the race does matter. mexican avocados do not hang as long as guatemalan. I do not have any experience with west indian. It really depends on the variety though. The optimal window is not all that long. There is about a 1-2 month window max where fruit are good enough to pick but not going bad in some way. The ways it can go bad if picked too late are bad flavor, dried up fruit, dropping fruit, seed sprouting in the fruit, skin cracking (on mexican type). And if you pick it too soon, it is watery and or will not even ripen and soften up properly. You kind of just have to figure out what the right time is for the particular variety at your location and use that as a reference each year.
No idea what type it is but your fruit will be ready to pick in late winter or spring most likely. Try and wait until February and try one. If it is watery wait another few months and try another one.

Really, ok. I'm ignorant of how that works. I assumed it would take on the variety of the Avocado where it came from. Thanks
Thanx Brad. That is helpful info. In my case the only two avos that I currently have are "Mexicola Grande' and 'Mexicola', both chosen for their somewhat smaller mature height (25' and 15') and for their relative cold hardiness for here in west central Florida.I also opted on these two cultivars because of their smaller fruit size.Cheers!Paul M.==Quote from: spaugh on August 13, 2024, 12:37:19 AMthe race does matter. mexican avocados do not hang as long as guatemalan. Day avocado 🥑 is a good option for Tampa, Florida
Congratulations, you have a new variety, and it fruited at a fairly young age when grown from seed. Do you remember what variety of avocado you bought when you planted the seed?
