Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Interesting Japanese persimmon cultivars
« on: November 07, 2022, 11:43:44 PM »
Kaz, have you tried the Suruga persimmon? It's described as being non astringent, really sweet, rich flavor.  My grafts didn't take last year.  What about Coffee Cake?  I think it's non astringent but may need a pollinator.  i heard a lecture a couple years ago and I think that was one of the researchers favorite.

Janet

Coffee cake is definitely non astringent but apparently the fruit quality greatly improves if pollinated by the chocolate variety

Heres some coffee cakes off my tree from this year

To be honest, that seedling looks pretty rough.  I suspect that even if you kept it above 50F from now on it will rapidly decline.

However, I'm happy for you on your first soursop flower!  Mine also flowered for the first time this year, but fruit did not set.  I'm hopeful it will hold fruit next year.

Oh for sure looks like shit lol I’m just surprised it hasn’t defoliated and shriveled up days later. And thanks, it sucks it finally started pumping out flowers as I was bringing it back in the basement for the winter. Next year looks promising

Could it be a ficus of some kind? Such as a ficus aurea (aka strangler fig).

Definitely has ficus characteristics

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop observations
« on: October 21, 2022, 08:43:18 PM »
When I first started growing soursop trees all the information online made it seem like under 50 degrees and the tree would be in trouble. Recently had our first frost earlier this week with temps down to 32 and I left a seedling outside. I thought this tree would be a goner but even with ice casing the cup it was in, the tree is still alive while only showing minor damage.

On a different note, finally have soursop flowering after what is probably 6 years

I'm growing a "vernon" white sapote tree in 7A so its doable. Tree is in around a 30 gallon pot and stays in the 3.5-4' range.

sacha inchi

Yeah that's a definite winner.

Sacha inchi, never heard of this seed.  Sounds like a fantastic food option.  Any reviews on taste or preparation?  Sounds tropical so probably not easy to acquire in US markets, amiright?

kinda like a chalky peanut butter type profile. I'm pretty sure it has to be roasted. You can buy roasted nuts or powder online and amazon. I throw some powder in my smoothies all the time.

I have yuzu and xie shan satsuma in ground with only a non heated hoop house as protection in 7A

I overwinter mine in my basement under grow lights with no issues. One year it was the most productive plant in terms of pushing out new growth while everything else was pretty much dormant

Those are some sweet trees! I'm late to see this post but would have been worth the two hour round trip for something of that size at that price

They most likely still have some. I'd give them a call

Leaves of tree from Lara (top)  vs temperate jujube (bottom)

Thanks, but the description is "Grafted Jujubee 1 Gallon Tree" not Thai jujube.

Lara keeps the varieties below the header. Its a taiwanese thornless.

The taiwanese thornless is sold out  when I did the search.
https://larafarmsmiami.com/search?q=Jujube+

That might just be an old existing listing. I bought a tree from the first listing the other day and my order is for taiwanese thornless on the receipt.

If it's taiwanese thornless, I would purchase it.  I am very afraid it is not, waste a lot time to grow one it is not the variety I need.

or you could message lara farms directly and know for sure...

Came across a great deal on some large sized grafted trees at brocks farms in new jersey if anybody in the area is interested. Trees were marked down 75%. They had different varieties of lemon, orange, and some trees labeled shiranui tangerine which I'm assuming was a mislabel and should actually be mandarin.

Picked up this sambo lemon for only $50
