Does anybody else share my opinon?
« on: January 24, 2025, 05:44:40 AM »
I recently got to go to a great place called Tropical Fruit world. It's the biggest and best (in my opinion) tropical fruit farm in Australia. They grow >600 different fruits.
Last time I went I bought my first ever Mamey Sapotes - a Pontin and a Maganta.
The Pontin ripened first, and I quite liked it rich, wierd taste of syrup-y pumpkin pie, but I could only eat so much.
By the time I had finished my 1kg Pontin (3 or 4 days), my Maganta had ripened and was about going bad. I ended up procrastinating and never ate the giant fruit on my kitchen bench - I just went off.

Here is my point: I just reckon Mamey Sapotes would be better at a modest size, like the size of a large mango ~ 450g.
My reasons for my opinion are:
1: Smaller fruits are easier to eat in a single helping, making for a filling snack.
2: If you have to get through an entire giant Mamey Sapote without it going off, especially for a first-timer, it's not a great experience. Too much Mamey Sapote! Mamey overload!
3: Australian Mamey Sapotes are on the verge of going commercial, and I think that for the everday shopper there would be greater uptake of a smaller, mango sized fruit, than of a Giant that costs a fair bit, that you might not even like.

Anyway, that's just my opinon, what do you think?

Absolutely agree. My favourite mamey sapotes are the spherical-shaped one. There's a small mamey sapote that's sold at the market here occasionally that is small with dark red flesh.

You can make milk shakes with the big fruit and serve 4 or 5 people.  Yes a big fruit is hard to eat by yourself.

They need to be able to offer a variety of sizes, like watermelon. You can get a really big one, or a tiny one. For what it's worth, I scoop out my mamey, vacuum seal it and then freeze it.

I'm happy whenever I have the opportunity to buy Mamey Sapote, it's not an easy fruit to find when you are craving it!

Commercial growers like the larger fruit, and Magana is the largest. When you cut one open, cut it into sections and put it in the refrigerator. That will slow down the ripening and it tastes best chilled, so just eat it piece by piece. If it truly is too much, the fruit freezes very well and can be used to make ice creams, milkshakes, pies and cakes.

For me, there is no such problem as too much Mamey.

I love mamey! Since sapodilla freeze dries so well, convinced the same will be true of mamey.

They are not on the verge of being commercial in Australia and those two older varieties have been here a long time. Even commercial fruit farmers with big trees have trouble shifting them with rotting fruit beneath trees. Yes they are ok in smoothies but all efforts to make them more popular in recent decades have failed. A fruit that taste like sweet potato with a dash of honey doesn't seem to work for many people.

i disagree. tropical fruit farm is definitely not the best tropical fruit farm in australia. its not even close to the tropics. Fruit forest farm has to be the best but i havent visited some of the other good ones like cape trib farm, zappalas or the botanical arc

but i do agree that magana are much too big.

Tropical Fruit world is about to start planting them and other Sapotaceae commercially. Here is a video:

The reason I created this topic is because I got thinking about how big Mameys get, and bigger fruits that are more expensive may have less of an uptake from the public. That's the case with Jakfruit, from what I've seen. If you aren't familiar with them, than $20 for a giant fruit you might not even like isn't that good a deal. A $5 fruit, on the other hand, is a good idea.
