Hi, anyone has a plant or rooted cuttings of the rose Damask 'Kazanlik' or 'Trigintipetala' available for sale? Thanks.

Two years ago, I hopped on the jabo craze and knocked on all doors asking for a mature/flowering plant (didn't have the patience for seeds/seedlings). My budget was slim because it was mostly an experiment, I didn't think I was able to grow it to fruition in my climate. However, Ryan sold me a reasonably-priced, decent-sized Escarlate and told me it could start to fruit at anytime. Now, 2 years later, I think this thing is starting to have some flower buds...so excited! A big THANK YOU to Ryan (Jaboticaba45)!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Fruits in NYC

Loquat $6.99/lb (looks to be Big Jim type); jackfruit $1.99/lb; atemoya $14/lb - fruits I can now X out of my garden and save room for other stuff. For some reason, lychee is $23/lb, I used to get them here for $2/lb. Must be some special variety...too rich for my blood.

Hi everyone, please let me know if you have fruited-wood cuttings of tasty cultivars of Riberry/Small Leafed Lilly Pilly (Szygium luehmannii) or Creek Lilly Pilly (Syzgium australe) - preferably the former. Thanks.

This thing is super lanky, but precocious...

Smell and taste not much better than raw pumpkin. Suckered again!

Granted we're all growing from different zones so I can't simply ask when is the best time to bring my potted plants out of my greenhouse. What are the signs that I should keep an eye out for? Do I need to acclimate them in anyway once they're out? Humidity reading in the greenhouse has been in the 90% range.

I have come to the realization that growing tropicals in a marginalized zone often does not leave me the option of growing the biggest or best tasting fruit varieties. I am quite happy with trees that will actually give me some fruits. I did a little bit of reading and learned certain varieties are known for being precocious and produce heavy fruit sets. I would like to compile a list of such good fruit production varieties here. Please expand on this list with your experiences and observations (I'm talking cultivars with loads heavy enough to break branches):

atemoya
• Gefner
• Lisa

sapodilla
• Tikal
• Silas Wood

lychee
• Sweetheart

loquat
???

mango
???

white sapote
???

guava
???

avocado
???

Hi everyone, anyone has a couple of pounds of properly ripened Makok and/or Silas Wood sapodilla fruits available for sale? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sapodilla
« on: March 12, 2025, 04:52:11 PM »
I recently purchased a couple of pounds of sapodilla fruits online. I made sure they were soft to the touch before eating. These things have the worst traits of persimmon, pear, and star apple - they were astringent, grainy, and made my lips stick together. Are they all like this? I was thinking of getting a tree, I'm so glad I tried the fruit before taking the plunge.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Strawberry Tree (Muntingia calabura)
« on: March 06, 2025, 10:54:27 AM »
Just bought a strawberry tree based on reviews that the little berries are delicious with a sweet and cotton candy flavor. The only downside is the size. Anyone knows of efforts made out there in trying to get bigger/better fruit? Are there any named cultivars?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit tree suggestions
« on: February 18, 2025, 02:24:52 PM »
Hi fellow growers,

I'm interested in growing tropical fruit trees that can be kept reasonably small in pots, can take a little bit of cold, and produce sweet fruits that are bigger than berry size.

Being in New York City, my backyard grow space is limited so everything has to be potted and be able to produce in containers. I have a greenhouse but with the recent surge in energy cost, I try to keep temps between 36F to 40F. And as a final requirement, the fruit has to be at least golf ball size and of sweet/good eating quality. Here's what I have came up with:
* guava
* carambola
* longan
* white sapote
* loquat
* che
* paw paw/annonas
* citrus
* mango
* persimmon
* yangmei
* garcinias - I find even Russell's Sweet can survive my environment
* jaboticaba
* avocado - Mexican types
* eugenias - I realized some produce fruits that are too small for me to care for

Please expand on this list if you have suggestions. Thanks.

Should have video documented these (feel like Joe Hewitt before he went to the big island). The citrus peel mulch did not do the trick, the Lujan jaboticaba looks pretty dead after last week's week-long single-digit temp. Luckily, I took branches and grafted them to my big in-pot Sabara (which all took). Jabos inground in New York is a no go. Lemon guava got zapped back to the ground but I know, like last year, it'll bound right back comes spring. The Changsha mandarin is looking great. This one should be doable here.

Up for the winter test next year, yangmei...maybe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shine Muscat - Blandest Grape Ever!
« on: January 27, 2025, 01:12:46 PM »
Had this grape before, it was alright in the first day I bought it; however, its flavor diminishes exponentially by the day. This second batch I bought tasted worst than the worst grape I have ever eaten.

  • Luc's Mexican garcinia
  • Russell's sweet garcinia

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bellamy Seedling ID Help
« on: December 29, 2024, 10:53:09 AM »
Bought some seeds from Bellamy over the summer. Planted them in small pots, didn't pay much attention to them until just now. Looks like a batch has sprouted, but I was too lazy to note the plant's name on the cup, simply taped the label that came with the seeds to the container. Unfortunate, it's all faded. Can anyone tell what this is?

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased the Inkbird ITC-608T Temperature Controller to maintain temperature in my KingBird greenhouse for the incoming winter. The instructions that came with the manual is appalling. I don't want to risk setting things up incorrectly and end up freezing all of my plants.

Has anyone of you used this device and know how to properly set it up? Please provide step-by-step input instructions if you could for the following desired temperature: I would like to have my milkhouse heater turn on automatically when temp dips below 42F. Once temp reaches 45F, the heater should turn off. On the cooling side, I also have a Hurricane fan plugged into the temperature controller. When temp reaches 105F, the fan should turn on and turn back off when it drops back down to 100F.

Thanks so much for any advice given!
