White Sapote flower & fruit season in Central FL
« on: February 14, 2025, 05:32:16 PM »
Hoping to learn more about when different white sapote varieties flower and fruit here in Central FL.

In general, I've heard we're about 1-2 months behind South FL. Growables (https://growables.org/information/TropicalFruit/SapoteWhite.htm) says the fruit ripens 6-9 months after flowering.

For me this year:
- Campbell just finished flowering (early Feb)

- Younghans is also flowering (early Feb)

Denzler isn't doing anything yet which makes sense since it's supposed to fruit later in the fall. Anyone else feel free to add your notes so we can all learn!

Interesting. My Denzler flowered a while back and has already set fruit here in the very southern tip of 10A.

We had a prolonged bloom starting over a month or more ago. Most of the varieties grafted to the mother tree bloomed at the same general time (except Smathers--that graft has been pushing vigorous vegetive growth). Interestingly enough, the parent Smathers bloomed at the same time as the big tree with all the grafts (but its not close enough to pollinate).

If I remember right, both trees bloomed about a month later last year.

Galatians, it's interesting that yours are blooming so much earlier. Hope you get a nice fruit set this year!

Who knew, wasn't Denzler supposed to be fall fruiting?! Maybe it gets a second crop or something.

I should probably leave out Denzler this year since it hasn't yet been here a year to fully acclimate. The others have been here over a year.

That was one reason why I got the Denzler from Catherine at Jack & The Beanstalk Nursery. She talks about the fall season fruiting in this video:

1. Flowers on Clytia
2. Flowers on Younghan's Gold
3. Yellow sapote (c. tetrameria) has a lot of flowers.
4. Smathers is holding small fruits and some flowers

My Aqua Viva White Sapote just started flowering too, about a month ago. Haven't tried the fruit yet.

Thanks Coconut Cream. Also found this: 'Denzler' is a variety with a longer than average shelf life. It is considered an everbearing type with small-to medium-sized fruits that have smooth creamy flesh (https://www.plantithawaii.com/exotics).

Of course Hawaii is different than FL, but maybe it'll be semi-everbearing in FL if you already have fruitlets and it continues fruiting into the fall.
