Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cleft Grafting Red Jabo onto Sabara
« on: February 28, 2021, 12:30:06 AM »
I grafted the "Red" on my in the ground Sabara, and the scion really struggles. I think it really needs lower pH water and peat moss. The truncifolia grafts grow amazing and the mother tree is fine.

I've got a variegated one and way too sour, I'll stick with kumquat.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best White Sapote Variety? (California)
« on: February 28, 2021, 12:23:32 AM »
I wasn't a big fan of yellow sapote until I found a tree planted in a vacant field in Escondido in San Diego. The fruit is the yellow and a bit on the small size, but they taste like butterscotch or caramel. I've grafted up a few, I just call it Mary Ln.

It depends what they're grafted on. Mine on an Imbe in the ground is 8 feet tall after about 4 years, my seedlings are about half that tall in deep tree pots. No flowers on any though.

That looks like the Thai green thornless, it puts out yellow green fruits, and never goes dormant.

Mike,

I know where the original "Leroy" tree is and it is no problem getting scions, also I found another white sapote tree  that is the best tasting I've had. It is in Escondido in a vacant piece of land. I grafted a few but don't have anymore, I just call it "Mary Lane". Some people in San Diego may have some that I've given out.
I've got a peanut butter fruit tree. I'm interested in June or so to get some of your mango scions.

I use the thin plastic bags you use at the grocery store for meat and vegetables and fill them up with moss and then use twine to attach them to the cut after you cut the bag in half. The important part is to keep the tree watered well and also I use rooting hormone which speeds up the root growing.

The leaves look a bit big for Uniflora.

I just picked Selma, Elixir, Leos X, Cumbre seedling, Fortuna, Concha Lisa and Santa Rosa. Hopefully they don't get too ripe before Saturday.

Hi All,

Does anyone have any imbe seeds/live plants for sale?

Been looking for some time from a reliable source/vendor.

Waiting for your guys' feedback.

Thanks.
I've got over 50 fruit trying to ripen now, but we aren't getting the heat for them to turn ripe. If you do get down to San Diego I have a few seedlings.

Palmers are long and s-curved.

I've been to Brazil a few times and "Palmers" are for sure not long and S shaped.

Isn't "Palmer" the popular variety we get from Brazil? That's what it looks like.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How Good are Star Apples?
« on: November 09, 2020, 02:59:12 PM »
I think they're really good, even though they have quite a bit of latex but...the other day I went to a nursery and got to try and bought an Abiu, Pouteria caimito and it was as good or better than the star apple and the plant I brought home is maybe a year old grafted and it's already loaded with flowers. The guy told me they're very precocious and from what I saw I would have to agree. The fruits are also twice the size of the star apple fruit. Something else to look into

What variety of Abiu did you get?
Yes, I've seen star apples fruited in San Diego.

I think that it is very cold tolerant, mine grows outside fine year round in coastal southern California. I haven't picked mine at the right time, so the taste wasn't the greatest.

Definitely parfianka is the way to go. At least for my coastal area with not much heat.

I should have several varieties ready by then, plus tons of longans.

68
One of my seedlings took 4 years to fruit, and another has taken 10 years for a god crop. I have a lot ripening right now on my 12 foot tree. The one that fruited fast grew and fruited at 2 feet tall kind of like a bush.

69
Another foot or so of flush on this Luc's grafted on an Imbe. We got some good heat in Southern California for a few weeks, plus a lot of watering done to take advantage. The tree is now about 8 feet with some good branching.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First fruiting of Coronata, 7-8 year old
« on: October 10, 2020, 04:23:49 PM »
First fruiting of a Coronata I got when I visited Adam 7 years ago. I got it as a 1 gallon and it is now in a 15 gallon. Adam said it would take 12 years plus to fruit. My friend showed me the fruit today even though I see the plant everyday. What a surprise. Does anyone know specifics about this variety?

71
Ill take 20 or trade

Sorry Brian,

They are all gone and no more fruit.

I have a flowering 4 foot one in a pot.

About 5-6 years I believe.

74
Here is a Luc's breaking through on an Imbe seedling and also are these growths vegetative coming through on a Lucs?

I got one called "Kecil" from Frankies in Hawaii 9 years ago as a one gallon. It is now about 15-20 feet tall and produces a real good flavored fruit. Ong should have that variety soon, I also have the Thai long green one from Ong and it tastes real good.
