Citrus General Discussion / SARS and citrus flavonoids
« on: March 24, 2020, 06:44:38 PM »
Maybe some of you are infected or are going to be infected. As for me for the time being I am only in quarantine so far for two weeks.
Besides a citrus grower I am a collector of rare medicinal plants mostly from traditional healers from Asia.

After reading some literature and my notes I will share with you a remedy that may or could potentially save your life.

The SARS-2 virus has two components:
1. Infection of the tissue which leads to pneumonia
2. An very strong inflammation of the lungs as a reaction of the immune system to the virus.
The later, inflammation mainly cause the death in previously sick people.

For those who are growing citrus there are two plants useful: kafir lime and yuzu leaves.
Kaffir lime leaves have been used in Thailand for their relief against flu and anti-inflammatory properties.
Some studies also place yuzu leaves with a strong antiviral properties against avian flu. A fresh leaves tea or soup can be made of the two.

One of the herbs that were used with success in Singapore during the SARS-1 especially by the Indian community in 2003 was a Ayurveda medicine: a mixture of turmeric, tusli and black pepper.
Fresh turmeric is well known antimicrobial/antiviral remedy in many scientific papers.
Tusli is a powerful adaptogen and antimicrobial herb.
Balck pepper increases bio-availability of turmeric.

Preparation:

Crush the Tulsi plant including roots and mix it with luke water. Add a spoon of fresh crushed turmeric and a quarter of teaspoon of fresh pepper powder. Then you heat the mixture on lowest setting with a glasses of water for a couple of minutes. You need to drink it twice a day before food to contain the virus.

Another mixture which I prefer is one spoon of fresh crushed turmeric, a quarter of teaspoon of fresh pepper powder and a spoon of fresh tusli leaves, all this mixed with a spoon of honey. Take this two times a day at the back of the tongues so the raisin of the turmeric sticks to the throat.

Note: I use for myself black turmeric which is several times more powerful than yellow cousin. However the yellow turmeric has the same properties. A soup of which contains good amounts of galangal is also helpful to fight inflammation. Also other wild related rhizomes have a powerful effect but you won't be able to find them, so I won't list them.

The Chinese govt also uses TCM as a complementary treatment. Each patient receives a brown soup once a day of Chinese medicinal plants.

Wish you all good health!

Citrus General Discussion / N spray burn
« on: March 17, 2020, 07:08:16 AM »
Tahiti lime burn

This is an accidental burn as I sprayed the near citrus with a nitrogen mixture spray ( urea ).
Only a couple of leaves got burnt. This still happen with UV protection.
The Tahiti lime had a massive infection with scales so I covered the plant in neem oil during the winter, like 3 months ago, and it still has a shiny oil on the leaves.
This is an example of incompatibility, I knew it so I tried to put them aside.

This usually happens during the cold season. The tip dies, then the infection goes down and if not cut it will make the plant die back. It has been spray wiyh copper but still sometimes is a problem. Yoi can see infection goes to petiol then down.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Mango Choc-anon seeds
« on: January 31, 2020, 05:15:13 PM »
My indoors grafted tree is about 120 cm high set around 8 fruits. Fruits are small because of the small pot. This mango grew well under cold conditions low to 1-3C during the night. Here sets fruits during the fall/winter.
Polyembryonic.

3 € per seed, 2.5€ postage and paypal.

"CHOC-ANON", ALSO KNOWN AS THE MIRACLE MANGO, IS A THAI MANGO THAT FRUITS IN THE WINTER AND OFTEN FRUITS IN THE SUMMER OF THE SAME YEAR PRODUCING TWO CROPS ANNUALLY. THE FRUIT ARE TYPICALLY 0.75-1.0 LBS. AND HAVE A GOLDEN YELLOW SKIN WHEN RIPE. THE PULP IS SWEET AND FIRM WITH LITTLE TO NO OBJECTIONABLE FIBER. THE TREES ARE VIGOROUS GROWERS WITH A DENSELY FOLIATED CANOPY AND UPRIGHT HABIT. THIS VARIETY IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR WINTER RESIDENTS, AND GROWERS THAT WANT TO EXTEND THEIR MANGO SEASON BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL SUMMER MONTHS. THE FRUIT RIPENS FROM NOVEMBER-JANUARY AND SOMETIMES JULY AS WELL.

'Swingle' is resistant to tristeza and Phytophthora foot rot, blight, cold, and citrus nematode. However, in some cases, trees budded onto 'Swingle' that were infected with 'severe' strains of exocortis or cachexia remained stunted and produced a bud union crease. 'Swingle' is moderatlely salt tolerant but is not adapted to heavy clay soils or calcareous soils. 'Swingle' was observed to be particularly well adapted for use with grapefruits and in some cases 'Lisbon'-type lemons.

