Question on Miracle Fruit Tree
« on: July 24, 2023, 09:20:25 PM »
I just purchased a Miracle Fruit tree and it came with one smaller branch broken.

My question is, anyone know if you can root the cutting or graft it to another variety?

My understanding is you can root cuttings (source: https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/HS1449), though I haven't tried this.

I have tried and failed many times to root softwood cuttings of my miracle fruit, with and without rooting hormone, in sand, in peat and perlite, in vermiculite, with and without bottom heat.

If you hit on the winning combination let me know!

Carolyn

PS - I have regular success with seeds  ;D

I grew a couple trees frim air layers, once. It was my impressiin that they were slightly weaker than seed grown trees--but I can't verify this for sure.

I divided a root sucker and it survived a year or more without much growth, then croaked.  I imagine an aerial cutting would do even worse

My plant is very healthy looking, very busy, but only about 15" tall in a 3 gallon pot. At least it came with one ripe fruit on the tree so I get to taste my first fruit.

I will get my sour things in an row and try them all after eating the one berry, I hear the miracle taste only last about 30 minutes after eating the fruit.

Too bad I don't have any ripe macrophylla fruits now, only lemons and limes. Any other suggestions for fruits to try with this?

Try EVERYTHING you have, not just fruits.
Works on acids in food/drinks, the more acid, the greater the affect.
But plenty of food/drinks that you would not consider to be sour will have acids, and the flavor will change, for better or for worse.

Examples: goat cheese, beer, etc.

Anything!!!...that is anything with a sour component. Yogurt, kombucha, sourdough bread, old fashioned sausages, grapes, apples, fermented vegetables, cucumbers, bananas...

Feijoa (out of season I think in Cali but Sprouts has them periodically) and barbados cherry (including unripe) are pretty amazing in addition to the stuff mentioned so far.

Passionfruit is my top choice after eating a miracle fruit. In my opinion, super high acid fruit like lemons and limes are a bit strong to eat in quantity. Passionfruit seems just right. I have tried many of the things mentioned and agree that there are surprising changes. It makes you suddenly realize just how much sugar is in things like ketchup and bbq sauce (I do not recommend either after miracle fruit). The taste lasts longer if you eat more berries. I have noticed an effect as much as 2 hours after consuming a handful (or more) of berries.
