Maracuja Doce Aka Passiflora Alata
« on: November 19, 2024, 07:13:00 AM »
Hi,
I've got a huge Passiflora alata producing more than 500 flowers each year.
Unfortunately I get less than ten fruits from it.
I am afraid it could be not self fertile.
Any advice ?
Phil

No, if you plant the same clone then you will not get any more fruit than you have now. I suggest planting closely related species or hybrids such as P. quadrangularis, P.phoenicea, P. x decaisnea, p. “Purple Tiger”, or P.caerulea which is a good universal passiflora pollinator. If you want another alata, you must find a different clone of it (not a propagation of the same origin as yours).

I understand,
I will try to get another clone of this passiflora.
I cannot plant passiflora coerulea as it is invasive here. Two years later I will have hundreds in the garden.
Thanks,
Phil

I agree, cuttings from the same plant will be identical.
But what about plants from seeds of one and the same fruit???

Plant the seeds out, they should cross each other

Which one has the best tasting fruit?

Only a question of personal taste.
For me those are the best :
1)Passiflora ligularis aka "granadilla"
2) Passiflora alata aka "maracuja doce"
