Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Bacon Avocados
« on: January 09, 2023, 02:41:32 PM »
Ehh I only have one bacon tree and it grows harder and fruits harder than any other tree and every year and stays super green and they taste ok.  You probably never had a good ripe one.  Although I really am not a huge fan, they can be ok.  We rated them against every type of high end avocado in May 2021 and over 20 people attended the tasting and rated every avocado and bacon was in the top half above many of the hyped up commercial garbage that UC system has been pushing.  They averaged a higher rating with over 20 people than a whole lot of other types and were a surprise high rated fruit that day.

For those inexperienced with tasting many varieties this information is invaluable. Thanks for sharing. The whole Bacon conundrum always perplexes me and I can never decide if it's worth it. So many people have a hard stance on it one way or another.

Seedlings in my yard flowered any where from 9 months to 3rd year.
On cold winter some loss all leaves and some kept leaves.

Guava flowers on new growth.
I trim all the branches in Feb.
Many flowers open by spring to early summer.

Thank you!! I will keep my fingers cross for this coming year as it's more established now. I will be sure to cut it back after our last frost in Feb.

I have a Guava seedling that I planted in 2019 as a 1 gal. It is from Cal-Poly Pomona's farm store/nursery. I had emailed them after buying it during one of their tropical fruit sales (for $5!) and asked about it's origin. This is what I was told, it "was a discovery by Prof emeritus, Dr. Greg Partida. Propagated by seed. Has a fragrance of strawberries, not super pink flesh."

It has not fruited yet, and has had some leaf drop each Winter and is about 3ft tall in bush form.

Can you experienced Guava masters guess if I might see some flowers (and what time of year) this coming year? How long are you waiting for fruits from your young Guavas? I am in Riverside County CA for weather reference. I'm dying to taste it. I haven't seen anyone else mention acquiring one from Cal-Poly.

I would love to throw my hat in the ring, on the off-chance you have enough to go around. Awesome opportunity!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Persimmons Graft Question
« on: May 28, 2022, 04:55:52 PM »
An update on this learning experience. There are signs of green growth where the previous bud had been plucked out. Picture quality is pretty bad, new phone still refuses to zoom and focus well. I did allow a root sucker to develop and it has a few leaves to support the rootstock. If this forms a bud I think I will cut that back to help push energy to the graft.

Thanks for the input. It definitely will sucker, been picking them since I grafted. I will let it do it's thing until the graft fails then let one grow.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Persimmons Graft Question

I guess I left out some important details! I was upset that my Persimmon dreams were blown for the year, AGAIN!! My grafts always push and grow (2nd/3rd year trying), but I've lost my trees either because they were planted out too soon in my climate/gophers/dogs/kids, name it!!

My scion only had one bud per node, unfortunately that bud is now gone. This was a good learning experience and argument for why it could be beneficial to graft a 2-node piece of scion in the future if I can. Curious though if you would let more than one develop if it was you? On my Fig cuttings I scratch off all growth except from one node. There is no other growth on the persimmon rootstock as these were scion cleft grafted onto small 1yr old D. lotus rootstocks to make singular trees. I will leave it and keep an eye on it and see what happens. Likely it will shrivel, and the rootstock will sucker for me to use next year (though if it can grow well enough, I hear Persimmon can be summer grafted with great success). Here are before and after pictures.

After thinking about it overnight and reading about summer grafting success with Persimmon I ended up on Fruitwood Nursery and it was meant to be. I realized they are just about to stop shipping (website says mid-May), but by some miracle they still had Persimmon rootstock and scion. I bit the bullet and ordered 5x more rootstocks and scion.

Can you share what your average germination timeline is? I did loquat seeds a few years ago and can't find my notes. I've seen 2 wks to 3 months quoted.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Persimmons Graft Question
« on: May 12, 2022, 12:48:31 PM »
Hi group! I re-did a Persimmons graft maybe a few weeks ago and had the pot in shade on a table. The little green bud was swelling and I was watching it every day, most excitedly. Well, mysteriously the bud was picked off likely by my kids or their friend that came over. I'm pretty devastated. Unfortunately since I already re-did the graft there isn't enough rootstock left to re-graft this year and I will have to let a new sucker grow.

My question is, is there any possibility the node will push a new bud? There are no other nodes on this graft. I got a bit into reading about axillary buds and that some plants have more than one bud per node, and others are "spent" after pushing green growth. I guess I wanted to confirm this is a total fail at this point.

