Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cacao flower bud
« on: April 29, 2015, 05:54:35 PM »
Noticed my first ever flower bud on any of my cacao. Actually on my second shortest tree, it's height is just at 3 feet.
Admit I am surprised to see it so close to new growth, I thought it would flower closer to the trunk on older growth. Maybe some just flower this way, I don't know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit variety "Small", any info on it?
« on: February 26, 2015, 03:47:34 PM »
At our fruit club meeting last night, I got to pick a plant off the door prize table. Only thing still there that interested me was a jackfruit (grafted), the white plastic wrap around tag at the base said "Small" as a variety, it also had a Pine Island jackfruit tag hanging from a branch.

I have never heard of a variety "Small" anybody know anything about this one? The name sounds like it would fit in with some of the other recent Fairchild releases like Hardy and Sweet.

Or possibly a Pine Island creation?

Thanks.

Was trimming branches of one of the oaks this morning, and I didn't move one of the potted jaboticabas far enough away and a falling branch busted of some of the jabo's branches.
Can they be rooted some how? Rooting hormone and damp sphagnum moss wrapped in plastic/foil? Rooted in water? Clean cut the end first?
They are about 1 to 2 feet long and the thickest is less than .38 diameter and the plant they broke off was starting to flush out some new growth.

Thanks for any info.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Valentini fruit ice creams
« on: December 27, 2013, 06:22:13 PM »
Was out grocery shopping with the girlfriend this afternoon and she left me own my own while she went back to get some tomatoes. So I wandered down the ice cream (frozen dessert) isle looking to get either the Publix "Chocolate Trinity" or the Publix/Barnies "Santa's White Christmas" ice cream. But before I got to the area with all the Publix brand ice creams, saw a container emblazoned with "MANGO" across the front, so I stopped to take a look. The brand is Valentini, located in Hialeah FL, and pretty much all the fruit base is imported, I had never seen it before in our Publix (probably just never really looked). They had other flavors also other than mango, also had Mamey, Gauva, Coconut, Orange-pineapple and more, some are flavors and not fruits like Mantecado, Malta and Naranja Piña.

Ended up getting a small containers to try of both the Mango and Mamey for later.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fairchild's propagated jackfruit
« on: August 05, 2013, 05:31:01 AM »
Does anybody in the loop with the Fairchild people know if they have a jackfruit variety they are calling "Hardy Fairchild" or "Fairchild Hardy"?

A month or so back the tropical fruit club had a trip to Fairchild (I didn't make it) and one of the members brought back some jackfruit seeds that he got from a fruit there, and he was saying that the name was either Hardy Fairchild or Fairchild Hardy. I am pretty sure he said that one of the big names (Rollins or Campbell maybe) gave them to him.

Anyways, google search comes up empty on both versions of that name, and wondering if he got the name mixed up or if maybe the name is correct and there is just no chatter about it.

I can find a reference to a Sweet Fairchild jackfruit.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit rescue
« on: July 07, 2013, 10:54:07 AM »
The other day I was working in my driveway building some frames for Dragon fruit trellises. Neighbors from a few houses down where out on a walk and stopped by to see what I was building this time. They moved up from the Miami area about 5 years ago, and we got to talking plants, fruit trees and such (I have alot of potted plants in the driveway and around my front yard). I have a Heliconia Rostrata in bloom, they really liked the look, so I gave them a few of my extras that I had potted up (paying them froward from ofdsurfer). They followed up with "we have a few fruit trees in pots that we will probably never plant that you can have". Turns out that neighbor next to them bought them, never ground planted them, and gave 'em to them when he moved, and that was 2-3 years ago. They had a carambola, didn't know what variety, the tag had disintegrated long ago, but said that it put out good fruit, so I said I would take it (it had been re-potted somewhere along it's way, but needs to be re-potted again).
Next was a grafted jackfruit, they didn't know what variety and the tag disintegrated, also had been re-potted along the way (but needs to be out of that pot), but it looked good, new growth flushes from all the rain recently. The pot was extremely light in weight when I lifted it, but I set it in a tray and watered it good, once the soil sucked up some water it weighed closer to what I would have expected. Didn't look real close at the roots yet, but didn't seem like a gnarly mess of roots and didn't notice a tap root circling inside the pot. I know I didn't break one off lifting up, but don't know how many times it has been moved around and I would think from the pot size it would have had roots coming thru the bottom.
Here is a picture of the jackfruit, 5 foot tall above the pot.

