I might go to his place.  It is only 15 mi.  I will ask him some questions first.  He also lists it in facebook, and said 'do not ask if it is sweet ...'

Kind of off the topic.  This is my longan tree in the front yard, with fruit branches reaching the sidewalk.  No one is picking any of them.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Venmo, zelle Paypal?
« on: January 29, 2025, 02:25:58 PM »
Amazon used to accept Venmo, but not anymore.
Ebay accepts Venmo.

I also have Venmo.  When people sends me money, the money stays in Venmo.  I then use those money to buy stuffs.  So when I'm out of Venmo money, I stop buying stuffs.  This is my way to watch my spending.  Spend only what you have.

Mine is flowering too.

Alex, I did in the past.  A lot of the current Thai/Taiwan varieties are most likely spreaded by him.

Note: plants are extremely undersized.  For example, his 5 gallon plant is a little smaller than 1 gallon plant.  He also do not ship in pots, removing significant dirt, almost bare root.

Asia might have good varieties as well.  If you have problem with shipping to US, follow the birds, lol.

All the Vietnamese nurseries in CA do ship the plants.

For what its worth, I believe Marta (Really Good Plants) mentioned in one of her blogs that her Yangmei are grafted on M. pennsylvanica.

That is good to know.

The reasons that I went with pennsylvanica are because they are the cheapest ($7 per plant and free shipping) and readily available. I also thought that if they can handle Pennsylvania coldness, they should be able to handle Cali coldness.

I bought 8 bare root plants. Two died early after potted.  The remaining seems to be affected by cold because the leaves turn purple.  Maybe because they are young or the leaves are thin.

Ruby Taiwan has couple seeds and round leaves.

I saw his items on Ebay as well.  I don't think he is selling the real varieties.   On top of it, since he does not provide proper legal paper to import on his items, I do not want to buy any.

Thank Simon et al.  I'm intended for home use.  The label that comes with the rootstocks has the word, 'bush' on it.  So it might be a smaller type.

Simon, thank for the update.  They look so healthy.

I bought a few myrica pensylvanica for rootstock. Almost a year now, and they still pencil size and about a foot tall.  Base on what you have right now, what is your ranking on the rootstocks?

Kaz, I have not tried Red Malaysian or the Carmine type.

DA#3 is the current hype because:
1-sweet , claim up to 22 brix.
2-crunchy
3-taste
4-less seeds
5-color

Note: I have not eaten the fruits.  I only saw  reviewed videos.

Greenerpasteur, based on the picture, your friend's DA#3 has a lot of seeds than the ones I have seen the review.

GrowerA, I agree with you.  Here is a recent video compared it to DA#3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr9hE1ZD9kA&ab_channel=VietGardenCalifornia

DA#3 is a very sweet and crunchy type.  Nông Dân Cali,Viet Garden California, and Mimosa nurseries have them now.

22
The new coming ones are two expensive currently.
1-red dang ayothaya #3 (black diamond).
2-red kimju #5.
3-red emperor.

23
Stephiebby, I ordered on ebay many years ago when that variety just came out.

When you order, make sure they are:
1- grafted plant, not from seed.
2- they provide phytosanitary to avoid confiscation by USDA, who will (randomly?) go through ebay to see whom imported plants without proper paper after the purchases had been done.

Many Vietnamese nurseries in CA have Taiwan ruby seedless that is either the same(or almost identical).

I have not eating the fruits for decades.  I remembered that every morning, I went to look for ripe fruits dropping from the tree.  If I picked unripe fruits, I removed the
fruit stems to bleed the sap. It was an unknown variety.

Coconut, thank for sharing the info.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jujube graft or rootstock
« on: December 16, 2024, 06:33:42 PM »
K-Rimes, Chinese jujube is extremely tough to kill.

Imo, cut to 5 feet and graft from there.  In the farms, they want to form a willow/umbrella shape about six feet tall, using supports, for easy harvesting.