Thanks!

It's getting a little crazy. The prices of trees in retail settings are skyrocketing as well. I know most here trade and buy from each other, but if you need something from a big box or nursery expect those to be higher too. Took a trip to my favorite nursery for Mother's Day that is already a bit pricey and they raised the price of their 5g trees; 5g citrus went up to $65 and change. Even Home Depot Raised theirs to $40.

As for fertilizer, I'm not far enough into my Food Forest adventure to have a strict regimen or even brand loyalty. I'm hoping to really get into composting this year to help naturally build soil and invite bugs to do the garden-work. I exercise a chop and drop method of weed control, so everything goes back to the soil. Honestly, I don't even chop it all, so the dried foxtail grass left standing becomes mulch later, etc. I recycle and reuse whatever I can! Mulching is supposed to be an incredible way to build soil quickly, but I hear horror stories about using chip-drop in my area. Might be brave enough to try soon though.

Check out figbid.com. I saw some for sale today

Good looking out!

I had actually found and contacted that seller and she put up the Australian Green ad for me to get a custom order in. Looks like she got some nice sales on the rest as well. Looking forward to them.  ;D

13
Thanks for the tip! I have already checked with him on the Australian Green unfortunately, and he doesn't have any more available scion for the year.  :-\

I was able to get some loquat seeds from him though and I am sooo excited for those!!  ;D

14
Do loquats even come true from seed?

Technically no. It is a gamble, with good odds IMO towards being a good fruit as they can be similar to the parent plant. Many who have grown from seed find their fruit to be satisfactory in most cases from my research. They can be worse also, then you can graft over it. Some on the forum have found some of their seed grown trees to be superior to their named varieties.

If it helps to offer:

I don't have much to trade as my plants are primarily very young, but I have a small impressive collection of garden seeds if you are looking for an interesting tomato, squash, herb, etc. just ask! I also realized I happen to have a few Red Lebanese Bekaa Valley fig cuttings in my fridge tossed in there after a gopher decimated the roots on one of my trees. I have tested the fruit of this fig and it is true to type... and delicious.

I am interested =)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / FOUND
« on: April 27, 2022, 09:12:51 PM »
EDITED: Found Loquat seeds, & some Australian Green scion. Thanks!

Hoping to locate Australian Green Mulberry cuttings for sale (within the US only). Try me on trades, but unfortunately I have a young garden and my collection doesn't near match what so many of you have. I do have a few neat things tucked in there including a few dozen figs and multiple varieties of Prickly Pear originally from the Germplasm Repository in Parlier, CA (sourced from Fruitwood Nursery where they were named the Desert series). I also have a nice collection of garden seed (herbs/veggies/flowers).

Thanks!!

Color me devastated. I missed this AND the mulberries!! Making a note to check this forum in April. Super awesome for those who got in on it, and leaving this here on the off-chance you reopen this amazing opportunity.

I was there as well and liked R3-T1 and R6-T11.  R6-T11 is most likely El Bumpo.  I emailed Tammy asking for variety names.

I believe we talked! I was the one with the kids  ;)

Pick 3-6 are from Rudy Haluza collections. he has donated more than 20 of his private varieties to Screc throughout the years. Pic #3 is an AtemoyA I suspect African pride and the unnamed cherimoya is from his collection at his villa park property.

Thank you! How neat that there is an Atemoya as well. Is there a trick to telling when they are perfectly ripe other than checking for slight give?

22
I was there for the tour/tasting also.  R6T11 is probably El Bumpo and R3T2 is probably Ott.  Of those you are holding, the third one down is probably Lucida and the fourth one down is El Bumpo.  They didn't label the tasting table fruits so that there would not be a bias in the tasting for those varieties that are well known.  They alternate years when the fruits to taste are labelled or not.

Thank you! Hopefully they release them at a later date.

Yes, the two pictured on the tasting table were my favorite. The other pictures fruits are the ones we brought home and are not ripe/haven’t been eaten yet. I was hoping to ID those too at least.

I just realized there are three, so the 3-2, and R6-T11 were the best IMO. Those I hope someone can recognize, but I am guessing El Bumpo and Oxheart from pictures I’ve been able to find.

I set it in my box when selecting my fruit and it got closed up. I did forward a copy to Tammy, though. I tried to ask if we would be informed later. The results would be tallied I was told, but I wasn’t clear on whether they would be identified beyond their tasting numbers.
