Osteen Mango - as a late variety
« on: September 05, 2021, 01:42:05 PM »
I have an Osten that fruited for the first time this year, held on to about 6 (into the last week of August) of which I got 3 and the critters got the rest.
I enjoyed the fruit, we had the last one today, and I wondered if any of you have experience with Osteen and would like to share your thoughts.  Do you notice any aftertaste?

For me it is one of my late season collections and this year only Beverly and Keitt held fruit longer.

I will like to read your thoughts on this variety.

Osteen is the top produced mango in Spain and handles well storage and transport. It's a commercial variety and is sought for by supermarkets in the Mediterranean for those characteristics and the colors. I'm not a big fan as it's to me just plain classic taste.

Hopefully the budwood for your Osteen tree didn’t come from the fruit and spice park .

I do not believe it did.
Is there a story I should know?

The one at the park is a fraud and actually an Eldon. Some trees that were grafted from it made it into the nursery trade at one point years ago.

I had Osteen for the first time this year.  It was nice enough that I bought scions.

Not certain but I think this might be from the USDA collection,, circa 2018.

Good, then it should be the real deal. Fairchild Garden also had a real Osteen which is where the budwood for our own tree came from.
