Avocado Rootstock -Purchase
« on: February 02, 2025, 05:46:47 AM »
Has anyone here purchased good avocado rootstock from a wholesale nursery?

If you did, please let me know which one you ended up buying. I'm thinking a making a large rootstock purchase (50-100) since they have minimum orders to buy them. I have a contact/friend who owns a nursery so I can get it purchased from him.

Check out the list of commercial rootstocks that Brokaw nursery has in stock now.

Here's their website with details on the rootstock if you want to read up on it.

Also, if it's a good deal, I might buy some extras for those of you that have supported my sales, just pay for the rootstock and cost to ship to you once I get them. I'll probably end up picking 2 rootstock varieties for my order.

I will need to see how much it might cost me for the rootstock first.

Hi there,

Any word on this? I wasn’t aware Brokaw would sell you ungrafted rootstock trees.

The person who had the nursery license said he closed his shop so doesn't have it any longer, no special price.

I will just call them up sometime this week to see how much their minimum buy is.

I don't think I will do a group buy, too much hassle. But I will confirm once I get a response from them this week.

If the price is reasonable then I may just drive to their farm/nursery in Ventura and pick it up. Right now, I'm asking if they have the following in stock.

1. Dusa
2. Duke7

I will get either one or half and half order of the total quantity needed to meet the minimum order. I'm hoping the rootstock is about $8-$10 each, will find out.

Brokaw told me a couple years ago that they will never sell ungrafted rootstocks, you have to instead order grafted trees on those rootstocks. I wanted to buy Toro Canyon, though, not the ones you list there. When they said they had to be grafted and ordered 2 years in advance, I asked for a quote for local pickup for 20 trees, Mexicola Grande grafted on Toro Canyon. Here's the email they sent me:

Quote
For Mexicola Grande on Toro Canyon that would be a “special order” for California only at 100 trees (3.5 gallon sleeves only- see below for our field trees) minimum. $42.80 each paid in full prior to propagating.

We do not sell ungrafted rootstock or scions as we use all of our rootstock for our production.

Minimum order of $4,280.00 just to get a clonal rootstock that I only really wanted a few trees, so I haven't tried to order from them again.

Ripoff, I will see what I can do. If they say the same thing then I'll need to find some other source. I do have a contact with a citrus grower so he may be able to pull some strings for me with the avocado rootstock source.

As far as I know, Brokaw is essentially the only place making clonal avocado rootstocks in CA, but if you learn of anyone else doing it definitely share with everyone here!

My boss bought just two trees from them directly, which they don't seem to do usually. I have been meaning to visit for awhile, actually I applied for a job there some time ago but didn't get an interview.

I'll see what it's like in person once this rain rain goes away.

Sounds good. Hope there is someone there you can get on good terms and sell you the rootstocks. I'm also going to check with our CRFG members to see if anyone has a contact. The past director of the avo research in Irvine should know maybe, I'll ask.

Subtropica nursery in Fallbrook sells trees on clonal rootstock. I spoke with them last year and most of their stock was Hass on Tami.

We are interested in the rootstock plant, not a grafted avocado tree on the rootstocks they mention in your link.

Brokaw seemed to say on their website that they sell the rootstock plant, that is what I'm looking for.

Subtropicas site doesn’t say one way or the other if they sell rootstock trees. I provided the link so you could reach out to them if your are unable to find rootstock trees elsewhere.

ok, I may do that after I get a response back from Brokaw. I know of one other online shop that sells only the rootstock, but they are all out of everything so hope they get more stock soon.

I could always get a few hundred avocado fruits again from a very old avocado tree I have access to, but it takes a year before you can use the seedling for grafting.
