It’s good to do it yourself! Polycarbonate is nice, but at least doubles or triples the greenhouse cost all together. I was able to get large sq ft for good price by saying no to polycarbonate.
It took me and my dad like two months of on and off work to get the greenhouse up. It’s a major job!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help with rooting mulberries - stage 2
« on: March 28, 2023, 11:42:19 PM »
Why don't you start them in the pot first so you don't have to transplant them. That seems to be the factor limiting your success.

755
Well you got the Mendelian genetics with the peas of Gregor Mendel. Pretty cool concept.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is Cypress mulch ok for Citrus?

Cyprus mulch is nice. I use it in my greenhouse. If it's not treated, go ahead.

Hi all, I've been trying to find a couple of these trees for two years. I can't believe I missed out on the group buy again. :(

Does anyone know where I can get a couple without waiting another year? I have been stratifying some seeds for a few months but forgot to add water. Ugh!
Myself and others are grafting trees. If you want one now, Revivalroots has some for sale.

After seeing the mold atemoya thread and having personal questions about the best way to send scions, this thread is going up. It’s been discussed before, but it’s nice to have all the info in one place.
Please chime in with what your take on sending scions is.
I’ll go first,
No wet paper towels. I’ve thrown out lots of stuff just cause they were moldy. Literally the scions were soaked and dripping water.
I’ve noticed best way to send is wrapped in parafilm or buddy tape. It’s also an act of courtesy so the receiver doesn’t have to do it. Wrapping them and putting in a plastic bag is enough. I’ve also received scions in a plastic bag with no wrap. This also seems to work. Jaboticaba and avocado were great looking after that treatment.
Scions with high sap content I’d recommend to keep a bit moist. I’ve had jackfruit and cempedak scions dry out super fast. To keep a bit moist, I’ll wrap them or just place them in a bag with a moist paper towel. I squeeze ALL the water out to make sure they don’t mold. This is on top of the scions being wrapped.

Preparing-
When preparing scions, choose branches that have not pushed new growth if possible. Buds that are larger are nice to choose. Just don’t choose too late or else it doesn’t work either. Choose branches with the most upright growth if possible. This really comes into play with garcinia. Other trees, it’s fine.

Storing -
I’ve found that the fridge can work well by storing scions. Just don’t let them freeze. Be smart. Also keep in mind certain types of scions last longer than others. Rule is if you can graft it sooner, it’s better when it comes to tropical fruits.

Please feel free to add on your advice and comments. Do you agree or disagree with what I’m saying? I’d love to hear.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yangmei Survey Feb 2023 Group Order
« on: March 24, 2023, 10:51:08 PM »
When do you need the surveys by?  It's still too early for me as well.  When I first received my trees, I didn't think any of them looked like they would make it.  The branches looked shriveled, and there weren't any noticeable buds.

I soaked them for a few hours in rainwater with seaweed extract, humic substances, and micronutrients and planted all 12 of them in one 10 gallon fabric pot.  I only trimmed off broken branches and made necessary cuts.  I did not wrap in buddy tape or cover with any plastic.  I had issues in the past with plastic and I didn't use buddy tape because I wanted to be able to foliar spray the branches and buds that hopefully formed.

They have been outside under a potted palm tree and surrounded by ferns.  It's been cold, with regular rain since I potted them up.  I have been feeding them with the same diluted nutrients I initially soaked them several times a week.

Five of the trees have buds that are swelling, so I'm hopeful again.

Janet
I’ll leave this open for the next month or so. Will continue to bump the thread every week or so.
Nice that you’ve seen some signs of growth. All of my friends shriveled and died… the roots were super dry. But…I got some scion wood and grafted it and I see one with a bud forming. Of course it may die, but that’s nice to see anyway lol.

Also, after reading about Simons approach grafts, I’ve set one up this week. Yangmei to cerefiera.

