Citrus General Discussion / Citrus bud grafting
« on: July 24, 2021, 08:43:26 PM »
After having dismal success rates grafting citrus using cleft grafts, I switched to chip/bud grafting and am having much better success.  Iím still only at about 50% success but it is much better than before. Iíve done plenty of successful cleft grafts on apple and pear so I think my technique is not too bad. I am also surprised at how fast bud grafts grow once they take. Itís counterintuitive but my citrus bud grafts from last year have grown incredibly and have significantly surpassed my previous yearsí citrus cleft grafts in overall size.  Thought Iíd post this for anyone who has been discouraged by their citrus grafting results.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Pomello leaf drop

My cara cara orange did the same thing the last two years after pushing out large numbers of flowers. And my black sapote just did the same after pushing out lots of blooms. Your citrus appears to be flowering. If it produces a super bloom of flowers you may be seeing a similar phenomenon. I donít know what causes this but it appears to have something do with a superbloom of flowers.

Itís hard to make out clearly from the photos which appear low resolution. If you look on the under side of the leaves do you see little track marks weaving through the leaf?  Some flies lay eggs on nťw growth citrus leaves and the larvae burrow around in the leaves and cause the leaves to curl. Aphids can cause a similar leaf curl but aphids are easy to spot.  I spray need oil on new growth which prevents it to some extent but you need to do it before the problem starts for the best effectÖ.once a week or every other week. Iíd also check the tree for ants which will cultivate and farm various insidious invading organisms which is especially commonly seen in California.
