I'm going to collect any scionwood/budwood of new seedling trees/finds that you may feel tastes very good to excellent, better than any other named varieties you tasted. I will also include any seedling trees that has been growing for more than a few years but not many people know it exist such as the Jaden loquat tree. I also found out recently that the 1Z-2Z has been around and it could be from Jim N.  I will look into this one further and give credit to the proper person.

Also, if you loquat tree shows a different type of fruit shape than normal, it may be of interest to collect. I would like to include any loquats that grow giant fruits, fruits with the eye open more than others, unusual shaped fruits, fruits that bloom more than one time in a year, have multiple crops per year, very cold hardy.

I was hoping to have Adam do this for me (all my seedlings) but that didn't work out. So, for anyone who has found a new seedling tree or has grown a new seedling tree with excellent or unusual fruits, let me know.

What I will do is the following:
1) Collect 2-4 scionwood from your seedling tree.
2) Graft it on my multi-grafted tree (has 84 varieties now).
3  Next year or when it has the first fruits after i graft it, I will document the photo of your fruits.
Take Brix measurements to log into MY comparison table.
4) Since its a seedling, you can also name the new variety and I will introduce your variety here
by ID, photos, brix, and taste comparison to Big Jim.
5) This is open to USA residents only.

This is your opportunity to have your seedling tree (variety) recognized by the loquat collectors in our forum. Once the grafted branches grow, I will try to share some cuttings with the other forum members here. If the fruits end up not tasting good then I will not distribute any scionwood, but instead just cut off the grafted branches after 2 years (fruit twice).

Why would you want to send me free scionwood of your seedling tree?
1. This is a way for you to get your new variety named and spread to other loquat collectors.
2. It will allow you to compare the brix of your seedling variety with all the others I'm growing.
3. Once your seedling variety has fruited and turns out to be a winner, then you can sell your
cuttings for a lot of money like the Peluche loquat (maybe?).
4. When you submit your scionwood/cuttings, let me know if you want to be the exclusive seller
of your seedling. If you do, then I will not share/sell any cuttings from your seedling variety.

================================================================
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND MONEY SHIPPING THE SCIONWOOD, THEN i WILL COVER YOUR
   SHIPPING COST

My Loquat tree has about 10-12 different varieties grafted onto it.

Thus far my early favorite is Chinese seedling #1. This is a premium variety sold in Shanghai china. My wife brought back some seeds and I planted them in containers. I then Grafted them onto my in-ground loquat tree several years ago. The Chinese seedling #1 was a white flesh variety with a wonderful sweetness and nice complexity in the flavor with some acidity to balance out the flavor. This is the first year the graft has fruited and they are excellent indeed and the first fruit to ripen. The best I have tasted so far. Looking forward to tasting Chinese seedlings #2 to #4 which are later ripening.

Johnny,
Your Chinese loquat seedling #1 sounds great, especially from first year fruits.  Look forward to hearing how the other Chinese seedlings taste, please share your results.

I have 6 new seedling trees that are fruiting now for the first time, so I'll be posting fruit photo and brix on those as well.

18. Rita-submitted by Reedo
19. Melissa-submitted by Melissa L.
20. Estee - submitted by Steve B.

Brief Highlights:
Seedlings 11-13 are premium Chinese loquat varieties that were grown from seed. Parent tree has white flesh.

Seedlings 16, 17 & 20 have very large fruits, equal to Peluche. This season the Khaled loquat was the heaviest, weight = 120 grams, Peluche = 118 grams, BS_Estee = 116 grams.

Seedling 16 is a giant loquat with orange flesh. Fruit weight equivalent to Peluche & Imperial -Wow!

Seedling 17- I posted photos previously of this large fruit, excellent taste.

Seedling 18, Rita, see description below.

Seedling 19, Melissa has small fruits but the taste is top 10. If I were to compare the taste, it is better than Sunset, Yehuda, or Argelino. The flesh is white, firm, and very good to excellent taste.

Seedling 20, one of the best tasting loquats I had this year, taste is excellent.

NOTE : TO MAKE IT EASIER TO SEE THE LATEST LIST, I WILL UPDATE THIS SECTION WITH ANY NEW VARIETIES SUBMITTED

Kaz,
I think you have something special with the white flesh seedling fruit you brought by today. Everyone has said it’s the best loquat they’ve had. Absolute perfect balance of sweet/tart, with much more sweetness than tart, and it seems like every fruit taste similar, so you’ve got nice consistency with this one. Much better/sweeter than Vista White, or any of the other whites I’ve tried. Wonderful fruit!
Btw the “Nancy” is from me, and thanks for putting together such a great list.

Nate, I so glad you also like the white flesh fruit. I'm biased so I couldn't make a good judgement on it but it seems to be very good tasting. I'll be taking the brix reading of this new seedling and your excellent looking Nancy submission tonight.

My white flesh loquat I gave you today will be called KT23-Lenox. Since this seedling tree is large, when I'm done with the taste of all the ripe fruits from my tree this season, I will create an Advance Wait List for some of my seedling tree cuttings I will sell/distribute.

