Thai Lesser and greater galangal ginger rhizomes
« on: January 21, 2025, 08:11:49 AM »
Plenty of rhizomes available for both these types of galangal ginger available. $5 for a good sized piece with a minimum of 2 pieces plus applicable shipping costs. As the names kinda suggest the lesser form is less tall(3ft or so with skinny leaves) and has skinnier long rhizomes and the greater form gets about 6ft tall with wide leaves and has nice thick rhizomes. Both are very ginger type spicy more so than regular culinary ginger and have great medicinal value. Hit me up!

I ordered some of the rhizomes, this is an important ingredient for Thai cooking and soups, and not very easy to find. It's also a beautiful plant.

Does anyone have thoughts on location, wetter vs dryer ground? Is this happier in boggy conditions or will that cause rot of the rhizomes?

I've always had mine in dryer ground. Never tried a wet area though so it may be possible. Shampoo and butterfly ginger seem to take wet just fine so it's worth a try. They will grow from fairly deep shade to full sun.

I got both the lesser and greater varieties from Derek and they are really nice. I buy a lot of rhizomes and these came out of the box very fresh and very viable. Big cuttings with lots of roots. Some of them were already sprouting and each cutting had plenty of eyes. They are already in the ground and I am confident I'll get close to 100% strike rate on them. I am curious how they will grow and perform in the various spots I tucked them in. I am hoping they carry through the winter better than some of my ornamental ginger plants.

Thank you for your purchase and feedback! I'm sure they will grow no problem for you. Pretty easy plants to get going.
