Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ideas on what to plant in this spot?
« on: October 01, 2024, 02:59:21 PM »
Hey all! I've just removed some boring shrubs from the side of my lanai and suddenly have  a 2.5ft x 10ft area to shove some more interesting things into. Get's plenty hot and tons of sun throughout the day. Still a WIP but this is what I'm working with (postimg seems to be having issues if it doesn't show):

I think an obvious choice would be some Red Jabo's but I already have several around the yard and want to change it up a bit.  I'm wanting to throw something in that won't grow too fast and will be able to tolerate a pruning so that it doesn't push into the screen or the path, so I'm thinking some other Myrtaceae's would fit the bill... but since some of the varieties I have collected are still on the smaller side and I am not familiar with their growth habits I was wondering if I could get a good recommendation from the ones I currently have.

Currently in 1 gallonish+ sizes:

Jabos:
Campo Ramon
Coronata Restinga
Branca Vinho

And non-jabos:
Rainforest Plum
Myrciaria Floribunda

I do have some other Jabos that I can wait on until they get a bit bigger later next year, but those include:

Phitrantha Red Crystal
Ruby Honey
Otto Anderson Acu-Canaa

And some larger plants that I think might need a different spot with more room... unless I'm just crazy:

Plinia Oblongata
Trunciflora Gigante

Citrus General Discussion / Eremocitrus and other Australian Citrus in FL
« on: September 02, 2024, 04:37:24 PM »
I've been successfully growing finger limes for a bit and just recently found out about the other amazing Australian species. Is anyone growing the Desert Lime or Round Lime or any hybrids in FL? I've been looking around and can't seem to find any FL sources.

Hey All! I planted out a mango seedling from some turpentine mangoes I managed to get my hands on. Been growing them out for about a year now but I put the healthiest looking one in the ground maybe about a month ago. My idea was to let it establish a healthy root system in the ground before grafting to it since I wasn't sure which varieties I wanted just yet.  The idea is to eventually do a multi-grafted tree since I only have so much space in my yard.  After tasting some different mangoes at the mango festival on Pine Island this last weekend I think I'm going to try my hand at adding sweet tart first. Anyhow... My first thought would be to not overthink it and just go ahead and lop off the top and do a cleft onto the main trunk. But then I had another thought to maybe let it grow up a but more, tip it and then graft multiple scions to any new branches that pop out.

What are y'alls thoughts on this?  Here's some pics of the seedling for reference:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help ID'ing, Flacourtia ???
« on: May 22, 2024, 06:10:16 PM »
Hey all, I've got a couple plants that I grew from seed.  I was at the fruit and spice park in 2022 and was fortunate to get to try several fruits and I planted all the seeds out. This one in particular was from a bushy plant that had a bunch of darker colored round fruit that had fallen on the ground.  I wish I had taken pictures of it back then but all I have as evidence are the plants that popped up! I remember them being likely very overripe as they had a very strong brown sugar flavor.  I suspect it to be some species of Flacourtia, potentially Governors Plum or Coffee plum.  Anyways, here are some pics!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Pitangatuba
« on: May 07, 2024, 05:42:20 PM »
I just had my first Pitangatuba today off of my plant I got as a little bitty seedling a few years ago. I was inspecting the fruit and it just fell into my hand, it looks like it could have ripened up more so I'm expecting this first experience to be mediocre compared to a more mature plant.

Overall this specific fruit tasted OK - hints of mango, peach, passion fruit and other components I can't quite put my finger on... maybe a bit like surinam cherry but without the funk. Did seem to have a bit of latex and has left a light lingering chemical flavor. The smell was interesting too, kinda like tropical fruit and popcorn!? Does anyone else get the popcorn smell or am I just crazy?

Definitely would prefer a bowl of Jaboticaba over Pitangatuba  ;D

I just cut down my yellow dragon fruit today.  Got too big for me to want to continue growing this one in my lanai.  If anyone wants the cuttings and are in the Tampa area feel free to come by and pick'em up (and bring gloves  :o):

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB - Grafted Imbe
« on: February 16, 2024, 01:02:12 PM »
I've got a couple plants in ground but I have no idea what gender they are yet.  Tried grafting some Hermaphrodite scions onto them last year but some worms got hungry :(

If anyone has some grafted hermaphrodite plants (or known male/female) I'd be interested.  Thanks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Zone 9b/10a Driveway Hedge
« on: February 07, 2024, 05:46:50 PM »
Hey All! I've searched up some discussion on the forum about hedge rows and what could be done but I haven't seen too examples of what people have actually done. I'm working on expanding my HOA friendly food forest to the front yard. I'm lucky as they are quite lax where I'm at - basic rule is keep it clean looking where visible from the street but we don't have any restrictions on what kinds of plants we can grow.  I'm thinking about planting out some short evergreen hedges along the driveway and the first thing that comes to mind is Natal Plum. If anyone has any additional ideas please share! Or if you've done anything similar I'd love to see what you've got!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Loaded 9b Mangos
« on: March 20, 2023, 02:39:41 PM »
Just posting one my neighborhood's mangoes taking off. I don't think it or any of the other mangoes were phased at all by the Christmas freeze and it really kicked off some serious blooms!  I'm guessing it's at least 8 years old as I've been in the neighborhood for about 3 and it's been about this size since I've been here. Not sure of the variety:

Little bitty fruits forming!
