Where to find Cardamom Seeds?
« on: August 21, 2022, 09:40:11 AM »
Just wanted to see if anyone has a place I could try to get viable Green or Black Cardamom seeds.  So far most of the links here are 3-5 years old and most will not ship to the US anyway.  Any place I have seen on line seems to get really bad reviews.  I have not had any luck germinating seeds that I get in the store which makes me think they are old, sterilized or heated.

I've had good luck with Trade Winds Fruit. Never tried their cardamom seeds, but it looks like they have a couple black varieties in stock.

Cardamom plants are in the Zingiberaceae family and can be more easily propagated through rhizomes.
Any reason you are trying from seed?

They're trying from seed because real cardamom rhizomes are nearly impossible to find in the US. I'm working on getting the real plants -- I'll have some baby ones for sale in about 5 weeks, and in about 6 months I'll have more mature plants. (Importing those from Kerala, India)

Wizard, got any photos of your plants?
I always see Alpinia nutans sold as real cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), would be nice to get the real thing.

I have the baby plants available right now. I made a formal post, but you can DM me if you'd like too.

Craig in Sebring, FL should have real cardamom rhizomes available. His business name is "Just Ginger". I'm sure you could find contact info online. Also possible that Andy Firk of "Bamboo Garden Groves" may have it as well. Worth asking at least.

Unfortunately, Craig passed away. Andy appears to still be here and not in Wales, but getting ahold of him has been tough for me. In any case, I have the real deal, so I'm not looking any longer. :)

Do you know what happened to Craig? He was a personal friend of mine but hadn't seen him in person for a few years. When I moved to the panhandle around 6 years ago I quit seeing him regularly. Only once since we moved. Damn that really sucks to hear.