Some of the new growth.

Now to plant it in the yard somewhere.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID help, Mamey Sapote or something else
« on: December 26, 2012, 06:31:48 PM »
Was over at a friends house a couple of months back, getting a tour of her plants & trees. I mentioned that I had a small unknown variety of Mamey Sapote that I started from a seed. She replied that she had one in a pot that I could have, but she could not remember the variety. It is about 3-4 foot, not grafted (as far as I can tell).
The thing is the leaves on the plant from her look different than the ones on my small seedling, don't know if it is because mine is so small, or if what I got is actually something else. And I don't know enough about what they should look like to know for sure.
First two pictures are of my Mamey Sapote seedling.

These 4 are of the larger one I was given (ignore the weevil damage).

Flash kinda washed this one out the leaves are not yellowish.

Any thoughts on if the larger one is a type of mamey sapote or does it look like something else.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / It's twins
« on: December 17, 2012, 05:09:00 PM »
A couple weeks back a friend gave me the last of her Leung Bang jackfruit from her tree and about 2 dozen seeds from it. I planted the seeds, all have sprouted and I noticed that one of them are twins. Just thought it was neat, twin sprouts from a single seed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya...damage already done?
« on: October 02, 2012, 05:46:10 PM »
Am I correct to assume that the little piles of waxy stuff on the young papaya fruit is an indicator that a papaya fruit fly has already visited? Or is it something normal with papaya or some other insect?
First time growing papaya so the papaya fruit fly indicators are new to me.

I am guessing PFF. So, dispose of those fruits, and start bagging the new ones as soon as it looks like fruit?

Anything else work at keeping the PFF away?
Does spraying with something like Surround help?

Recipes / Mango bread for when life gives you mucho mangos
« on: June 14, 2012, 07:38:43 PM »
Mango Bread

Ingredients:
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon*
3 large eggs
½ cup vegetable oil (or ¼ vegetable oil and ¼ cup macadamia nut oil)
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice**
2 cups chopped fresh ripe mango (about 2 medium mangos)***
½ cup macadamia nuts, halved****

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (F). Grease a 9-inch by 5-inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt & cinnamon. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Whisk together in a small bowl the eggs, oil and lemon juice and pour the mixture into the well in the dry ingredients. Lightly combine, and then stir in the mango and nuts. Do not over mix. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan. Bake 65-70 minutes*****, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, and then turn out onto a rack covered with a clean dishtowel, to avoid indentations. Let the bread cool for at least 10 additional minutes before slicing. The bread can be served warmed (under the broiler for a few), enhanced perhaps with a bit of butter.

**********************************************************************************

* I use about a tablespoon of ground cinnamon
** I use Nelli & Joe’s brand Key West Lime Juice (from a bottle)
*** I use two mangos per loaf, no matter what the size (the ones I use tend to be larger than medium sized, I usually use Kent mangos)
**** I use sliced almonds, a handful (probably between ½ cup and a full cup)
***** The baking time will vary depending on how juicy the mangos are. By using two whole mangos, 70 minutes is about the minimum baking time. Mine always go longer, but I check at 70 then add 10 & check, add 10 & check, until done.

Variations that I tried and that I like:
Add a handful of dried cranberries (adds tartness).
Add a handful of dried blueberries (very sweet)
Add powder ginger (I use a heaping tablespoon, I like ginger and think it goes good with mango)
Use chopped pecans instead of almonds

I have also baked it in mini loaf pans and big muffin pans (adjust baking time)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mallika mango question
« on: May 11, 2012, 09:04:35 AM »
I understand for best taste of the Mallika mango it should be picked at  mature green and put in a cardboard box (the camel dung method is not an option) and kept at room temp to ripen (usually a week or two), and usually ripe from June-July.

How do you know/tell when it is "mature green" and ready to pick?
I have my first ever fruit (and only) on my potted Mallika mango, probably still awhile away from being the "mature green" stage, but would like to know how to tell.
Just wait until there is a hint of color change?
Here is a picture from this morning.

Have also heard that they will ripen on the tree, but want to save that experiment till I have more fruits.

Thanks for any info.
