Tropical Fruit Discussion / Little Seedling Mango Flowering
« on: November 02, 2025, 09:56:57 AM »
I planted out some rootstocks and one of them is flowering. The interesting thing is that it is 3 months old and barely 6 inches tall. Will plant it out as see how it behaves moving forward

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Illama Taste
« on: September 01, 2025, 06:41:52 PM »
So I just found this Illama on the floor. I was excited since it is the first tasting. It cracked and fell from the tree. It did rain around 2 days ago. Anyways...it was dry and bland with some faint taste similar to sugarapple. My question is will it always be dry and flavorless? The arils near the cracks was moist but barely any flavor and faint sweetness. I am growing a few seedlings so I'm not sure if i should plant them after this fruit.

That is cattle melon. Leaves are similar to that of canteloupe. kinda spiny. Not toxic but not worth growing as a prior post indicated.

I ended up buying 2 around a year ago from Julian. they were freshly grafted and both died. Been trying to add it again. Seems pre-orders are delayed. I guess there isn't enough rootstock or maybe the variety is in high demand and he cant keep up with preorders.

I think Owais is the same as Ewais in Florida. Hendi might be Hindi Besennara. Tropical Acres farm has budwood in August.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question on Guimara Mango

Anyone in Florida growing this mango? I know they have selected variations like the Sweet Elena and the LL07. Anyone tasted these?

Thanks to you we have the seedless krueger in Belize now. Im guessing a member got it and brought scions here to graft. When I was there a month ago they were selling grafted trees. They only had 2 available. I snagged 1.

Anyone has tubers for sale. Trying to grow it.

With Mamey. They grow roots and dont push green till 4 months later. Happen to me a few times. Usually the green is weak too. Take it out of the coir to check maybe it rotted? I'd probably mix that coco coir with other stuff. I personally just plant my seeds in a container with native soil maybe a bit of peat moss if Im feeling fancy. If my seeds cant handle my local soil then they dont deserve to live here(maybe that's why I dont have a single jabo tree)

Just be patient if the roots are alright. It will push...eventually or die.

We could just ask palologrower to ask the owner of the variegated fruit dwarf Samoan coconut...on how it tastes? I'm sure he will let him sample a fruit.
Eliminates all the guessing.

Well i dont mind giving it a try. I got property in warmer areas and i haven't added a samoan coconut as yet only maypan, Malaysian dwarf and Brazillian dwarf so either way its ok if it never produces variegated nuts.

As long as the nut dropped from the tree naturally once dry and had water swooshing inside when shaken it should germinate. Definitely interested by the way. How much would a seed nut go for?

in my farm in Belize, I recently planted a few Illama trees i got from a local nursery. They are all on Custard Apple/ Annona reticulata rootstock. Illama doesnt naturally grow there and they tend to get a spotty leaf and defoliate after reaching 6 months of age though a couple trees have reached maturity in he country( around 3 that I've seen or heard of).

My question is if there really a delayed incompatibility with the reticulata rootstock like others have mentioned? Forum member Bsbullie mentioned that there is a delay incompatibility and they rarely flower and hold fruit to maturity. I have one tree here in Belize that is 6ft tall and equally as wide that has produced 2 fruit but they fell. Im not sure if they were ripe though there were little seedlings 6 months later around the tree so the seeds were mature.
Another species that i have gotten grafted onto reticulata is Rollinia. It does well on its own roots but some soils like mine aren't the most suitable.

Anyone knows about the long term compatibility of these two combos? Any info besides the old thread from back in the day in the forum?

Not my area is too dry for pond apple and annona montana rootstock tends to be super slow growing here.

Have you checked with Alex?

Not sure if he is selling scions of this but he is selling scions now and is a reliable source.

He has too many 1gal tree requests of p22 so he didnt make it available this month. Im thinking of taking my chances and just getting a zill-80 .
