Citrus General Discussion / Re: New Zealand Lemonade polyembryonic?
« on: December 02, 2022, 11:22:25 AM »
I've heard it may have Meyer lemon in its parentage, which, of course, is not polyembryonic.  So there's that.

It is US-852 - Citrandarin. The original plant was purchased from Stan McKenzie. I do not know whether it was a seedling or a rooted cutting.

My Xie Shan in a container in northern VA. Not many fruits, but they are large with pebbly rind.  Haven't tried one yet.  It bloomed a bit more over the summer and has some quarter-sized fruit developing as well.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Satsuma flowering

Following few techniques and cultural practices I managed to induce a massive flowering this year on my small satsuma 'Okitsu' mandarin. I hope I will stop the fruit drop and have a  mandarin for every 4 leaves.

Why don't you share your techniques here? I'd be really curious.

My favorite grafts lately have been veneers. For some reason they just seem to take and grow quickly.  And I can slowly cut back the upper portion of the root stock.

Tomek, saw what you are growing. All the best!  You might try watering with collected rain water. Sometimes I think our water is just too loaded with chemicals, but who knows?  I can't for the life of me keep lychees and longans growing well. Always the leaves turn brown on tips and fall off. They do better outdoors over summer, then decline over winter. Wondering if it's the water.

Anyway, I'm nearby in Fairfax, VA

I think all the Record Buck Farms citrus are rooted. Nothing wrong with that if you are just growing them in a container and not in the ground.

What is the humidity level of your cuttings?  It may be too low.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangos from cuttings?

I was able to root a mango cutting this last summer. BUT, it was only an experiment and I used a cutting of a seedling mango that was only about 2 year old. It could be that juvenile growth is easier to root than mature, bearing-age growth. I don't know. I'll try to add pics. If they show up, the first pic is two to three weeks after sticking in the prop box. The second pic is about 8 or 9 weeks as it is getting its first flush.  This was an Ataulfo seedling plant.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Store-bought mangos - Late August
« on: August 31, 2019, 04:21:32 PM »
It is now late August and I purchased a couple different mangoes at the local Asian supermarket. Wondering if you all could identify? They didn't have any real variety names on the labels.

The so-called 'Haitian' I'm thinking is a 'Madame Francique', since that is typically Haiti's only mango export... as far as I know... and the shape looks right. But usually they only ship in early summer. Or is this something different? It was pretty bad ... exceedingly stringy and not much taste.

The so-called 'Green' mango (from Mexico)? Is that just a Keitt? This one is probably over-ripe. But it was solid green when I got it. they sold by the pound and some where huge. Not terrible in taste or texture.

And lastly, I've never heard of an 'Apple' mango, which is what this was marked as. It's from Mexico also. Is it just a Kent? Or is there a separate variety called 'Apple'? Flavor was OK. Seemed similar to a Kent.

Why did you grow Turpentine as rootstock?  Wouldn't any good vigorous mango seedling work?

#1 Mango
#2 a good Dekopon citrus fruit / tie with a Sky Valley navel orange
#3 a perfectly ripened yellow free-stone peach
#4 Lychee / Longan / Rambutan  -- a three-way tie for #4
#5 Apple
