Oh.. I went back to watch a video of the KSL farm and see the red leaves now.  I guess I remembered them wrong.  Holy cow those plants got huge out there!

Ah okay, I'll leave them alone then, my shady places are pretty much just shade.

This is an unknown variety growing at parental units' yard.  Likely bird-dropped seed 7-10 years ago, unknown variety.  Gardener chopped all lower branches off to shape it into a "tree" a few years ago before it began setting fruit, requires ladder to access   Branches are pulled down for easier pictures.  Fruit is sweet, tart, quite tasty.  It might be fun to graft known varieties to this, but my only experience is so far is with two apple trees.  Maybe someday I'll try to graft something to the lower trunk, although I noticed a sucker growing, it is now 2ft tall, maybe I can graft to that?

Shilohtech, when that area had sun, water was every 2-3 days, now that it's shady maybe 7-10 days.  I check the soil, keeping moist and not drying out.  Soil mixture is 3-1-1 (bark, peat, perlite) with about a tablespoon of a mild organic fertilizer (down to earth 4-4-4) since it's in approx 1 gallon grow bag.

I think for a period it may be been too wet, maybe that caused this.

Hi:

I received a blackberry jam fruit rooted cutting earlier this year.  Took a while, but it finally had some new growth sept-oct, and today I noticed brown/orange spots on the leaves.  Is this something to be concerned about or is it fine?

At the moment, it's in an area which gets only morning sun (overcast or fogged) for 3-4 hours, then rest of the day bright shade.

That makes sense, thank you.  I wouldn't add a graft to the rootstock then, just below the existing graft?

You could potentially grow some sort of vine onto the tote, or put some shade-loving plants around it, beneath the canopy of the tree.  Just means more plants, but hey, why not 

White sugarloafs seem to do well here but Im growing in a poly hoop house during winter.  The temps get into the 35-40s during winter.  We get 300hrs of 45F or lower.  The pineapple plants dont really get damaged from cold at those temperatures if they are kept dry and out of the wind it seems.  As long as they are under the plastic hoop house and it doesnt freeze they stay looking pristine.

I'm north and right on the coast from you.  My kaui sugarloafs (both the tops I got from a fruit order last winter, and also slips purchased from you earlier this year) are growing fastest on my balcony patio, although the leaves are purple I think from the sun and the glass railing -- it's normal from what I've read.  The Puan and cheese pine finally put out new growth, but seem to be slower growing.  I don't have luxury of a hoop or greenhouse, so we'll see how they do this winter outside.  The only other experience I have are twisties from costco and whole farts started in 2019.  Most of their leaves browned, likely from the cold last winter we had but eventually all had new growth.  Based on my short experience, it seems pineapples on my balcony only show growth aug-oct, and rest of the year they are very slow, therefore I suspect mine will simply take 3-4 years to fruit instead of the ~1.5-2.   Hopefully I'm wrong and they pickup in the spring

Fortunately I don't have ants in the plants yet, however, I do have lots of spiders taking up home and though it looks ugly I think that's okay.  Meanwhile, the ants have been a battle invading my home

Unfortunately the third plant with the deisred un-netted fruit died shortly after I posted.  We left the fruit on the vine just to see if it would ripen.  It remained pretty much the same color, with a little flush, and this weekend rolled off the dead vine.  We cut it open.  It had mild cantaloupe flavor, but wasn't sweet.  Until next year!

Hopefully, others who tried growing this can chime in?  Did you all have any luck?