This is a seedling from a friend we're calling "Rita" for now. I've tried to write this fruit off due to its small size, and subpar flesh/seed ratio, but it still remains one of the most intensely flavored loquats I can find locally. Strong peach/apricot/apple/pear/mango/mandarin flavor that varies depending on ripeness, with a great sugar/acid balance. Not puckering, not cloyingly sweet. The tree is 30 years old, about 12-15 tall, growing in full sun in Central California. I doubt this one will ever achieve popularity due to the flesh ratio, but due to their intensity, we find them addicting. We just take a big bowl of them outside and eat them the way you would eat sunflower seeds with shells.

a couple of years back I started on a quest to find the best loquat in our area.  I received very little response from one of our local gardening groups.  Loquats are everywhere around here, they are planted on the main street all along the rd.  and just about in every neighborhood.  We did collect scions from a big tree in one of our neighbors back yard.  It produces large fruit, but Im pretty sure it was a nursery tree when it was first planted.  Im not 100% sure.  We have a couple of small grafted trees but we are waiting for them to fruit.  Im going to ask again in some more groups and see if we can't help with this quest.  Thank you for all your hard work.

I love the loquat fruits so it is a fun hobby to see if there is another seedling or variety that tastes better than what I am growing. I started my quest about 7yrs ago when I only had the Gold Nugget, Vista White and Big Jim. Now I have over 90 varieties which includes 25 seedling trees that fruit (my seedlings) and it looks like I will be done with my search this year.

For these seedling tree introductions, I thought it would be nice for the people who have the tree to be able to show case their tree with excellent fruits.

The top 3 loquats (will not list now) from my collection is not a named variety from the nursery or have been around for more than 10yrs. The top 3 varieties are all seedling trees that was grown in someone's yard and not many people know about it. But anyone who loves to eat loquat will be happy to be growing at least a few of the top 5 varieties since majority of the orange flesh loquats taste very similar and it's hard to find any particular flavor difference, maybe only the high brix.  The white flesh loquats seem to have more flavor difference and just the brix will not give you the whole story on the taste. White flesh loquats will be sweet but tart at the same time, if you pick them early it will be more tart (some people prefer this) and if you let it fully ripen it becomes deliciously sweet, more than the orange flesh. So far, the brix on white flesh seems to be the highest (up to brix=30, from last year's testing).

For me, I don't think there will be another loquat better than what I already grow, but everyone will have their personal preference so I will not be ranking the varieties, I will leave it up to the individual person to decide.

My seedling tree PL-2 is fairly young around 3 years or so and the fruit gets bigger each year. Due fixing of fence i disconnected irrigation to the tree and it still doing well. Can not wait to see what fruits will be like in years to come.

I will be adding 3 more seedling varieties on this list soon, when I receive the cuttings to graft on my tree.

If anyone else feels they have a seedling tree which gives very good to excellent tasting loquats then send me a message so that we can add your variety to this list.

Thanks,
Kaz

26. KT2-OCBC Gail
27. KT6-Karen_Kino, highest brix=30.
28. KT26-Lisa, second highest brix=29.

Brief info on the new addition Mimi's loquat.  This is a fruit seed that was brought back from Spain in 2002 or 2003 by his mom when she went there for a vacation. His mom planted her seeds about 4-7 years ago in a pot. The plant grew to over 6 feet tall. It still has not fruited yet so I'm volunteering to help speed up the fruiting process time by grafting the scions to my in ground large loquat trees (3 different ones). We hope to see fruits in the next few years.

He lives in Philadelphia, so they bring in the loquat every time it gets to cold outside.

PL1 & 2 are from Pau, he describes the fruits on the earlier post here on page 1.

Jaden is a seedling variety with large orange flesh fruits. Grown by the Edgar Valdivia.

Sorry, the KT2-OCBC_Gail is the latest name change. It was Keiko (her daughter) but I changed it to the mom's name. I already have other Keiko loquat trees that I named my seedling tree.

So, KT2-OCBC_Gail is what it will be from this point forward. It is the parent tree of my KT1-Kosmic.

Did anyone else find a good new seedling tree that they are growing since last year?

If you did, please post it here so we can hear about your new variety.

My cousins have a bunch of loquat trees on their property. They have a cluster of about 5 tree growing together with monsteras underneath and a few others growing around the property. I was at their house a few days ago, and the loquats are starting to flower, so unfortunately no photos.

Throughout all these trees, there is a lot of variation - some are mouth-pluckeringly sour and some are sweet and tangy.
I have 2 favourites.
One is a white-yellow skinned, white fleshed one that has a pineapple like flavour. It is larger than the other loquats (which are all small-ish, normal seedling size), and is very pleasant tasting. It is one of the last to fruit in the season.
The other one I like is a typical orange loquat. Last year I tried a commercial loquat, and I just thought it was too sweet and not sour at all. This loquat is nice and sweet, with good flavour but also some sourness to complement the sweetness. Better than any commercial fruits.

I will speak more when they are fruiting...
