Are there nutrients that tend to suffer most as the weather cools down?

I have not found any clear answers about mangos' tolerance of Chloride or Sodium, except that tolerance varies tremendously from one root-stock to another, as well as per scion grafted on those different root-stocks.  If you can get some 13-1 seeds(or 13/1), that might be of help.

Great answer! Do you have an idea about irrigation water Chloride range that is used without showing any damage? I'm suspecting that 5ppm in my water analysis is not enough.

Do you have any idea on how much Chloride is beneficial and not harmful in irrigation water please? All fertilizers I use are Cl free.

If the soil isn't already high in Ca, B, and Fe, you will also need to add those.


This is just a suggestion for the ratios that I could make from fertilizers that I already have. My soil is 8.4pH/90% calcareous/highly leaching sand.

I use Sequestrene for Fe, but my B is low! Could you please suggest a ratio (even with modifying what I posted earlier), my goal is to come up with a fertilizer that I use every time I water to simulate a slow release fertilizer for young seedlings < 1.5 years old.

What do you think about this combo please. (EDTA Micros)

N-   P-    K-   Mg-  S-  Z-    Mn
17- 12-  12-  3.8- 13- 0.3- 0.2

As you can see, the issue is affecting older leaves first.

I'm suspecting:

Mg deficiency?
Phosphorus deficiency/toxicity?
Sulfur deficiency?
A micro deficiency?

sandy/pH 8.4/90% calcareous

Thanks for all the replies everyone!  When I mentioned that I was looking for something that tastes similar or even better than a Kent, I was trying to give everyone reading this post some idea of what I like in a mango.  I have only tried a few varieties of mangoes and Kent's taste really good to my untrained palate.  They are very sweet and aromatic and perhaps I just like the more simple tasting mangoes but I won't know until I am able to try more varieties. 

Joe, I was thinking about a Haden but I already have a Glenn and Glenn's are supposed to be a descendant of Haden.  Would Glenn be close enough in terms of flavor profile to a Haden that it would be wise for me to grow something else instead? 

We do get a lot of Keitt's here late in the mango season and they are great mangoes.  I personally feel that Keitt's have a tad more citrusy flavor than a Kent and a Kent has a tad more tropical mangoey flavor when compared to a Keitt.  Keitt is already on my "to get" list.  I will be doing some more research on Southern Blush and Spirit of 76.  Please keep the suggestions coming in!

Simon, Leo has a seedling of Keitt that Jim really liked,. I have one grafted but it hasn't fruited yet. I just got an original Keitt off my tree today and it was really good. I don't know when Leo's Keitt ripens.

You would be surprised by how 9 years had changed Simon :)

It all depends on how those seeds were stored, but 2 weeks are generally ok according to an article that I had read.

How about Australia.

I gave up the high P teat long ago.  Most of my foods are low P like a Peters 25-5-15.  Also high P foods contribute to long internodes, legginess.  Most blame it on too much N.  Not so.

Thanks Mark, but do you think a low P will work for me with that kind of pH and 90% calcium. I'm still currently at the stage of getting seedlings established.

I always bring the brain teaser questions.

So I have few 1 year old mango seedlings in ground that showed at some point Phosphorus deficiency (8.4 pH/leaching sandy soil/ 90% Calcium). So for the last 5 weeks, I have been giving 2 Tbsp of 18-18-18 and that helped them tremendously. The seedling that had showed the least deficiency is now showing what appears to be a toxicity as described in this paragraph.

Mango trees appear to be quite sensitive to heavy phosphorus fertilization accumulating as much as 0.84 per cent phosphorus in leaves on dry weight basis against 0.08 Ė 0.175 per cent in normal leaves. This excessive phosphorus resulted in a spotting of mature leaves in fall, first appearing on the lower surface, but later on also on the upper surface.

Necrotic areas also developed on the margins of some leaves. Leaves become chlorotic and shed heavily. It also causes some drying of shoots.

How would you deal with this problem please? I have Potassium Nitrate for next week fertilizer dose and I also have Calcium Nitrate. Can I give some calcium to lock up some Phosphorus?


Edit: One week I remembered that I skipped 18-18-18 but gave about 75gr of DAP and 75gr of Potassium Nitrate  :'( :'( :'(
Edit: Just gave 20gr of Sequestrene and 15gr of EDTA chelated mix with 0.6% Zinc.
Edit: Added an image, after cleaning all the older leaves that dried up and died already.

