Catalina avocado - weird shaped fruit
« on: July 26, 2025, 11:58:03 AM »
My Catalina tree finally flowered and set fruit. However, the fruit look weird. They have the form of cashews or a squash. Longish looking. Can anyone confirm this is how the fruit are supposed to look? Maybe this is a sub variety of Catalina. Will the fruit fill in later while growing? I'm not sure what to think.

Wow, haven't seen that kind of shape on my Catalina. I just posted a photo of typical one I got at this other thread:

Could they be seedless fruit?

They're not looking good at all, and not looking like Catalina.

Yeah, they look like cocktail (fancy word for seedless ones) avos.

Is Catalina your only avocado tree, or if you have others was it the first one to flower? I'm pretty sure that seedless fruits are cause by a pollination issue.

I'm not sure what a cocktail avocado is, but this is not what I ordered from the nursery in West Palm Beach (wellington).

I have two more avocado trees, Dupuis (which flowered in March and set fruit but I fertilized and it dropped them all), and Oro Negro which has not yet flowered at all for the 3 years its been in the ground.  This Catalina tree flowered in May, way later than expected and now this is what Im seeing for fruit.

You need to take that tree back to the nursery and have them replace it.  Was it from Jack Beanstalk?  They sold me a mislabeled banana plant a few years back.

Now I am concerned that the Oro Negro will never bear fruit as it hasn't flowered yet. And I can not possibly return the tree as it is in the ground and has been for two years + now. The person who sold me the tree told me to take off the fruit it set the first year, which I did. I had no idea the fruit would turn out like this, and heeding their advice means this tree is in the ground, well established now.  >:(

I guess I will wait to see how the fruit taste? And if it tastes OK to great I will keep it. Otherwise I will probably order a Catalina tree from Tropical Acres Farm and remove this tree from my yard. Their Dupuis grafted tree took quickly and the fruit looks like expected.

I've seen an ON go many years without flowering.  It's not a very reliable avocado.  I got rid of the tree I had.

I purchased a few long neck type avocados, also the Russell from Lara Farms. My small trees are too smal for fruits, will take a few years to find out if it is the correct variety of long neck I was hoping for.

I found this image of a Russell plant and the tree I have doesn't flush in this color, and the fruit would be full size by now, according to the seasonal listing.

Cocktail avocados are not a variety. It’s a name for small seedless avocado fruit. These fruit result from non pollinated flowers via parthenocarpy.

Well I can confirm that the avocado produced does not seem to have a seed inside.

I wouldn't remove it, if it is a flop then you should try top working. If you don't know what it is, basically it means re-grafting the tree. You can graft a scion from another variety onto every branch of the tree or stump the tree and graft the shoots that come up. Commercial orchards use the technique to change the variety of avo they are growing without losing established trees. If you want you turn a bad variety of avocado into 5 good ones by using scions from different varieties  ;D

Your fruit that is cut in half is a cuke (seedless fruit), but why did you pick it off so soon. It also looks similar to that long neck catalina fruit. If it is the long neck then that's a keeper, more flesh to eat.

I have most of the long neck avocados grafted but none have had fruits yet. I hope next year.

I picked it off so quickly because I was concerned about the fruit's shape. I have nothing but these types of fruits on my tree. Not one avocado is normal. I wonder if this is just a seasonal thing due to the lack of water OR will this be a habitual occurrence? I want regular-sized avocados so I'm a bit let down by this. I will rip out the tree or try to top work it if it happens again next year. Other trees in my neighborhood had fruit just fine.

Before you cut down the tree, or get rid of it, you might have something special there. The fruit may not be exactly what you expected, but to most people, the seedless avocado is probably a lot more interesting and exciting.

I wonder if it could even be a Catalina that is producing seedless avocados? I don't know enough to say, but get some more input before you decide what to do.

I don't know. These fruits are finger-sized and maybe two fingers thick in width.  They have been slowly growing since they set, but they set so late.
