Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Alkaline soil mango planting
« on: February 05, 2025, 09:21:14 AM »
you can use any of those amendments, I stay away from Aluminum as it can be toxic at high levels
(I'm assuming you're using the type that goes in water purification systems that might be ok). Mangoes will grow in a very high ph environment, they do just fine in the limestone of Miami-Dade county. I would go for a tiger 90 amendment- then soil test every 6-12 months and see what the PH/ mineral availability trend is. The leaves will turn yellow in a very high-ph situation

Most of the trees that didn't flower 4-6 weeks ago are now breaking buds, still need another month or so to judge the season here.

not sure, it's possible. There are many strains of Colletrotrichum fungus. I know the timing was poor with the extended overcast, drizzly rain. I'm sure it's present on a microscopic level on almost every tree- even ones that don't show symptoms. My bloom that emerged in the past week is fairly clean, and isn't being consumed like those were.

yeah, most likely the extended cold temps killed the flowers, and opportunistic disease moved in-. I'm seeing the same thing on a lot of trees. I removed all the flowers that opened early on mine, everything that emerged after about 1/26 looks healthy and is setting fruit. I'll treat with Nordox once flowers are done

I've seen snakes in the grove, I leave them alone -even the venomous ones- they're one of the most important predators of pests, almost all of them are pretty reclusive.

I cut off all dead diseased bloom damaged from the cold - also cut off all diseased bloom from trees I won't let fruit anyway, less inoculant in the air. I'm getting bud activity from some of the varieties that are lagging.

Cac, Orange Sherbet, and PPK are the only holdouts strangely enough, but all three flushed in October

same as the others in this thread, they don't farm pests on my trees, but they will on citrus for some reason. Tanglefoot works well if you have a couple trees , but if you're growing citrus- you have a ton of other problems to worry about.

yes, do not spray it on open bloom, and please use eye protection- it's nasty stuff

Mine did flower fairly early and is just starting to set fruit, but like you said the cold overcast weather didn't help, flowers didn't get pollinated, and now anthracnose is the worst I've seen it. Pineapple pleasure did try to set fruit last year, but it was too small. We'll see what happens in a month

Tempting, but I can't justify the purchase. I wish them all the luck though.

Pineapple collectors are the most stingy people with sharing cultivars, so this might be your best bet to get the real thing.

I've got a little anthracnose on blooms- I'm hoping it's arrested from the spraying I did the other day, fruit set is mostly going smoothly, I expect next week I'll have to start watering once the fruit begins to properly set. Venus in particular has set a ton of baby fruit set so far- first time variety for me.

Unfortunately it looks like the extended cold has resulted in a ton of flowers just shriveling up, and not being pollinated.

Look like emerging flowers to me. They usually start to bloom around this time

That's anthracnose, if all the other panicles are ok, I would just remove it.

I stopped spraying for PM a couple weeks ago when most of the flowers opened. I haven't used sulfur yet, but most say to avoid spraying open bloom

If it's cold damage from what I've observed- flowers will shrivel up usually by the cluster and be brownish- anthracnose usually starts on the panicle or the emerging flowers as small black spots, which become lesions and spread to the panicles themselves, the diseased panicles will be black in appearance.

Cosmetically, it reminds me of black rot on grapes- for me it usually starts on leaves as dark spots in late summer then spores emerge later on flowers and fruit.

It seems to be worse when hurricanes are bad which is practically every year now, but in 2023 when hurricane season was fairly quiet here, I hardly saw any anthracnose- and I didn't spray.

Probably anything from the Eugenia genus or coffea plants.
Evergreen, and generally form a dense smaller tree/shrub.

Loquats and sapodillas are pretty, but can get scraggly as they get big

Some mangoes are also pretty ornamental. Pickering, ice cream, pettigrew,  creme brulee and giselle are standouts for me

Once the disease works in, you can't reverse the damage. I sprayed yesterday after a week of constant "misting" rain and cold weather, which probably resulted in this outbreak.

I found a few affected panicles and removed them as well

looks like anthracnose, since you're spraying rotate the copper with an organic or inorganic fungicide. If it spreads to the actual flowers, it's usually too late, you can try cutting the infected panicles off may get a rebloom.

copper every 2 weeks should be enough with another fungicide in between. Most people make the mistake of just letting anthracnose go, unfortunately it's hard to control once it gets established on trees. fortunately the weather looks like it's going to be dry for a bit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango blossom frost damage?
« on: January 26, 2025, 08:38:25 PM »
If they got frost, the current flowers will be toasted, they might emerge but they will almost be in suspended animation then drop off, there will be new panicles that will probably emerge on the buds behind that.

Only got down to 39 by me last night. I am noticing a little fruit set, but the very cold and wet January seems to have put the trees in a kind of stasis. Trees with emerging panicles have continued as normal

Should know in another 7-10 days if there is a decent fruit set or not.  There's still a ton of hurdles from having flowers to a ripe fruit in your hand

The next week looks like we're finally normalizing weather wise. The sunshine should improve things

I've only had one and it was pretty good. Not the easiest tree to grow in FL. Im growing one from Hawaii called paomaho, its grown at a glacial pace so far

Calusa- it's hard to tell on the first photo, the 2nd is anthracnose, but it doesn't seem too bad. When it gets bad the tips and margins of the leaves will brown and shrivel. You can treat it with various copper and organic/inorgsnic products if you search around.

I'm now avoiding spraying trees with open bloom with oil, not so much for the pollen, but the pollinators, it also works as an insecticide and will kill them.

I love going there. I'm waiting until spring to put my latest additions in the ground. Lately, I've been losing the little ones to root rot. Good luck with yours!

JMS stylet oil, I have a decent amount of open bloom right now, I haven't see any hints of PM so far. Currently doing a tandem with Anthracnose control

I got 43 yesterday and 42 today as my lowest temps, I'm getting 42 tomorrow, everything looks ok, except all the pollinators are asleep, might have to hand pollinate . I have everything I need in hand now so if goes below 40- the cloth goes on.
