I have a 8 year old inground Dekopon tree grafted on C35 and it is only 6 feet tall.   C35  rootstock is a cross of Ruby orange X Webber Fawcett trifoliate orange.

There are some advantages obtained by utilizing various  rootstocks.  However, especially lemons on their own rootstock is absolutely fine.

The larger the tree the better it is able to protect it self. However, the smaller the tree the easier it is to give the tree protection against an unusual harsh cold spell.   If it was me I would give it a try.  However, have protection ready.  See if you can still find the larger old fashion Christmas lights.  They put out a lot of heat.  This planting would make a excellent long term educational topic for this forum, as you print your growing challenges and successes.  The best to you and your trees.

I wish you and your trees all the luck.  In zone 8b you have a good chance unless there is one of those terrible extra bad cold fronts

I bought it on line.  However, I'm sure there must be some dealer in Denver.

The trifoliate leaves & branches are from the rootstock.    However, you can cut out the trifoliate branches and retain the monfoliate branches from the original tree.  Then top work

Peep, if the soil is well draining then a large container should not be a problem with proper watering.

I used to have a Prague grafted on FD.   It was planted in the ground., I got it from Laszz   It fruited very well.  The only problem is that the fruit is terrible.  After  a couple years Ii finally removed the tree and planted a red grapefruit that I purchased from Hershell (Madison Nursery).

Ilya111 sounds interesting   I have never heard of that variety.  Today there are so many citrus hybrids it is hard to keep up with them..

I have two Shikuwasa trees. The leaves shown in Peep's pictures don't  look like the leaves on my trees.

When grown in zone 7 and below they will need some  protection from cold events.

I had an inground Bizzsrria tree which I got from Lazz.  I had it for a couple yeas, but finally got tired of caring for it, especially as the fruit was not of eating quality. I replaced it with a Red Grapefruit.

I think Rob From Sidney gave you the best possible advice. The leaves do look like mandarin leaves.

Actually, you would have been better off not putting the two inches of gravel in the bottom of the container, as doing so just raises the perched water table 2 inches higher in the container.

Citrus General Discussion / Grasshoppers
« on: August 25, 2024, 02:29:18 PM »
This summer the grasshoppers have been terrible here in Colorado.  They must be getting into the greenhouse through the exhaust vents.  They have been eating on the levees.  I kill them as I ketch them.  This year is the worst infestation I have ever seen.

At those winter temperatures your citrus should do very well.  I do not foresee a problem.

I am not so sure that your Meyer lemon is a grafted tree.  It could be, but the vast amount of Meyer lemon trees today are rooted cuttings.

Welcome to the forum.  We are happy to have you as a member. There is a difference for fertilizing a plant that is growing in a container , and one growing in the ground. Plants growing in the ground do fairly well  when using organic fertilizers.  That is because the soil has plenty micro organism to break  down organic fertilizers into usable elements that the roots can use and absorb.  However. in container culture this is not so, because there is not enough organism to break your fertilizer elements into usable elements that the tree can absorb..  Your container trees will do much better using a commercial fertilizer.   Your previous growing method is much of the reason that some of your seedlings died.  I wish you and your tree well.   For kumquats, varieties, only Nagami  does not come true.

Some bag mixes work well enough (Miracle Grown Garden Soil) for a while, but often after a year problems began. In my opinion the 5-1-1 medium so far has shown the best long term results.

At  the present stage of growth I would leave the tree alone.

« on: July 22, 2024, 01:30:13 PM »
The symptoms of a nitrogen deficiency in citrus are yellow/orange veins with  some green out on the far sides of the leaf. Organic fertilizers do OK when used in the soil, but not so well in container culture.  This is because container soil does not have enough organisms to break down the organic fertilizer into a form for the tree to use.
