Internet will say it's more cold hardy than Hass,  but don't believe it , going into winter number 2 ,trees are more busy now with better leaves so prob take cold well enough but I will report soon how well they do, Fresno can have it's first freeze toward end of nov

Tropical Fruit Discussion / SC Gold Avocado Tree , the good, bad and ugly
« on: September 21, 2025, 11:36:04 PM »
I recently grafted some SC Gold Avocado, I have no large tree yet , I see positive things on internet about it and wanted to try it, for thoses that have been growing it for a few years now what do you like or dislike about SC Gold both the tree or the fruit ? Size of tree ?? Growth habit ? Alternate bearing ? Fruit shelf life? Fast grower?

Not sure how great the Luna is , they make you jump through hoops to get a tree for the small timer like me, there is a short video on YouTube on Luna , I still have not figured out how it differs much from Gem , at least Gem is easy to buy these days.

I have some Maluma fruit on a very young tree , holding well even in a bad wind last week the fruit hidden deep inside tree like a Gem fruit bumpy dark green guessing ready to pick in spring sometime ,they say the seed smaller than Hass, so I will see for myself.  Turns black like a Hass. For sure Maluma not as fast a grower as a Hass but also on diff clonal rootstock so I'm not comparing apples to apples.

Brad if I understand correctly the Maluma was discovered  growing in a Hass Grove in south Africa , appears the farmer thought it had good potential that's how the ball got rolling, still very slow to get popular in Cali, other countries it's more popular in., But back to your ? Unlikely from a Gwen so if found in a Hass orchard my thought would be a chance seedling closely related to a Hass mother tree.

One of my Maluma trees is on Dusa rootstock so far it wants to grow out wide kinda like a flat wide bush , I'm hoping it pushes new growth upward soon , the Maluma on Toro Canyon has some braches shooting straight up, both have been in ground only a little over a year I hope at year 2 they grow more upright. Maluma kinda slow growing perhaps about like the speed of a Gem.

I'm doing another Brokaw order  around oct 1st ,2025 if anyone wants to piggyback on my order , trees will be 65ea. paid for in advance and must be picked up east of Fresno, CA by Nov 1 2025 , pm me if anyone interested ,this time of year selection is low ,mostly gem and zutano but the value of the tree is it's rootstock and you can graft anything on top to make it a 2 way tree.

If someone wants Maluma trees made up by Brokaw on Leola rootstock they will make up a special order contract, but the minuim amount is 100 trees for the custom order ,I'm not sure if you need to pay 100 percent to start contract  or 25 percent down , likey take 2 to 3 years to complete the order.

Not sure when trademark expires off of Maluma  if anyone knows let us know, still watching tree growing habit early impression is tree want to grow more floppy than I prefer

15
And when internet says Maluma takes cold decent I have yet to see it but it's nice in the fact it sets fruit inside the canopy for protection

16
My biggest concern over cold on Maluma is it might be more of a side floppy grower than I prefer, taste is little diff than Hass and seed ratio is better than Hass having a smaller seed growing in Fresno county tends to make smaller fruit size so more flesh I can get the better.

17
My first winter in ground with young Maluma and Hass they took cold close to the same I think I had a mild winter don't recall it getting below 30 for short window of cold both had very slight burn most on newest leaves.pic is Maluma on Dusa

Since I have no big Maluma  I don't know growth pattern of big  trees ,my biggest concern is it ends up being a floppy side grower I'm not set up to do trelius growing,

I hear good things about Bird Ave , Greg does a taste test on you tube not hughe but taste is high quality

I have Maluma they have been in ground for 11 months, growing fairly well, 1 set 5 fruit on first spring after planting it in fall, the tree that set fruit is on Toro Canyon,so far seems to take cold similar to a Hass , slower growing than Hass on Leola clonal, fruit shape is longer than Hass, Maluma has longer neck, prob a winner for cali, web decribes taste as smoother more tangy and nuttier taste than Hass described like Almonds, hopefully Brokaw makes them faster to fill the demand, I think it could be better than a Hass or Gem but time will tell , has smaller seed than Hass.

Here's a picture of one of my fastest growers , it's Hass on Leola clonal rootstock, seems to be doing well and July  cooler than average temps seems to be helping

My Brokaw Maluma tree on Toro Canyon been in ground 10 months is trying to set the most fruit, but it's not the fastest grower, though I I don't know if fastest ends up being the best for fruit production or best overall health of tree, the leaves that are largest and deepest healthy green color so far are Hass trees on Leola rootstock that combo it seems to be a perfect fit at least  for the import soil I had trucked in.Uzi and Zentmyer were really slow at first then about June when soil temp was plenty warm both thoses took off
