Do you know any fruits that are native to Hawaii?
« on: February 24, 2024, 07:24:45 AM »
In Hawaii, many fruits grow, but most of them have been brought in from overseas. So, what are the fruits that have been in Hawaii since ancient times?
I need your help.

Sorry for the typo. It should have been Akaka or Hawiian Raspberry (Rubus hawaiensis). Ohelo is Hawaii's version of the blueberry.

Guavas and Passion Fruit

Both native to South America. Guava is invasive in Hawaii

How does Hawaiian raspberry taste? I bet it's heat tolerant

The only indigenous Hawaiian land mammal is a bat, so plants here didn't evolve to yield much food for humans. Besides the Vaccinium and Rubus mentioned above, I've been curious to try lama (Diospyros hillebrandii), a persimmon relative. My notes read "Sweet but scant fruit pulp.  Maybe fun to select for more pulp?"

Mamaki (Pipturus albidus) has edible inoffensive fruit, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat it.

I’ve tried it. The amount of edible flesh is almost nothing. Also astringent

Tropical Almond (Terminalia Catappa), could be considered native to Hawaii, since it got there by floating on the ocean currents. Not exactly a fruit but edible.

Lama aka Diospyros sandwicensis

small fruit and mostly seed but doesn't taste too bad when I had it.
