Anything else you can think of that's worth growing and could be kept at 10 feet and produce well (not an inferior variety like Cogshall)?  If I could get Alex to comment, I'd be very happy.  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How common is it for a lychee tree to recover?
« on: September 21, 2024, 04:46:19 PM »
The lychee tree in my neighborhood had an erinose mite infestation earlier this year, but in the past few months it has had plenty of healthy new growth.  It seems to have recovered.  Is this uncommon?  What about future infestations?  Unfortunately it hasn't had fruit in the last few years due to the warm winters.

This variety was hard to find, but it's supposed to be better than Red Lady.  I bought seeds and started some plants.  I have an extra plant, which I just put in a 3-gal. pot, so it could stay in the pot for at least two months.  $25.  Local pick-up only.

Other than what have become the standards, such as Simmonds, Pollock, Lula, Choquette, Miguel, Catalina, Brogdon, Day, Marcus, Donnie, and Oro Negro.  Anything that has really wowed you and that you endorse?  Julian Lara and Alex Salazar both offer a lot of varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please ID This Mango
« on: May 21, 2024, 07:39:56 PM »

The tree was planted about five years ago by a neighbor who has since sold the house and moved on, and I never asked her what variety it is.  I'm thinking it could be Nam Doc Mai, but I know there are others with more mango intelligence than me, so what do you think it is?  They should start ripening in about two weeks.

I'm in north Broward County very near Boca.  I could give you Raja Puri pups.  I also have Goldfinger, but no pups yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How many avocados should be left on tree?
« on: April 20, 2024, 12:03:41 PM »
Simmonds is a precocious tree.  This one is less than 2 years old, planted as a small 3 gal. tree. It's about 8 ft. tall now. I'm counting 9 fruitlets at this time. Should I let it keep them all?!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beauty of Avocado Leaves

I'm finding that my Monroe and Simmonds trees have leaves that are particularly striking.
