It's September 1st, where are your Mangos?
« on: September 01, 2022, 08:00:27 AM »
Hi all,
I was wondering who in Florida still got Mangos on their trees. The M4 are still not ripe yet. Some Valencia Pride made it until mid-August. I hear Venus and Sweet Tart are late but mine aren't producing yet.
Rosigold was in early May, closely followed by Fairchild and Angie. Everything else (Edward, Glen, Cac, Maha, NDM, Pickering, etc.) was June & July.
Pickering was the heaviest producer, followed by Angie.
Lemon Zest had the most fungus problems followed by Maha Chanuk, Valencia Pride, M4 and NDM in that order.
Totally problem free where: Cac, Glenn, Pickering, Fairchild, Rosigold, Choc-Anon, Orange Sherbet, Edward. Angie
Not bearing yet: Sweet Tart, Son Pari, Venus, Sugar Loaf, Malika, Pinapple Pleasure, Fruit Punch.
Overall favorites this season in terms of quantity, quality and low maintenance: Pickering, Orange Sherbet, Edward
So how did your Mango season go?

I just picked another bucket of Kiett yesterday.
I should be all out mid-way through September.

Mine are in the droppings of red-bellied woodpeckers, scattered here and there.

This Sept. I have only fought with the animals for Keitt and a few Sweet Tart to be hanging on the trees today. Sweet Tart requires more of a fight as the yellow color really draws the birds to peck them till they fall off the tree. Green mangos are much easier to keep on the trees.

I saw someone that still has Neelam mangos hanging on their tree in Sept.

I believe I could have had some orange essence in Sept. but I did not want to protect them from the animals as too far away from the house.

Last year I had some Carrie that were hanging with a late bloom and since I have many Carrie trees on Sept. 1. So, many mangos might be hanging till Sept. if you want to fight with the animals and get lucky on a late bloom.

All done this year.
I do have a very confused Beverly that sent out one lonely panicle.  I don't know what the stressor could have been that only worked on one shoot on one branch.

Picked NDM twice this year. Once from normal bloom in June/July and again at the beginning of August from the second wave of bloom. One Okrung is still hanging.

I went back out and found what is probably the last Himsager (usda etc. whatever)...
Himsager is a late variety. Most years the last dropping the beginning of Sept. for me.

Last few of 2nd crop been hanging - slowly ripening for past 3 weeks. Squirrels knocked the last ripe one down Sept 4.
I've grown about 50 seedlings in 1 gallon pots from this June's crop of a big mango mother tree in our condo landscape and would like opinions as to its variety.  Since it's at least 40 years old, I figure its a Haden hybrid.  Fruit (see pic) flesh is yellow/orange, delicious, no acidity, totally fibreless. Monoembryonic embryo average 2 inches long and about 10% grow multiple (up to 7) shoots.  If seedling gets cropped by a rabbit - below all leaves - multiple shoots  emerge within 10 days (see pic).

My very lucky friend in Coral Springs still has plenty of Keitts left on his tree. He was kind enough to give me one.

Lil Gem appears to be a mid and late season winner!

While watching football, one of the boys came inside after finding another hidden ripe Sweet Tart. This time it was on a different tree in a heavily leafed spot where the birds had not pecked it luckily....

So if you want to be lucky Sweet Tart is a nice late season variety since multiple blooms can occur.

Sort of dark while watching the game but here is the picture next to an empty coke bottle for size comparison...

I told him he found it, he can eat it as I had just finished eating another small Keitt...  ;)

Speaking of lucky, I didn't expect Texas to pull it off, but it was an exciting ending! :)

Still have orange sherbet and Neelam hanging. Would possibly have had Valencia Pride but with all this rain I was concerned they would split so I went ahead and pick them

Do you still have these four little Keitts in the fridge I got from a spear fisherman on the coast