You could probably reduce cold damage but depending on how cold it gets there, you're probably not gonna cancel out winter cold effect.

Fliptop, I donít know the answer to your question but I would guess itís possible.

I cut open the first fruit from my Sweet Tart Seedling #1, which was a runt/nubbin, and it tastes like a Sweet Tart that is over ripe because well, it was over ripe. It would have been best if I cut it open maybe two days ago but I wanted to make sure it was fully ripe. It looked super orange outside and it smelled very sweet.

When I cut it open, it was a very deep orange color but I could tell it was over ripe already. I took a Brix reading and it came out to 19.1% Brix. I definitely over watered this trying to pump up its sisters size. There is another ST Seedling #1 fruit that has the typical ST shape except itís probably 1lbs or more. Anyways, the fruit was over ripe and tasted sweet but completely lacked the Tartness that balances out the sugars. I give this fruit a 5 out of 10 because without the acidity, this mango doesnít taste very good.

There was a bit of Indochinese flavor and at 19% Brix, it was sweet enough but even a slight bit of tartness would have significantly improved its eating quality.

There are more fruit on the tree and Iíll definitely report back on the much larger fruit.

I believe Brad has some fruit on the Sweet start seedlings we planted at his orchard as well.

:) No offense, and just for the sake of argument...Could this might be like saying you should combine the two greatest perfumes to make a super-perfume or combine the best Italian wine with the best French wine to create a super-wine?  I could give other examples of such "hybrids."  I would argue with "every great mango seems to be missing that one thing."  Maybe you haven't tasted a great mango? ???

Maybe I haven't phrased it correctly then, what is that one great mango that you wish it also had that one other characteristic :) Think of a Lemon Zest without the disease susceptibility for example...

Osteen is the top produced mango in Spain and handles well storage and transport. It's a commercial variety and is sought for by supermarkets in the Mediterranean for those characteristics and the colors. I'm not a big fan as it's to me just plain classic taste.

Let's suppose we create a one perfect mango out of two other varieties, what would you pick?

From my side, I would try an Alphonso with a Keitt. The goal is to get a reliable Alphonso or a Keitt with an Indian spice.

I was wondering what would be your most perfumed mango that you had please.

A very perfumed mango in my definition is a one that fills up the room with its smell, and has a strong smell that stays on your fingers even after you wash them.

In my case, I once tried an Egyptian mango called Seddik and it matches all these characteristics. Seddik leaves also smell very strong, with the distinct Indian spice.


This year my unknown mango tree has some yellow patch in the middle.
It only shows on old leaves, the new young leaves look normal. This tree is about 3 years old, 2nd year in the ground. About 6 ft tall.
Is it lack of nitrogen? Or too much water?
Other Zill varieties grafted are doing well.
They all get the same fertilizer and same watering schedule.

Just read this today and thought of you.

Unless you added a NIS surfactant it just rolled off the leaf. Mango is about as bad as rose when it comes to leaf surface tension.  Meaning there is no risk of burn here. 

Best treatment is one of the Dyna-Gro foods at a rate of 1/2 tsp/gallon with 1 tsp. of a surfactant added.  Try 1 tsp. if you have a low salt carrier like rainwater.

Thanks Mark, I completely forgot about surfactants, I assumed that when a product is advertised as foliar it would already have some but you never know.

Interesting as actually 1 tsp/gallon is like 1.5 g/L.

Recently I tried 2.3% of potassium nitrate 23g/L and I had thought first that I went crazy, and  was expecting damage but to my surprise plants (Mango seedlings) were super happy with it.

Today I had 20-20-20 with micros that shows 2.5 to 3g/L and I thought I would ask when foliar feeding, what would be the nutrient to pay the most attention to please?

Potassium nitrate is like 13-0-46 but I wanted to give phosphorus too and I thought the 3g dose would be a way smaller than 23g of KNO3

If we do the math:
23g/L of KNO3 is 3g of N and 10.6G Of KO2.
3g/L  of 20-20-20 is 0.6g of N, 0.6 of PO5 and 0.6 of KO2.

So if Nitrogen is the issue, I could go with as much as 5 times of 20-20-20 (15g) to reach 3g N.

Do you have any experience with going crazy with dosage and not seeing a negative effect?

I labeled many as citrusy so they must be in those. I wish someone breeds a less finicky Mallika, I do enjoy them even without Indian type spice.
