My Luc plant is not looking so good, and I am looking for another plant. Larger size would be nice.

Where can I find a nice plant?

Hello all.

Looking to purchase a few good varieties of sugarcane. Buddha Belly, Halali, and others. Anyone growing sugarcane that can help me out? Any suggestions?

Hello.

I have a 6 foot + Alano sapodilla, and a 6 foot + Beaumont macadamia tree that need to be dug up to make room for more mangoes. Both have produced fruits/nuts. Partially dug up already, might need some digging help. If you are interested and have something to trade let me know. Otherwise, free if I don't have to finish digging them up.

South Miami area. Local pickup only.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for a Neem tree
« on: July 30, 2019, 05:25:59 PM »
Hello Everyone.

My neem tree just bit the dust. Got too big for its pot and slowly wasted away.

Does anyone have a neem tree for sale in South Miami, or shipped?

Thanks!

Hey everyone.

I'm having some trouble hand pollinating rollinia/biriba. Female flowers and male flowers are showing up a day or 2 apart from each other. Can I refrigerate or freeze the pollen for the next round of female flowers? Or, is there another way to store viable pollen for a day or 2?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangosteen Advice Thread
« on: November 17, 2018, 02:04:17 PM »
I'm looking for some ideas on how to proceed with my mangosteen project. Since South FL soil is full of limestone (pic below shows just how bad. It is solid limestone at the bottom of that hole, had to use a jackhammer to get that deep), I was thinking of creating suitable soil, and then placing the plant above the amended soil, on a raised mound secured by rootsaver pots that will be attached to one another.

Just had this hole dug. Thinking I should line it. The hole is roughly 43 inches diameter by 2 feet deep. Calculates to a little over 150 gallons.

How should I line it? Should I leave holes for drainage? Are there any liners with copper in them, and if so, are they safe to use?

Also, any advice on soil composition is appreciated. "deep rich organic soil, especially sandy loam or laterite" is recommended on the hort.purdue.edu site. How might I achieve such soil?

Here is a pic of the tree

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Aphids Alter Plant Chemistry
« on: August 01, 2018, 11:34:59 AM »
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/07/180731092057.htm

Found this interesting article about aphids changing/enhancing the sugar, organic acid, and amino acid content of plants. Got me to wondering, might some "pests" be good for our plants/fruits if kept in-check? Anyone have any experience or insight into matters like this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Great Morning for Mangoes
« on: May 19, 2018, 09:50:12 AM »
Having a tough time waiting for ours to ripen, so took a little drive

Grabbed a nice selection of Florigon, Nectar of Neptune, Nam Doc Mai, Angie, Manalita, and Chao Savoy

Some of the selection that was available. There were quite a few crates of other mangoes as well.

Already tried a Manalita. Very good, low fiber, sweet and tangy. Going to be a good weekend.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Well Water Treatment
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:52:35 AM »
Hello everyone.

Does anyone have advice on treating well water for a sprinkler system? I live in south florida with limestone soil, and think the well water is pretty hard and alkaline. Where the sprinkler hits a bit window, getting some spotting and residue on the glass that is difficult to remove. Also, want the plants to have best water possible. Any recommendations or suggestions?

Thanks, and apologies if this has been covered before. Couldn't find info in my searches, but not sure I am using the search engine effectively.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jujubes Make Me Happy
« on: February 08, 2018, 09:29:03 AM »
Hello all. Here are some recent pics of my 2 Indian jujube trees with fruits. Not too sweet unless they start to turn orangish, but they are so crisp and refreshing, with just enough sweetness. I like hi brix fruit, but also like to eat fruit that is not overpoweringly sugary. Going to add some shredded jujube to a green papaya salad, think it will be a hit.

Hello everyone. Looking for an m. casturi plant, or cuttings for grafting. Anyone know where I can find one? Found space for one more large tree, think I'm going to graft kuini and casturi together. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fairchild Farm Strange Mangoes
« on: November 11, 2017, 08:54:40 AM »
Recently enjoyed a tour of the Fairchild Farm. Dr. Ledesma was kind enough to show us around the property. Lots of amazing and rare fruits. Many cultivars of mango and sapodilla I had never heard of. Particularly interesting was the mango research she is doing.

Here are some pics of mango hybrids and other mango projects she is working on.

Was sad to hear that funding has really dwindled. Hope that she and others like her will continue to conduct research and advance the field.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Yellow Dragon Fruit Pollen Needed
« on: July 22, 2017, 11:47:04 AM »
Looking for yellow dragon fruit (selenicereus megalanthus) pollen to pollinate my lone first flower. I can send a few things back in trade, such as some seeds from the cross, various plant cuttings to choose from, or can pay shipping and labor.

I've read that they are self fertile and usually pollinate well enough naturally. But the fruit size is considerably smaller, with lower brix and seed count unless they get some help with the process.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangosteen Pics from Fairchild
« on: July 01, 2017, 12:26:36 PM »
Went to Mango Fest 2017 today, and had a great time checking everything out; especially the mangosteen trees. They have several trees fruiting, 3 medium sized ones very close together, and I believe the smaller one may be mangosteen as well. Also, they have durian growing rather large there. Did not notice any fruits on that tree.

...and a bunch o' mangoes

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizing Biriba/Rollinia
« on: February 01, 2017, 11:51:10 AM »
Hello everyone. I have a biriba/rollinia tree in-ground that is probably 9 feet or more. It has what appear to be a few tiny flowers starting to pop out, first time it has flowered. Almost all of the leaves have recently dropped, has to be from the cold spells. Is it a good idea to fertilize now or should I just leave it be? It has been about 3+ months since last fertilization. Thanks!