Statistics is rad! Wish I paid more attention in high school but really loved taking a Bio statistics course and doing a thesis studying the evolutionary biology of serpentine endemic plants. Learned to really love statistics. You can really learn a lot.   Collect more variables and you could run a couple of different analysis to see if there were other factors that contributed to plant survival. Cool to see this, good work!
Bio statistics seems really cool! I'm going to look more into stats. I realized that statistics can be useful in everyday life more than I thought it would.
I'll try to see what info I can draw from the data.

Thank you to the 5 people who responded! As always, the larger the sample size, the more accurate the result. If you have a spare 3 minutes to fill it out, I encourage you to!

I've seen their fb posts and it seems like they have some cool stuff!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting Plinia?
« on: March 23, 2023, 01:48:10 PM »
After tasting the most common ones, and a few rare ones that only a few have tasted, I can say one of the best ones are
sabara and grimal. Sabara just has that nice flavor you can't find anywhere else. Grimal is good and tastes just like a good muscadine. Not the puny ones in FL, but the ones up here. I know people do recommend coronata restinga, but I haven't gotten to try that one yet.

I know there are a lot of yellow plinias out there like rara, clausa, edulis, inflata etc. And I'm sure there are people who can chime in on those tastes. Except for edulis, the only way to try them is go to South America...I like the cambuca taste, but just nothing shocking about it.

Quick feedback for "If you were successful in reviving trees from feb order, what varieties are growing?" Can you change it to multiple choice? I had none survive but currently it only lets you select one.
Thank you! I have changed that.

People don't be afraid to submit a response! Responses are anonymous - even I don't know who answered!
Once again, this is just for learning and revising techniques for yangmei bareroots.

If the tree is mature...you can also try girdling the trunk to stress it to flower...Be warned though you could damage or even kill the tree if not done properly.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yangmei Survey Feb 2023 Group Order
« on: March 22, 2023, 08:04:40 PM »
Hey! I'm taking statistics class right now and it's always cool to see how data and stuff works.
I've made a short survey about your success rates on this yangmei order. This is to help benefit the community for future group buys - we will see what techniques led to the best turnout of success. Individual data will not be shared, sold, or distributed  ;). This means that we will not know that Jaboticaba45 got 5 and lost all 5... Only the data as a whole will be presented right back to the forum to further the yangmei quest. Based off the data, we may be able to draw conclusions on how to better revive bareroot yangmei.
Here's the link to the survey -

At around what temps do mango flowers get wrecked? I’d assume anything above 40 is good correct?
Lost all stone fruit crops and persimmons this year from frost.

I think I'm gonna call it done after a Russell or two for the Garcinias.

honestly you should be 3-4 russells at minimum since they're dioecious. Unless you can get someone to sell you make female scions.
Lance,
do you know of anyone with a fruiting tree in HI? Or confirmed male or female?

Btw, you're able to get it to fruit up here in 7b?
Nope. No one has fruited it in the US yet even. I've seen decent sized ones in Fl, but still need years to go. HI probably has a few close to fruiting.
Can't really do garcinias up north. They're really slow growers. Although achacha, seashore mangosteen, lemon drop, lucs, and imbe and a few others are doable if you're willing to wait. I've got a lemon drop that's pretty close. I plan on grafting a couple later. But I traded out most of my garcinia collection for other plants just due to the slow growth and wait time.

I also had some seeds. But they are all gone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: grafting question
« on: March 20, 2023, 04:33:30 PM »

to combat the problem Brian is facing, me and my friend designed a grafting clip to secure and protect new grafts.
Unfortunately the product didn’t really gain traction…oh well.
Anyways, if grafts are in shaded or protected place there’s no need to bag. If it’s in full sun, I’ve used aluminum foil to shield new grafts.

3 packs left of giant red crystal.
We don't normally do this, but you can expect extra seeds if you order the giant red crystal. We never were going to sell it, but ended up and so the stock kinda was off. So, if you order, you can expect around 8+ seeds.

Sorry folks, didn't know there would be this big of a demand. Unfortunately I'm way too busy with stuff in my life to coordinate a large order. I've just asked one of my friends. The option is still available to anyone who wants to do it though.
