I'll drive down on the Friday afternoon to pick up fertilizer from Escondido or Temecula, then stay at a friend's place for the weekend.

You guys want to trade anything?
Robert, do you want more lucuma scions? I got the tree moved to a sunny spot this year so that it might actually fruit.
Can I get some white sapote scions if you have extra?

Does anyone have more information like what types of fruit are going to be there? I'm a member of CRFG but haven't gone to any meetings because my daughters keep me busy. Thanks,

Simon

It's a drought tolerant fruit theme this year, so cactuses and other lower water fruits like feijoa and pomegranate. You can go to the website to see the list of speakers. Festivaloffruit.com

What is the correct web address?
I tried both www.festivaloffruit.com, and www.festivaloffruits.com. Neither one works.
Thanks,

I wanted to go and had planned on going for months but I ended up being sick. Bummer.

Brianl, what type of garcinias did you get and what types where available?  How was the plant market. I was looking forward to roaming around that.

When I got there at 9am, all I saw were people carrying 5 gallon pots with cactus cuttings in them. Those were the last of them. There were some other sellers with interesting plants such as different varieties of vanilla orchids, cashew, and chestnut.

The marketplace was the biggest I've seen for FoF. The other one I went to was Arizona. I didn't have time to visit the marketplace that time.

It's great to finally meet Robert. I didn't want to talk to the people from LA so much since I see them often. I did end up talking to Glen Woodmansee for a while about airlayering tricks. Probably should have saved that till next month. This coming weekend, I will graft some of the feijoa scions he brought to the festival. Hope they will survive triple-digit temperatures. Saving some for later if they don't.

Brian -- you're in the Diablo Valley, right?  Ashok mentioned you were headed down and were looking for Muntingia.  I'm growing it, and can propagate more if you didn't manage to find out.  Also, if you're interested, I have a bunch of Garcinias right now (they're small).

Oh Richard, I bought 4-small Jabo's from you but didn't really get chance to talk with you as I was behind Steve Murreys' huge buy!
Appreciate all the cultivars I was able to pick up from you Thanks ;) 8)

For feijoa, Glen still has some plants leftover from his imports from New Zealand to sell. They're larger now. I think he hasn't recouped back the over 1k he lost from the failed import. I would buy one from him if I had more land.

From the slides, the triumph he imported looks very good. Lots of jelly. That's what I look for. But he also likes Marjane, which didn't look like there's much jelly but he said it's pretty sweet.

There's a lot of seedling selling going on and Triumph is the worse. You really have to know the source of that variety to get what you think you're getting.

He also donated his varieties to the Huntington, so it now has the largest collection either outside New Zealand or in the world.

Now that nazameth is not propagated by LaVerne for home depot anymore, there's really nowhere to find good varieties other than what Glen brought in. Nazemeth was a good one. LaVerne still does Coolidgei and calls it  Coolidge, which it's not. I forgot what was said about that one. The tree I got from HD does not want to fruit at all. But my graft of Apollo was only on a small twig and now has 3 fruits hanging.

Why did La Verne stop propagating nazameth?  I thought it was the better tasting of the two they propagated. I bought it but not Coolidge based on people saying the Coolidge wasn't very good.

It sounds like I will have to contact him and see what varieties he has available. I've found, like you said, that the grafted varieties are hard to find.

I forgot to say there are local varieties as well but they are still hard to find. Lickver's pride, King, and Nazameth are from CRFG members. San Diego Botanical garden has about 5 varieties but all of the labelled ones don't taste very good. There's an unlabelled tree that's better than the rest.

I'm not sure why LaVerne doesn't do Nazemeth anymore. Yes, it is the better one but I didn't know and bought the other one. Now it's a rootstock for grafting since it doesn't produce for me.

I think Exotica carries a lot of different pineapple guava varieties -- I remember something like 10 different varieties when I was there.  (I don't know how they do their propagation, though.)

There's a guy up in NorCal Mark Albert which has some very good Feijoa selections.  he sometimes shows up at the scion exchanges.

All of Exotica's feijoas are seedlings except for the Nakitas. The Nakitas are grafted but $75 each.

I have heard very good things about Lickvers Pride. I would love to get one. Does anyone know where I could get one?
