I notice that there are two types:

+ round shape: sour or very sour
+ elongated shape: usually sweet and bigger fruit

Looks like you met the sweet type.

The world epicentre of maprang action is Thailand, Forgot those sour green pretenders from indonesia and malaysia where they originated. The Thai trinomial naming system means Maprang is the first name. The second relates to which class it falls in priep which is sour, mayon chid which is sour to sweet when ripe and wan which is sweet. There are many selections in each of these classes. The third name usually relates to where it came from o Maprang wan Bangkok could be a theoretical name. Some mayon chid are nicely sweet when ripe and are well favoured and wan varies from bland to very pleasantly sweet. They also vary greatly in shape and fruit size.

Have one type of grafted maprang from Frankies nursery called Kai, and the other he calls Mayong Chid. Wondering where the name Kai comes from using this trinomial structure? Or did he just make it up? BTW the ones i have the Kai is sweet and Mayong Chid is sweet/sour.

Kai is spreading around in Florida as well by the sound of things. From how it has been described to me before it seems to be a Maprang Wan and the kai could have been shortened from the third name yes. It looks to be a well coloured, pleasantly tasting egg shaped fruit of around 50g to 60g so seems like a good ambassador for thai maprang.

Well all i will say is mmmmmmmmmmm
These were quite sweet. It my first foray into Maprang so I can't compare them to others.
I will say they had love aroma, that came through the package they were shipped in.
I tasted something like mild peachy over tones, hint of tangy sweetness. Firm juicy flesh.
Wow I will be planting the seeds and waiting for them to get large enough to graft.
Then maybe in 10yrs I can enjoy these lovely fruits...............
Or maybe just take a trip to PR once covid dies down long overdue to visit my friends there.

Canito muchas gracias hermano!!!!1

Might be Philipines with bullala fruit. They used to be pulasan I think before their identity crisis. By the way for those interested in knowing if the crazy start to the dry season in Cairns ended well yes it did. A fairly bi area got over 800mm (32 inches) in 8 days a crazy rainbow at my place heralded a return to weather sanity.

Sure did happen and he hill behind my house has mind blowing rainbows frequently and often in blue sky. It was a bit lame at 8am this morning as it was too late. Look at the rainbow effect in front of the trees.

There is a wind tunnel effect that blows rain sideways at times from nearby clouds.

A reject from yesterday and see once again it is in front of the hill over the veg. the extra sunlight in some seemed to dull it.

One in the video is nothing special. Maybe over rainforest, hilly or mountain backdrops and with full tropical sunshine they pack a bot more oomph. I bet Hawaii has crackerjack rainbows.

My friend, who is Thai, says Mayon Chid is especially good.

I prefer wans myself and mayon chid is the most popular in Thailand. Depends on if you prefer sweet or acid/sweet and if it is a good selection.

Will depend on where in Australia and no doubt in the Hawaiian archipelago. Very well in the right spot. For around 1500km of the Queensland coast it would be good.

Maprang seems like it should be something good to grow here and I have seen it work. But there have been two issues. The seedlings have shown poor root development in many cases and flowering has not been all that consistent.

Kai means 'egg' in Thai so that would refer to the shape.

'Wan' means sweet in Thai.

this should help understand the naming.

There is one area on this island called Waimea that has almost guaranteed rainbows. One part of the town is very dry and right next to it above it is very wet area. Double rainbows are very common there also.

You just need to get proven grafted varieties. Seedlings are quite variable, and you would have to plant a whole lot to get some winners that are adapted to your area. Suggest doing both if you want to eventually market them. Graft the best of the seedlings. It's a very worthwhile fruit.
