Title: Persimmons Graft Question
Post by: MotherofDragons on May 12, 2022, 12:48:31 PM
Hi group! I re-did a Persimmons graft maybe a few weeks ago and had the pot in shade on a table. The little green bud was swelling and I was watching it every day, most excitedly. Well, mysteriously the bud was picked off likely by my kids or their friend that came over. I'm pretty devastated. Unfortunately since I already re-did the graft there isn't enough rootstock left to re-graft this year and I will have to let a new sucker grow.

My question is, is there any possibility the node will push a new bud? There are no other nodes on this graft. I got a bit into reading about axillary buds and that some plants have more than one bud per node, and others are "spent" after pushing green growth. I guess I wanted to confirm this is a total fail at this point.

Thanks!

Ive experienced that persimmon has two side buds that accompany the main one, realized that after the main buds on my persimmons were damaged by frost past year.
If there are teeny tiny little green nubs at the site, it may sprout back. However in order for it to sprout u mush remove any growth on the rootstock, which it kinda dangerous ,since the graft may not sprout and u may be just weakening the rootstock.
A pic would help also  ....

Sorry for the quote, i should have just posted.

I guess I left out some important details! I was upset that my Persimmon dreams were blown for the year, AGAIN!! My grafts always push and grow (2nd/3rd year trying), but I've lost my trees either because they were planted out too soon in my climate/gophers/dogs/kids, name it!!

My scion only had one bud per node, unfortunately that bud is now gone. This was a good learning experience and argument for why it could be beneficial to graft a 2-node piece of scion in the future if I can. Curious though if you would let more than one develop if it was you? On my Fig cuttings I scratch off all growth except from one node. There is no other growth on the persimmon rootstock as these were scion cleft grafted onto small 1yr old D. lotus rootstocks to make singular trees. I will leave it and keep an eye on it and see what happens. Likely it will shrivel, and the rootstock will sucker for me to use next year (though if it can grow well enough, I hear Persimmon can be summer grafted with great success). Here are before and after pictures.

After thinking about it overnight and reading about summer grafting success with Persimmon I ended up on Fruitwood Nursery and it was meant to be. I realized they are just about to stop shipping (website says mid-May), but by some miracle they still had Persimmon rootstock and scion. I bit the bullet and ordered 5x more rootstocks and scion.

I think this still has a chance, wait on it, eather way your roottock is so small now if it fails it will prolly sprout from the roots. Just put somethink to protect it , like chicken wire mesh or smt.
When i graft, yet not persimmons i awlays use a scion with two buds, u can probably do more on a healthy strong rootstock, but usually 2 buds on the scion is sufficient.

Thanks for the input. It definitely will sucker, been picking them since I grafted. I will let it do it's thing until the graft fails then let one grow.

An update on this learning experience. There are signs of green growth where the previous bud had been plucked out. Picture quality is pretty bad, new phone still refuses to zoom and focus well. I did allow a root sucker to develop and it has a few leaves to support the rootstock. If this forms a bud I think I will cut that back to help push energy to the graft.
