That's a very good assessment of the two fruits SD Dan. I thought persimmons would come out on top in terms of flavor based on my narrow sampling of sapodillas, but in terms of production, sapodilla, at least the silas wood variety, might win out.

Okay, I guess they were probably not picked at optimum ripeness. If they were, how would they compare to persimmons? Better or worse? The two fruits are very similar to me - both with just a lot of sweetness.

That's an interesting comparison, I find the sweetness to be similar in intensity to a fully ripe astringent type persimmon but in a different way. The sapodilla is like brown sugar whereas persimmon is like honey/nectar. I think persimmons have a bit more complementing flavors that make the extreme sweetness more enjoyable. Texture is also quite different, persimmon is soft but jelly like and sapodilla is melting but grainy like a real ripe pear.

I personally put persimmons higher, but they're both good fruits and the flavors are unique.

Bought a silas wood but thinking of grafting on a makok at some point. The silas wood was priced too good to pass...

Woah, $66, after shipping, for 2.5lbs?! Sorry for sounding cheap, but after that last batch, it's a little too much. I'll wait for your full review on the fruit and save the dough for the tree if it's worthwhile. :)

Thats where i got mine, but then it became unavailable. Sir graftalot go there right away and order now so you can taste this variety yourself

Ok no problem. So far i will say, classic brown sugar taste, minimal grit, i would recommend. The fruit are very small compared to other varieties

Took the plunge and bought a grafted silas wood. It's only a one gallon but heard this one is very precocious.

Always appreciate your insights on these things, Ryan. In your opinion, Silas Woods or Makok for our environment?

It’s a pretty good fruit,
But I have trouble eating more than one just pure sweet
I had an excellent one from a friend in FL I forgot the variety.
I am a fan of gritty ones as it provides some depth too.
It’s not tough to grow and will do well in a pot
Definitely recommend growing it.
Low key can do any variety you like
I’ve been with Alano
I think the really good one I had was hasya if I’m not mistaken
Trees fruit couple years from a three gallon tree
I lost mine this winter though to a freeze.

Looks like someone from UPS just stole my mango tree from Florida! I'm with SHV in that my packages may get driven around the country for a few patriotic laps before getting to my door, but I always get my parcels with USPS; things never go vanished like this...

That's great. Looking forward to your review. A smaller fruit might be better for my growing environment - maybe it won't need as long of a hang time on the tree to ripen.

I actually just ordered some makok fruit and it arrived yesterday. Once its ready to eat i will let you know. The fruit is a lot smaller than other sapodillas

Hi everyone, anyone has a couple of pounds of properly ripened Makok and/or Silas Wood sapodilla fruits available for sale? Thanks.

Thanks so much, Julie. Do you know anything about the other dwarf variety - Makok?

There's a buy/sell section of this forum.  Try posting there, maybe someone will reply.  I don't have Silas Woods and have never tasted it.  I've read the taste is more sweet and less complex and that the tree is very productive and produces small fruit.

I was thinking of getting a Silas Woods tree, but have second thoughts after tasting the fruit. Anyone has a couple of fruits of this variety I can purchase and try?

Order from one of the online sellers mentioned above.  Sapodilla is so good.  It's not a fringe fruit that only a few like.

I got them off of etsy. They didn't mention the cultivar but the seller's from Florida.

You got bad fruit. Where did you order it from? Try Lara Farms or Ericsson Farms.

Sapodilla is delicious. I've never had one that wasn't at least sweet and juicy. This should give you some idea on flavor, sweetness and texture:

Wow, that's a high praise for what I have eaten. I might give them another chance.

Naga Gardens also sells exceptional sapodillas. Give them a try.

I’ve eaten hundreds of sapodillas in my life. Have two trees in the backyard. As many of the other posters have indicated, you got fruit that was picked too early. A properly ripened sapodilla is not astringent, not latex-y, and does not make your lips stick together. IMO it’s one of the best fruits that exists.

Sorry, didn't mean to poke fun. Vegans, to me, are the closest we have to saints. It's just that I have tried fruits/vegetables recommended by known vegans and none of those things I was able to stomach (like raw moringa leaves).

I don't understand what vegans have to do with ya'll getting bad fruit.

I have like 10 of these. Been sampling them from just barely give to the touch to practically falling apart. In nowhere in between were they palatable.

Sounds like you don't know when they aren't ripe.

Thats what they taste like when unripe.

How much riper does it need? It's soft already, but it tastes so bad!

sapodilla can be very unpleasantly astringent when not ripened properly, had bad luck with a bunch up here til I found one that was alright. my understanding is that some variety lack the graininess, I think butterscotch is one of them? the latexy mouthfeel might be a feature or maybe it would go away with ripeness

I recently purchased a couple of pounds of sapodilla fruits online. I made sure they were soft to the touch before eating. These things have the worst traits of persimmon, pear, and star apple - they were astringent, grainy, and made my lips stick together. Are they all like this? I was thinking of getting a tree, I'm so glad I tried the fruit before taking the plunge.

Sounds like a winner plant.

These fruits go from unripe to ripe to overripe in the same day. They’re not something that can be shipped. They are most flavorful in the afternoon of a sunny day and are definitely larger if it has been raining.

I’m pretty sure the squirrels leave my mangoes alone since they have free rein to chow down on my muntingia. There’s still enough for me to snack every day during the long season.

Thank you again. Really looking forward to giving them a taste.

Thank you so much for the offer. Please do let me know when you have some fruits available. I would love to buy some to sample!

Will do!

I feel like some of ours have lasted a few days but my husband does usually eat them all very fast haha. I will experiment with how long they will stay good for and see if shipping might work :)

I was thinking of getting a yellow too just to complete the collection, but from the sound of things, it might not be worthwhile. Most people seem to prefer the red. Maybe I'll just graft on a yellow.

Just bought a strawberry tree based on reviews that the little berries are delicious with a sweet and cotton candy flavor. The only downside is the size. Anyone knows of efforts made out there in trying to get bigger/better fruit? Are there any named cultivars?
I have a red and a yellow. Ours have different tastes but its subtle. I prefer our red ones and the second year fruiting tasted much better than the first. Good to know that you can prune the heck out of them to manage size.

There are no cultivars as far as I’m aware. There isnt much variation in fruit size. They will get big quick if you let them but ours don’t seem to be care being pruned short.

Oddly enough the first year the yellow one tasted like buttery popcorn 🤔 Much sweeter now though. I can try to send you some of both colors if you want once they start producing. They are just starting to flower now. Just lmk :)

I’m not sure if they graft well but it would probably suffice to just have a branch or two of yellow. I enjoy having both though :)

Awe man, nasty! Forget about it.

"Rancid"? In a good way like durian??

Nah rancid in a bad way.... like noni. For me comparable to vomit or stinky cheese. Hard to describe if u have never tasted it

Sounds like quite a few of people here are already growing this plant. Really glad I have picked one up. What's the largest sized fruit you have gotten? Anything over an inch? It might be worthwhile to collect some good genetics and start a breeding program since this thing grows so quickly - seed to production within the year is possible I heard.

great fruit and quick growing-

They fruit prolifically so while an individual fruit may be small its easy to get a whole hand full and chow down
