Sanbokan - Anyone else growing it ?
« on: December 23, 2021, 02:45:07 AM »
My Sanbokan grafted branches are going wild with fruits this year. Last year I had many 8 fruits this year the same branches have a lot more (20 fruits). I like the taste of this lemon/sour orange, it has a sweet taste so you can eat it like an orange, maybe not as sweet but still good.

My fruits are getting so large this year I had to tie ropes on the fruiting branches so it wouldn't break off. One branch has 10 fruits hanging from it. I wait until the fruit turns yellow (end of Jan) to eat it. It tastes better than my New Zealand lemon and has much more flesh/juice per fruit.

Interested in hearing what you think about this fruit. I noticed the UCR budwood program isn't offering this budwood this year.

Here's some photos I took of one grafted branch with 8-10 fruits hanging on it.

I used to have a Sanbokan tree.  However, the fruit on my tree had a bumpy rind.   I no longer have the Sanbokan, I replaced it with a variety that I preferred better.

As I can get plenty of the classic Citrus around here from farms, (Oranges and Mandarins), the Sanbokan is a standout for me. I really enjoy the sweet lemon flavour.
It also has a fragrant element that you can't get from just adding sugar to Lemon Juice.

I agree pagnr, it does have a different taste that you don't get from lemons or other citrus. Also I noticed the tree is vigorous and grows very strong with lots of branches. My 3 year old NZ lemon grafts are so small (2-3ft branches with 6 frutis) compared to the Sanbokan which is 3 x more larger now and they were grafted at the same time.

I've had one for 15+ years, I really like the large sweet fruit.

I bought my first tree this year. What color is it supposed to be when it is ripe?

I have a young potted sanbokan. Has anyone had any experience with it tolerating light frost?

The fruit will be fine down to 27F the plant itself is ok down into the teens if it's in the ground. A container tree I would not leave out below 32, you don't want the rootball to freeze.

My Sanbokan fruits finally ripened, and it tastes pretty good.
I'll post some photos once the rain stops here.

I read recently that Sanbokan is closely related to Taiwanica, Nansho Dai Dai, i.e. a very hardy Citrus. How do they compare in cold tolerance ??

Here's what these same fruits from 12-22-21 looks like today. Finally getting yellow. Taste is pretty decent, not sour like a lemon.
