What kind of Avocado Tree? When to pick?
« on: August 12, 2024, 09:51:21 PM »
I grew this avocado tree from a pit around 5 years ago, so I've no idea what kind of avocado tree it is. Any idea how I can find out or can someone identify it? On a related issue, the fruit pictured has grown since spring, my first year seeing any fruit, I have around 8 fruit of the same size. When should I remove it from the tree? I'm in the Central Valley of California if that helps.

No idea what type it is but your fruit will be ready to pick in late winter or spring most likely.  Try and wait until February and try one.  If it is watery wait another few months and try another one.

Brad, how long can one expect mature avocado fruit to hang, unripened, on the tree?

Does the cultivar that it is make a difference with how long fruits will hang after they are mature?

Or would the time be more related to which race of avocado it is? (Mexican, Guatemalan, Caribbean.)

Just curious . . . .

the race does matter.  mexican avocados do not hang as long as guatemalan.  I do not have any experience with west indian.

It really depends on the variety though.  The optimal window is not all that long.  There is about a 1-2 month window max where fruit are good enough to pick but not going bad in some way.  The ways it can go bad if picked too late are bad flavor, dried up fruit, dropping fruit, seed sprouting in the fruit, skin cracking (on mexican type).   And if you pick it too soon, it is watery and or will not even ripen and soften up properly.

You kind of just have to figure out what the right time is for the particular variety at your location and use that as a reference each year.

Thanx Brad.  That is helpful info.

In my case the only two avos that I currently have are "Mexicola Grande' and 'Mexicola', both chosen for their somewhat smaller mature height (25' and 15') and for their relative cold hardiness for here in west central Florida.

I also opted on these two cultivars because of their smaller fruit size.

Cheers!

Since it’s your first time with fruit, it might be best to wait until the avocados start to feel slightly soft when you gently squeeze them.

Thank you, is there a way to tell which variety you have?

You grew it from a seed and didn't graft it so it's a brand-new variety.  If you grew it from a Hass seed, then it's 50% Hass for sure.

Really, ok. I'm ignorant of how that works. I assumed it would take on the variety of the Avocado where it came from.

Thanks

Congratulations, you have a new variety, and it fruited at a fairly young age when grown from seed. Do you remember what variety of avocado you bought when you planted the seed?

I don't but I would guess at Hass, but that would be a wild guess.

Your tree looks very healthy and happy by the way.

If the avocados suck, you can change variety pretty easily with a tree that size it will come back nicely after top working.
