Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB: Sweet Type Uvalha
« on: June 22, 2016, 05:32:47 PM »
Hi, I know I've begged FFF/Adam to acquire this sweet type uvalha, but I know he's busy so no luck with him.  Does anyone have seeds/cuttings/plant for sale?

vertical pics, the griffithii is the one on the top and the horizontal, griffithii is on the left.

I will make one disclaimer: when Lynn told me what the fruit was, I heard rafithii.  But when I googled it and looked at this article, the closest was griffithii. I could be wrong.

1378
just the fruit.  I can't tell the difference by looking on the outside. However, once you cut and eat, can tell a difference.  the griffithii taste more mangoish. I definitely prefer the kasturi hands down.

Great article. This might solve the mystery wild mango I have on my table. Not M. 'rafitiai' but M. griffithii.  Need to confirm with Frankie.

Thanks!

I agree with you Cookie Monster, I can eat them all day long, the problems is to time my trip to El Salvador when they are in season. I love the fact that they are crunchy, but I agree that the seeds are a pain. I wished my seeds had grown, but I guess that is like the Olosapo fruit a total holy grail for me. 

you want seeds?

I'm with Jaime.  First one I had was so good I kept the seeds and can't wait for a tree to start growing.  Tasted like mango apricot pineapple.

make sure you got a female at least.  or graft female scions on.

You mean Frankie's?

Taste is subjective.  I think his season or at least the current crop is winding down already.  I myself and some other friends love it.  Other friends are meh.  While a few are like you.  I've eaten a few overripe ones by accident and I agree it wasn't exactly my favorite thing to eat.

Personally I love it and buy up when I can and even grafted some this year!  Ha ha ha.  Hope you were able to buy some other stuff from him while you were visiting.  Kasturi maybe?

"Jacquin" is the name of the botanist who gave this plant its scientific name, so not the name of the fruit.

That's good to know.  That much less to type if I have to write it again!   :)

must be doing something right. congrats.

for every success I've had, I have at least 5 failures.  Total facepalm moments.  Ha ha ha. Thanks Don.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kasturi in a pot
« on: June 16, 2016, 02:11:43 PM »
I was talking to my neighbor at his front door and noticed I was standing next to a mango in a pot.  Then I realize it had fruit. Then I realized it was kasturi.  Who would've thought.  2nd year fruiting.

well, didn't expect this to happen:

I have been to Kuching before. I wonder if the college collection is still maintained after these past 30 years.

John, That's what worries me about Big Island. It's still relatively cheap.  But if these 'gentlemen' farmers start buying up land and developing it into gated communities or at the very least make it hard for real farmers/gardeners that want to grow on their land do their thing you'll become another extinct species.

Moderators, I apologize if this is inappropriate and would understand if you decide to delete this post.

I received an email from Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers East Hawaii Chapter re: the upcoming Hamakua Community Development Plan.  The following is the email content from the former East Hawaii Chapter President.  As a former planner that worked on the previous rounds of the regional community development plans for Hawaii County, I know first hand how the actual finished product is driven by whatever interested parties actually come out to these information gathering sessions and can mold it to their liking.  If you are living in the Hamakua region and do farm or keep even a garden, this may have an impact on what you can or can not do on ag-zoned property:

Aloha East Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers!

I am forwarding below a message from former East Hawaii Chapter President, David Longacre, who wants to alert you to a community development plan in the works that may prove restrictive to fruit growers and agriculture in Hamakua generally. Please take the time to read it and take appropriate action!

Hope to see many of you at our next meeting on MOnday evening June 27th at Komohana. More details to follow soon.

 -Richard Forster

Dave Longacre here.

I have been reviewing and attending recent HI County Planning Dept meetings to present the final draft of the Hamakua CDP to the citizenry.  I am concerned that the Plan contains language that I perceive as attempting to restrict what fruit growers (amongst others) can do on their appropriately-zoned land.  We have many fruit growers, including commercial growers, on this coast and I want to alert them to the Plan's contents and to show them how easy it is to submit a comment on the Plan by the comment deadline of June 15.

Unsettling language included in the plan suggests, for example, that "the community" explore alternatives to "tall, vegetative windbreaks."  And if "the community" has an issue with windbreaks, it follows that it may also hold a similar views towards any other trees associated with the growing of fruit.

I believe that such language is inappropriate for this plan since the agriculturally-zoned land that farmers, orchardists, and foresters utilize to practice their livelihoods and avocations is specifically zoned to permit such practices.  Period.

In my opinion, such language was included in the CDP because landowners with primarily residential or other non-ag/forestry interests don't like having their views "obstructed" by trees.  While I can understand their sentiments, the presence and use of trees is completely permitted in ag-zoned land in Hawaii County.  Even statements as innocuous-sounding as the above encouragement of windbreak "alternatives" are, I believe, attempts to restrict what foresters, fruit growers, and farmers can do with their land.  As such, they have no place in a Hawaii County document.

Please ask your HTFG members to review the CDP, specifically CDP Paragraph 4.5.6 Community Action, which depicts the windbreak language I described earlier (http://www.hawaiicountycdp.info/hamakua-cdp/draft-cdp).

Then, if one chooses, he or she can submit a comment on the plan online at http://www.hawaiicountycdp.info/hamakua-cdp/feedback/hamakua-cdp-feedback-form.  It is easy to do so.  But comments must be submitted by June 15.

 Thanks.

As a repeat and satisfied customer, I wanted to say that Flying Fox Fruits is worth being patient for. Adam is kind of a one man show, so remember he has to package everything on his own, do the communications on his own, and on top of it, tend to the very nursery that provides the plants and seeds he sells. That in mind, I'm sure he will try to get to everyone when he can.

I honestly wonder if the guy actually sleeps.   :)

Okay.  Unless I get delayed, I arrive in Orlando Airport on a Friday October 7 @922am.  Hoping to not have checkin luggage.  Then, I have to be back at Orland Airport by 2pm.

Is it doable Adam to check out your spread?

Or should I go with WGPhil's suggestions and pig out until wife and son arrive at the airport @2?

I think he's just too busy and with the passing of his family. He got to dig himself out of a big hole to get on top of his stuff.  Like someone said, your patience will be rewarded.  A while back he alluded to him possibly ceasing to take small orders.  I can imagine how long it takes to process orders that require 4 seeds this, 2 cuttings, and 1 seedling or whatever.  But glad to hear he has help.  Haven't got word back from him either, but it gives me time to at least prep for other things that need attention!
