I have a bag of patio plus and a bag of perlite on hand so I’ll probably use them.
Last round I used a big pot so it was a pain to move it around and bottom heating it.
This round I’ll try 4” to 5” pot so I could wrap heating pad around it.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Too early to graft citrus???
« on: February 09, 2025, 02:26:50 AM »
@poncirsguy

Last time I did T-budding in August, on big trees, the buds won’t push until spring.
I don’t do T-budding with citrus anymore.

I do bark graft and side graft, with a nurse leaf.
I use a ziplock bag to supply nurse leaf with water.
Bag is off for pictures.

This graft was done on 12/26/24.
I trimmed rootstock above graft after graft taken.
I trimmed the top on 2/7/25.

I graft citrus year round.

You should graft now.

@skhan

Cherilata is a beast here in SoCal.
In the past it dropped 2-3 old leaves over winter.
This year it hasn’t dropped any old leaves.
It is still sending out new leaves, even though February is our coldest month.
It could have full set of leaves when fruits mature this summer.

@Longranger

I trimmed tree in April but only get cherilata fruits in July.
It’s very slow to flower after trimming.

Fruits dropped from May to August of next year.

Last year I trimmed August 1st.
Fruits are marble size now.

The fruit with a leaf attached looks cool.

I now feel a need for an early variety.

Cement is high in pH.
You need acid to lower pH.
It’s difficult since you won’t know how much is needed to neutralize .

Maybe flood the tree?

The tips are growing in winter but the fruits are slow growing.
The fruits take a long time to mature.
I cover the fruits with mess bags and eat when they drop in the bag.

For guava, a good cultivar tastes just as good in pot as in ground.
For a mediocre cultivar, the in pot fruit is trash.

I don’t have any experience with citrus in pot vs in ground.

I ate a fruit before.
It was crispy through out, with little bit of sweetness.
Taste wise, it was mediocre like Gold Nugget from a supermarket.

I’m interested in grafting it to a branch on my tree but scions have been elusive.

13
I ate 3 of the largest on my tree.
2 were good, 1 were sour.
I need to wait longer.

14
I’m only topping off mulch and fertilizing citrus.
I can’t find my bag of seeds.

15
I’m in for 2.

I wrapped the whole scion and used a whip graft.
I used rubberband to bind them.

18
Is $60 each a final price, including shipping and paperwork?

You could remove bark and cambium 1” wide by 1/4” tall 1/4” above a bud to force bud to grow.
Branch would be slow and weak because it’s in the shade of the canopy .

The other option is to tie water bottles near the tips of the tall branches to pull them down.

21
The bacteria attack the roots first.
The disease weaken the roots so the roots can’t support the top.
We should try to find a combo where the top helps the roots.
This requires a rootstock and a nurse branch that are tolerance to the disease.
This is where a nurse branch would be practical for home gardener, but not to the citrus industry.

I’m playing with 2nd best finger lime.
The best tolerance is Australian Desert Lime.
You guys should try it if you can acquire it.

UC Riverside have ADL but I don’t know how to buy scions from them.
Madison sell grafted tree but won’t ship to California.

I grafted both seedlings to my Sumo.
I grafted low so they were slow.
They have long thorns.
No fruits so far.

23
Hak Ip first time flowering.
No flowers on 2 Sweet Heart trees in pots.

24
You all can graft fingerlime or Australian Desert Lime to your citrus tree so the graft nurses the tree. Just keep a short branch growing .

I’ve grafted fingerlime to my trees.
I’m waiting on them to push.
ADL is better but I can’t get ADL shipped here.

I’ve used same technique on red skin atemoya.
I covered the fruits with black plastic bags at early stage to reduce green chlorophyll and remove near maturity to increase red intensity.
