Cherimoya or Atemoya - Plant id pls
« on: October 30, 2021, 01:57:40 AM »
I started this tree around 3 yrs back from seed. I actually planted the sugar apple seeds that i got from a friend. Not sure how it ended up as cherimoya or Atemoya. it will be great if someone can identify whether it is cherimoya or Atemoya. All the below pics are from tbe same tree. The tree is in a 15 gal black plastic container. Thanks in advance.

If it came from a sugar apple seed, wouldn't it by definition be an atemoya?  A cherimoya tree could not come from a sugar apple seed.

A cherimoya cannot come from a Sugar-Apple seed, but an atemoya can.  The appearance fits with atemoya.

Or the seed was not correctly identified.

the plant does look like cherimoya but the fruit doesn't look like a full cherimoya more like an atemoya. cherimoya fruit tends to be more flat, round and/or symmetrical. atemoya tends to be deformed and show some traces of the eyes/spikes kinda but you can tell it's not a full a.squamosa either.

Thanks for your response.  Is it possible for this to be a new type/ variety?

Are you sure the seeds were sugar apple? Looks a lot like my 15 gallon Booth that I got from Clausen nursery a few years ago. Mine is much larger than yours but leaves and fruit look the same. They are reputable but do sell their cherimoyas from seed. Mine certainly doesn't look like a Booth fruit but variance from seed.

it's possible that the first fruit was simply deformed by insects or something and it ends up looking like an atemoya? it's a bit hard to tell from here. the other fruit pictures look quite different than the first

Thanks for responding.  I got these seeds from my friend who also has a Cherimoya tree grafted with many varieties.  There is a chance, she gave me cherimoya seeds.

Looks like a cherimoya or at least more of those genes.
Cherimoya fruits could be smooth, indented, or bumpy.  However, the fruits usually has this brown fuzz when young. Also the leaves are also a bit brown fuzz when young. Atemoya, tend to be more greenish in young fruitlets and young leaves.  But who knows, if you cross pollinate enough fruits and the seeds could have more cherimoya genes it may look like that since atemoyas are already a cross of cherimoya.
