What are the prettiest fruit plants you own?
« on: January 29, 2025, 02:11:33 AM »
When it comes to tropical fruit trees, ornamental value is just as important to me as the quality of their fruit. I'm really curious, which of your plants do you think are especially beautiful, and why? What do you keep coming back to just to look at, if anything?
(If you feel like it, I'd love to see pictures, too!)

Loquat trees can pass as pure ornamentals in the front yard of an HOA neighborhood. Mamey Sapote is also beautiful and looks very similar to the flowering ornamental Plumeria. Some Mamey will drop their leaves though, so watch out for that. Dwarf Samoan Coconut palms have a thick trunk and super long fronds that I find attractive.

Aside from that, a properly pruned dwarf mango tree (like an Ice Cream or CeciLove) dripping with fruit looks delightful too.

Passifloras, especially during bloom are on another level. Pendant tacsonias hanging on a trellis are absolutely stunning.

Feijoa flowers are something else, right down to the taste of the petals.

Again, Loquats are pretty beautiful and are very popular in my area. There are so many some ever grow wild!
A Mango tree with good shape looks beautiful. Depending on the variety, the glossy flushes of growth look great, and something about looking at forming fruit just makes you feel great.
Skirt pruned Jaboticaba sure are a feature tree! The edible black orbs surprise everyone. Very tasty too!
Lychees and Longans look good.
Healthy garcinias, especially lemon drop mangosteen are good as well. Beautiful sweet and tangy fruits.

Those are my picks!

Probably anything from the Eugenia genus or coffea plants.
Evergreen, and generally form a dense smaller tree/shrub.

Loquats and sapodillas are pretty, but can get scraggly as they get big

Some mangoes are also pretty ornamental. Pickering, ice cream, pettigrew,  creme brulee and giselle are standouts for me

I have mentioned it before and it still holds true. To me, the imbe is gorgeous! That thick turquoise-ish leaf is something else.

Any tree that flushes new growth in those deep reds and purple. Garcinias, cinnamon, cashew, syzygiums

Not a fruit tree but it’s hard to top Browneopsis ucayalina

My Eugenia blastantha and starfruit are both beautiful, the loquats and eugenia aff florida are also quite pretty.
I'm on the hunt for jaboticaba, Eugenia, Pouteria, Passiflora, and annona fruits (like the fruit part), if you have any to spare, lemme know!  I'm also looking for any plants that could bear fruit soon :)

This is a wax jambu I call “highlighter” I ate a tray of them I purchased from food town in WPB and planted the seeds, every sprout came up fully albino. Since they lacked chlorophyll they all died, but this one, which adapted some chlorophyll but not fully. The result is this neon green color vs typical dark green. It’s winter time now so the leaves are looking like crap, but the rest of the year this is my favorite plant to look at….second is variegated escarlate jaboticaba.

Prettiest has to be peach or nectarine trees. However lately, I like to look at my guava tree, I like the leaves and the flower buds.
Im not too crazy about the taste of one guava recently, but the lady that gave me a piece said the fruit is not ripened properly.

I gotta go with Carambola (Starfruit)

Don't they look beautiful covering slow and low roasting pork shoulders. Steamed in Starfruit  - I thought about it this morning. We can't dehydrate them fast enough.

Using star fruit ontop of pork shoulder looks fire! I’ve been dehydrating star fruit cut like this and they shrink up a lot and it concentrates the flavor, honestly like it better this way than fresh where it’s more tart and blander. I throw a handful of these dehydrated star fruits in my bowl of Cheerios and it gives a Raisin Bran feel with the dried fruit, but better lol.

Everybody who said loquat: Yes. You are so right. I don't know why they aren't planted everywhere where I live, they grow so well here and look breathtaking.
People who said passionfruit: they are some of the most spectacular flowers in the world, thanks for introducing me to types I've never heard of and also the wonderful photo~

Feijoa flowers are something else, right down to the taste of the petals.

You can eat the flowers? That sounds whimsical, a lot of these grow here but I never took a flower. New thing to try!

I really like my Caimito tree/shrub for the beautiful irridescent backs to the leaves. shimmery gold/copper.

Ooh, I see why. That's actually regal. Reminds me of a southern magnolia.

I dont know if this counts because i dont own it yet i just have seeds but i think Cymbopetalum Brasiliense the fruits a an awesome shade of pink and a cool shape and the plant looks good too

That definitely counts, pink fruit is best fruit imo. Thanks for showing it!

I have mentioned it before and it still holds true. To me, the imbe is gorgeous! That thick turquoise-ish leaf is something else.

Wowww, thanks for the pictures. I would get this and not even care about getting fruit, I just want those leaves! It reminds me of Ficus Audrey and Eugenia flamingensis, two others with light veins and thick turquoisey green leaves like that.

Not a fruit tree but it’s hard to top Browneopsis ucayalina

I am soooo jealous, Browneopsis ucayalina has been at the top of my wishlist for a while. How does it look like that? Evolution is amazing.

This is a wax jambu I call “highlighter”

That is amazing, that you got one like that is so cool! I wonder if its children would look like that too, or if the only way to propagate it'd be grafting/cuttings.

Don't they look beautiful covering slow and low roasting pork shoulders. Steamed in Starfruit  - I thought about it this morning.

I wasn't expecting a reply like this but yes, that looks wonderful!

It's my first try at using Starfruit. I've turned over the meat, resting on top of the Starfruit. The meat looks very moist, added the fruit 1 hour into the roast time. You can smell a hint of the fruit.
We have 12 trays working in our dehydrator. We send it to our son in Oregon. He says it tastes like home.

You could also throw those Starfruit in the vitamix and blend them up, then reduce them down into a glaze. As the pork gets done, start glazing it with the concentrated Starfruit puree.

Lots of Fruit Trees can look really nice if you take care of them and prune properly.

I would not put something in my front yard that loses all its leafs during winter here in FL...