BLACK TURMERIC (CUCURMA CAESIA)

Just harvested few rhizomes if anyone is interested. They have 'eyes' and they sprout 100%.
This black ginger I personally took it from a mountainous area in southern Laos where it grows wild in the jungle. It grows big up to 1.5 m and faster than regular black ginger from India and survives cold weather (not freezing).

Due to its rarity price is 25 € per planting piece plus shipping preferably to Europe.

It has many healing properties and used as black magic in some rituals by shamans.

Citrus General Discussion / Root Production Method
« on: January 20, 2020, 03:59:38 PM »
Root Production Method by Wayne Lovelace is a patented technique used to grow bigger and faster trees. Patent will expire soon if not renewed. The method is complex and is vague (perhaps intentionally).

The growing media is interesting.
"Our standard growing medium consists of 40% composted rice hulls, 40% pine bark, sand plus slow release fertilizer, micronutrients, and a wetting agent.  Air space is of utmost importance in this step. This media mix provides between 35%  has taught 40% air space."

-->Millet here you were looking for an application for rice hulls

It seems like he did an experiment with Carrizo and Citrumelo and had double sized trees.

Quote
After two years, the Carrizo Citrange that was grown traditionally had an average height of 24 inches, while RPM-grown Carrizo Citrange has reached heights over 48 inches. Results were similar with Swingle Citrumelo, with heights above three feet, while the non-RPM grown material averaged heights that did not exceed 22 inches.

http://www.science-infographics.org/scijourner2/2013/10/02/naturally-faster-growing-citrus/

I aspect the use of mycorrhiza and a certain type or fertilizer which is not divulged I suspect which type is used.

I used a similar method for papaya, avocados and mangoes so they can fruit and grow well in small containers, because they all have a very long and hard tap root which makes container cultivation almost impossible.
I did't try for citrus because I usually used cutting which don't have a tap root. But this is interesting and it's worth experimenting.

Citrus General Discussion / Lemon juice
« on: November 26, 2019, 12:19:35 PM »
In shops there are those Bio/Organic Italian 100% lemon juice, or even Japanese Yuzu juice.
On the ingredients they say 100% juice, no chemicals added so no preservatives.
How do they preserve the juice?
Hihj heat treatment? In this case vitamin C an half of flavonoids are dristroyed.
How can one preserve the juice naturally?

Citrus General Discussion / Shiikuwasha
« on: November 22, 2019, 07:05:15 PM »
Shiikuwasha (Citrus depressa Hayata)
A citrus distributed from the South-west of the Japanese archipelago Okinawa to Taiwan. It grows wild there and along with Tachibana they are very ancient mandarins.

My tree just started to have new growth and flowers at relatively low temperatures 10-15°C.
Very vigorous in growth habit. Not so hardy though. New growth started to melt at 2°C where satsuma didn't have a problem. However it recovered fast in a couple of days.

I will make same tests, with growth habit grafted on PT or on its on roots. See deficiency problems, resistance to alkaline soil and root rot. In spring will also try to remake a PT hybrid which might be a promising rootstock. Many applications with this tree, including shortening juvenile stage.

Who also grows it?

Citrus General Discussion / Rootrot cure
« on: November 01, 2019, 06:49:02 PM »
After searching for years for a cure for root rot in papaya, I found a plant based mixture that kills the fungi and to some extend some nematodes. I guess this will work for citrus as well. It's not commercial, I grew the medicinal plants and mix it. I target mostly phytophthora and fusarium. Sure there are chemicals which work, but they remain in plants. SO i prefer something organic.
So this winter I will test on citrus.
Which citrus in your experience has the most root rot problems?

Citrus General Discussion / Fingerlimes harvest
« on: August 27, 2019, 06:14:58 AM »
This year a small tree in a 2 gallon plastic bag made me a lot of finger limes, it looks like climate here is good for this lime, without the winter of course. I have about 25 fingerlimes at about 25-30g each. It seems like they love the hot weather but not the strong sun, so this year I shielded from UV rays and fruits didn't drop anymore.
I know some guy in southern France has a small orchard and sell these. Anyone knows about him?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Falan or Mango Thunder
« on: July 02, 2019, 08:20:00 AM »
Anyone growing Mango Falan or Mango Thunder?
This is a green mango. I have two small grafted trees with fruits. This mango cracks after too much water.
Seedlings start to bear fruits after 2 years and they are dwarf in nature. I will look into using them as a rootstock for pots.
