Tropical Fruit Discussion / Less astringent guavaberry?
« on: October 23, 2024, 09:16:03 AM »
I had guavaberry at the fruit and spice park yesterday. I loved it, it’s like a sweeter and more fleshy jamun. My only problem with it is how astringent it is, especially the skin. Does anyone know if there’s any less astringent cultivars available?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cats love durian?!!
« on: October 17, 2024, 10:42:23 PM »
After finishing my durian the cats came up to me sniffing all over my face and mouth. I gave them the seeds and my durian covered bowl and they left the bowl spotless. Who’d have thought? These cats like mango, soursop, sugar apple, and now durian

My “prolific” cultivar grafted rollinia tree snapped in half so I cut most of it off to try and save what I can. I’d hate to see the cuttings lose their viability so if anyone is willing to graft them onto their trees I’ll give them free of charge with just the expectation that I’ll get some back once the grafts grow in. It’s been flowering prolifically for a year straight and has set multiple very sweet and tasty fruit

This morning I found my rollinia snapped in half, covered in flowers and fruit  :'( I really want to save the genetics and I don’t have any rootstocks to do so. I’ve also never even grafted a tree before so I’m looking for all any advice on what to do. Thanks guys

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherry of the rio grande issues
« on: September 22, 2024, 02:54:16 PM »
My cherry of the rio grande had been doing amazing in the same spot, with the same amount of water. Recently I noticed it’s started yellowing and dying back. I fertilized and it hasn’t gotten any better I don’t think. Any advice? I’ve read they’re very finicky trees and can just randomly die but I got the seeds from Kevin jones so I’m hoping it’s not faulty genetics. Although one of the other seedlings did die.

I just landed in phoenix and I’m gonna be in AZ for 4 days. I wanna try new fruits and foods and potentially bring home some cacti pads of good fruiting cultivars. I’ve seen a few natives on this forum, any tips?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / South Florida persimmons
« on: July 29, 2024, 11:14:15 PM »
Im looking for a persimmon tree that will do well in south fl. Would be happy with a winterset or “south Florida” variety. I saw tons of talk about them and sales a few years ago but it seems like they’ve just completely disappeared. Lara used to sell them but I don’t see them anymore. AFAIK no one does. Any info on how different varieties do down here is also helpful

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting out Ilama in South FL
« on: July 18, 2024, 04:23:36 AM »
Im looking for any and all advice on growing/ planting Ilama in FL. I bought two seedling Ilama trees, one red, one white. Planning on planting them out; they’re very healthy in 3 gallon pots. I read they don’t like limestone, need dry summers and wet winters, and a local nursery guy told me he couldn’t get them to fruit. I’m right on the border of the Everglades, planting in holes dug out of pure rock. The land never floods, but the water table is consistently very high. I have some high quality dirt and topsoil I can use to fill in along with the rock. Also curious about whether I’ll need cold protection, I’m a bit south of Kendall but very far west.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ilama pollination
« on: July 03, 2024, 03:06:05 PM »
Do you guys think ilama can cross pollinate with other annona fruits? Seeing as Squamosa and reticulata readily cross with each other as well as cherimola I’m curious to see if ilama is too distant to cross as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit and spice white sapote

Need a cinnamon apple tree, the bigger the better!

Im looking to buy two coconut trees. Any advice on the best varieties? I’ve heard malayan dwarf and Fiji dwarf are good. Is there any way to source macapuno coconut trees in Florida?  I’m interested in a smaller tree that has strong and rich coconut flavored water. I’m tired of buying coconuts that barely taste like coconut. Preferably good for flesh as well. Any advice on who to buy them from is also appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peaches in south FL (low chill)
« on: May 17, 2024, 11:00:26 AM »
I’m looking to buy a peach tree to plant in the Kendall area. Is it even realistic to get great peaches this far south? I saw a peach tree at fruit and spice with a few fruits on it so it seems possible to fruit them. Any recommendations on varieties? I looked it up and homestead supposedly only got 5 chill hours this year. How is it possible for any peach to have fruited? Maybe 45 degrees isnt the minimum for chill?

A few have turned black and fallen off. Is there any way to treat/ prevent this?

I know this isn’t exactly a tropical fruit but since most of us are in south FL I figured I might get some good help here. Every year I’ve tried to plant tomatoes (with the sole exception of Everglades) the plants get this strange disease and die shortly after. It always starts with the stems losing their “hairs” and going bald. They also completely lose their fragrance. They start to bronze a bit followed by leaf and branch death going from the bottom up. There is no visible bugs although a few years ago I microscoped what looked like russet mites. My next step is bombing with systemic to see if it is russet mites causing this. The plants usually outgrow the damage until they finally don’t and they perish.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Thinning rollinia fruits
« on: April 02, 2024, 03:29:28 PM »
I have a small “prolific” rollinia tree in a 25 gallon pot. It’s absolutely loaded with fruits because of our hand pollination and I’m worried having too many fruits will hurt the plant and/or lower quality of the fruit. Which fruits would you guys suggest thinning? I don’t care about fruit size if anything I’d prefer more smaller fruit than fewer larger fruit so long as the flavor isn’t affected. This is my first year with the tree and after hand pollinating so many it hurts me to take any off

Does anyone have any high quality cultivars of eggfruit already producing? I am interested in buying a large tree

22
My family wants already producing and large trees of avocado mango and lychee. I want quality cultivars and quality shaped trees. Does anyone know where I could find something somewhere in the middle or the best of both worlds? Anywhere within an hour of Hialeah would work for me. I already know the good cultivars of mango and lychee but I’m wondering what good south Florida varieties exist for avocado. All the ones I’ve tasted have been bland or watery or both

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Petai beans

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit trees for 25 gal pots long term
« on: March 06, 2024, 06:42:18 PM »
I have exactly one more space in my patio for a 25 gal fruit tree. What trees (besides guavas and jabos) would be happy and productive in a pot that size long term? Would sapodilla work or does it grow too big?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with annona seedlings

Annona hayesii seedlings recently sprouted and they dropped a couple leaves and are looking really rough. Any idea what’s wrong or how to save them?
