Dimicelli - What is it?
« on: April 30, 2025, 02:06:52 PM »
I read about Dimicelli many years ago, and always assumed that it was a 50-50 Trifoliate x Clementine hybrid developed by Dr. John Brown. In other words, a CiClem. I got CiClem #10 years ago and it is a very vigorous, trifoliate-leaved hybrid that produces an oblong, yellow fruit that is pretty good for a trifoliate hybrid, but unmistakably still a 50-50 hybrid.

Earlier this year, Virginia Fruit Grower send me some Dimicelli fruit to try (and grow from seed). I was really surprised when I saw and tasted the fruit. They looked and tasted like a decent Clementine - maybe a little sour for a Clementine, but close enough if hardy.

So - is Dimicelli really a CiClem, or is it a complex hybrid, perhaps back-crossed with Clementine or something else?

I have a plant (no fruits yet) and would also not think that it's half poncirus. I'd say it's very unlikely for a 1/2 hybrid to result in something monofoliate without any 'thumbs' or other weird quirks.

It's suggested to be 1/4 Poncirus, 1/4 Temple, 1/2 Clementine on this blog here https://hardycitrus.blogspot.com/2013/11/dimicelli.html

In my free time, I try to save information about citruses in the form of a website. Here is a page with Dimicelli.

I also doubt 50% Trifoliate due to leaf shape.
Mine currently forms out first flower buds, I' m really curious
to fruit taste. From first clemyuz 22 fruits I was not 100% convinced
of fruit taste, had a slight aftertaste.
Hope Dimicelli is better.

CiTemple x Clementine makes a lot more sense. Here are some seedlings I germinated from the fruit Gaylord sent me.

I was very pleasantly impressed with the taste and would rank Dimicelli higher than CY 2-2.

First fruit is often not too good. It may improve a lot in next years.

I can attest for its hardness. No damage at 12F and has excellent dormancy. Grafted  on 942
