2021-2022 Satsuma and other Mandarin - Fruit Photos
« on: December 05, 2021, 07:16:05 AM »
Since the Satsuma/Mandarin's are ripening now, I thought it would be nice to share with everyone some photos of Satsuma fruits from my family's backyard gardens.

Please post photos of your ripe fruits and identify the variety and any comments you like to make of the taste.

I will start first with this 30yr old satsuma (older variety that is unknown-forgot) grown in my family garden which gives hundreds of fruits each year. My brother says he thinks the 2 trees has about 700 fruits this year. Just took these photos on 12/4/21. This satsuma is what I call a flat fruit since it seems to be shaped much flatter than any I have seen in grocery stores or online when searching for satsuma varieties or from the UCR variety database. The taste of the fruit today is good, mildly sweet, but it will get sweeter the longer you let it hang on the tree up until January. Skin is puffy, easy peel, no seeds.

So if you have some ripe fruits then post it here to share, thanks.

Amazing tree.  At 30 years of age the tree is at it peak.

Maybe that explains why it has been having so many fruits every year recently.

Nice fruit and pictures.  Kind of makes me sad and wondering how the trees I bought for my parents back in the 80s would be doing now in Fresno. They survived one transplant once but became too large for the second move. They were the same cultivar from all the good stuff grown in Visalia at the time. Flat like yours without any  "hump" at the stem, seedless, easy to peel, and sweetened by the valley heat.

Heck, even the nursery in Sacramento has been gone for several years!

I'm lucky that we still have these older trees planted by my dad. He also planted many persimmon trees which gives tons of fruits as well.

Here's some more mandarins I picked today:  Fallglo, Fina, Kishu & Ponkan.

I show for comparison the Lane Late Navel orange and the large Thong Dee pummelo.

I updated the subject to include the 2022 fruits since some varieties will not be ripe until Jan-Mar 2022.

Anyone have photos and taste description of mandarins you grow ?

I will post some more fruits I picked over the weekend.

Hello SC4001992,
wonderful pictures you posted of your tree, very good for comparison. Due to beeing a nearly newcomer to citrus,
I don' have so much fruiting harvest yet, but I can share pictures of my Tangelo nova and  Keraji with first fruits of the plants, riped final from october in greenhouse, but I was very satisfied with the taste for my not real citrus climate conditions in zone 7, Germany  ;D.

above pictures tangelo nova, perhaps not 100% ripe, due to more green than orange rind, but already very good aromatic taste and good sugar acid balance.

Keraji mandarin, first fruit of one of my first grafts, already good ti eat, but perhaps it would have gotten more sweet a few weeks later. Was already sweet but a little bit more acid.

tedburn, nice fruits. I have not seen a tangelo nova, looks good.

I have a keraji graft but no fruit yet so thanks for posting a photo of your fruit.

Ken, here's the latest fruits I picked this weekend. I had to group them so I can compare the taste, to much citrus to eat at one time.

The shiranui/sumo I picked were still not ripe so I'm only showing the photos, did not compare the taste with others. These sumo grafts were from the CCPP 2019 budwood, and the fruits do have seeds in some of them.

Here's Group 3:

From these 3 groups, the tangor and Iyomikan were not good tasting at all. If anyone is thinking of grafting & growing the Iyomikan I would suggest you don't, not worth it. It is very watering and has no flavor. I will be removing this grafted branch from my tree.

Many mandarin varieties and satsumas, can be ready to eat, or nearly ready to eat while still not fully yellow.

Wow Kaz I’m impressed by your collection of citrus. Very nice review and pics.

I only have a small in-ground golden nugget mandarin with sumo and Xie Shan grafted on it. I’m glad that I grafted Xie shan. Perhaps it will fruit this year.

SC4001992,

Very nice pics and comparisons.  It looks that you get a lot of bees helping you.

Noticed that your fina clementine, Kiyomi, and Ponkan all have some seeds, which were mostly due to the cross pollination with other citrus varieties.   They might be seedless if kept off cross pollination.

Ken, I have more mandarins, oranges, grapefruits, & pummelos varieties but I didn't want to do a taste taste of so many at once. Hard to eat so much citrus in one day. My Gold Nugget tree has lots of fruits but they are not ripe yet. Since there are so many fruits on the tree half of the fruits are very small and the others are more normal size.

Eric, since I have some many different varieties all multi-grafted on all my trees so I always get lots of cross pollination and tons of bees when they are flowering. But, I still think the Sumo with seeds is due to the different accession (3-types) they have at UCR CCPP budwood grove. They even show in the variety datasheet the photo of the shiranui cut in half with lots of seeds. There is one accession that seems to be the true variety with no seeds. I have that sumo fruiting also on my trees but those fruits are larger and still just turning yellow now so it will not be ripe until end of Feb.
