East Kalimantan - Balikpapan Experience or advice?

Will be flying in to East Kalimantan - Balikpapan in the future and would like to ask if there's anyone with advice for finding Durian or other rare fruit around the area or the greater part of East Kalimantan.
Or areas that are one- two days away by buss.

I know All the fruit found Durio grandiflorus there.

It seams possible to take ferry from Tarakan to Sabah but would have to cross the Border to Malaysia then.

Or would it be good to spend most time in N Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, S or West Kalimantan?
It depends on the season but also would be good to know botanical gardens or good markets.

you should go see if lonely planet has their thorn tree forum still up and running. if they do, you can select by country and start a thread there with all your questions.  in addition to other travelers being active on that forum, there are many local guides/translators etc that hang out on that site.  you can possibly get good references for translator guides to help you search.  OR you contact lindsay gasik. she does some custom trip itinerary type stuff if you don't want to go on her tours.

Was mainly asking for advice from forum members as there is so much knowledgeable people here.
If the info is put in the public then new members can see the advice for free so that they will be able to plan their Kalimantan trips better. Without costly tour guides or consultations.

Instagram is really good for knowing when the Durian season is 'on' in different areas because there is usually durian sales post there from Indonesian growers but I am not really looking for Zibethinus, trying to find individual trees of Durio sp. preferably in the bush as the seed will less likely be a zibethinus hybrid.

January does not seam to be a good month for Durio in Kalimantan, only some high altitude areas where the season is different due to the climate high up there. According to All the fruits videos.

To find local markets search "pasar" + "name of local area/town", Pasar is market.

Doing this worked really well for Bali last time we here there.
Going really early or at night is advisable.
Remember there are "wet" and "dry" markets and fruit is found at wet markets.
Most markets are hybrids.

I'd look at Instagram tags and see if that pulls up any pictures and maybe connect with the owners and figure out when and where they acquired and go from there?  Too bad the thorntree was taken down, woudl've been good to find translators there.

You are only going based off all the fruits videos this season? It wasn’t a good year for durian this season apparently. Look at his previous videos where he’s eating kutenjensis and hybrids. December and January usually are the main seasons on Borneo, starting November in Sabah. There are sometimes smaller seasons in the middle of the year or other times. Based off videos I’ve seen of fruits in Kalimantan, there may be a better variety of jungle fruits compared to the Malaysian side as I never even came across willughbeia species on the Malaysian side, although I know they exist in some of the jungles. I’m not that adventurous. stick to roadside stands and markets. On the Malaysian side, you will find different species of durio too. It’s worth going to Sarawak to experience eating dabai alone.

He has so many videos and travels to a lot of different places and I think recently he renamed a bunch of them because some people don't like the name "Borneo" so it's made it harder to search his videos. Also some videos where deleted.

The one from John Glue from Rare Fruit Australia archives are accurate IMO since Always when I have been to Thailand the season have been around May- July and in Bali it's been great in Feb.
And it states Dec-Jan for Kalimantan which coincides with the info given by Ben.

So now it's quite easy to plan a road trip through Kalimantan.

That's a good source too. They did well on putting that together.

But FNQ Peak durian season is usually in February not march, her and Rob judged it to much on the Tully area season and not Mossman, Cape trip or Cooktown season. This year there where good Cooktown durians in Nov, so Dec or Jan is more like peak season there.
And around Cape trip it's Peak Feb.

There's also Julatten at 500m with peak season months later with last durian falling usually in June. In Julatten there is a heavy biannual bearing pattern.
