After half a day of work ( thogh this is relaxing for me and i dont consider it work) i colected all these roots and logs from the river bed.
This should be enough to heat my greenhouse for a whole winter .Its  more than a cubic meter and a half of wood.

After i look better on one of the roots,i discover it has truffles on it.
These are symbiotic fungi that help the trees to colect water and nutrients in exchange for sugars (sugar is a premium  carbon source, the web on wich all life forms are built).
Truffles are the most expensive food on Earth and they are a mycorrhizae fungi.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / The original cantaloupe
« on: August 06, 2020, 05:14:03 PM »
The name cantaloupe is used for orange fleshed muskmelons nowadays but i will show you the real deal, the original european cantaloupe wich i think its far superior to any yellow type mellon.
The original cantaloupes are orange mellons with stripes and no netting on them( they have smooth skin).
The texture its soft and ,,powdery,, like ice cream, the smell and taste are far superior than any otther muskmelons varietyes.
Its a totally different fruit than the regular muskmelons with netting on them or without stripes.
I have a friend that grows only cantaloupes as a business and sells them .Been doing this all his life and i think he got the best, the epitome of cantaloupes .
He doesnt grow yellow mellons with netting on them so that they wont hibridise his cantaloupes.
I googled immages of cantaloupes and aparently there are no pictures on Google for this famous fruit. All the pictures are of hibrids that have netting on their skin.
The closest cantaloupe looking mellon pictures i could find ,was the Tuscany cantaloupe but it has netting and its not a real, original cantaloupe with smooth skin.
Real cantaloupes are hard to find even here and they become harder and harder to find by each year ,but i wasnt expecting not to find a picture with google of this.
From this i realised that real cantaloupes must be rare.
Il show you what i mean when il post pictures with it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Too much fruit harms society ?
« on: June 27, 2020, 10:30:48 PM »
Moldova,a small country in eastern Europe is known for making high quality vine .They are like number 3 or 4 in the world at best wine making but considering the small size of the country compared to Australia for instance ,you get the idea they are experts.
Unfortunatedly ,this country,Moldova, also has the biggest problem with alcohol consumption in the world and one of 4 deaths are atributed to alcohol.
They grow a lot of fruits and make alcohol from them.
This i see it as a negative side of too much fruit growing and the reason i decided my main crop to be not fruits but nuts ,so that my family, kids, nephews and future generations, can not make alcohool from them.
In a way ,i think Moldova would have been better if they were becoming muslims since muslims dont drink that much and is one of the things i like at them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chicken wire protecting tree seedlings
« on: June 25, 2020, 11:55:23 PM »
Just bought 5 spools of this thin metal wire net to cut it into small pieces and bend it into tubular shape for each seedling tree i have in the fields.
Here we call it ,,rabitz,, net but i couldnt find the naming for this in english language. For sure it is common and cheap ,found everywhere.
I hope it offers good protection against deer and rabbits while the trees are young.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / East USA flora related to China flora
« on: June 21, 2020, 01:58:35 PM »
Since long time i wanted to post this.
I find it amazing that east USA flora and even somme of the fauna( ex: american paddlefish- chinese paddlefish) are soo distant iet related like twins.
Magnolia,Asimina Triloba( annonaceae),the tulip tree ,hickory trees, walnuts ,ginseng and manny otthers are found in east USA and also China.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Drones that plant seeds
« on: June 19, 2020, 04:16:52 AM »
Found this video of an open source program to help people across the globe to build cheap and efficient drones to plant seeds and fight deforestation.
I like this project and altough initially i wanted to build a drone just to chase goats from my orchard, now im thinking to build a bigger one ( not too big thogh, half the size of the one from the video) and use it for seed planting also.
Now when all the drone regulations started i can still find cheap parts to build it.
Due to the regulations they became illegal to fly and, cheap prices of the drones are a result of this .

Its funny but tomorrow il not feel funny about it when il have to move the trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yeast as fertiliser
« on: May 26, 2020, 07:43:06 PM »
Anybody have experience with regular brewers yeast ( thats also used for bread) as fertiliser?
Yeast is nitrogen fixer but needs carbon and a fast available carbon like sugar so basically you trade sugar for nitrogen by growing yeast ,just like nitrogen fixing plants do.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sulphur
« on: May 20, 2020, 08:55:14 PM »
Lets talk about sulphur used as both,an antifungic and as an amendment to lower the ph of the soil.
I buy it marketed as an antifungic and i use it to lower the ph of the soil.
2 things ive learned so far:
- it kills Mycorrhizae simbiotic fungi.
- never mix it deep into the soil and never add it on the bottom of the hole before planting because it will be used by anaerobic bacteria and it will possibly kill the tree producing hidrogen sulphide just like in the Death valley.
I use it only on top of the soil where aerobic bacteria breaks it down and leaches the acid into the soil.

To make it work faster for bacteria to break down the sulphur its a good idea to buy sulphur that has nitrogen added to it because the bacteria blooms faster if it has a little nitrogen( i would also add a little sugar or vinegar as a carbon source for the bacteria but i didnt tryed this iet).
Urea pellets coated in sulphur i think are branded Osmocote ( this is a wide range of fertilisers brand but sulphur coated urea made them famous from what ive read),have both elements but i buy dirt cheap antifungic powdered sulphur wich also has both elements plus magnesium.

Altough its such a good soil amendment to lower the ph i dont see manny people using this and it also shows on the market as i couldnt find sulphur branded as a product to lower the ph here.
I think manny people will learn from this forum .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garden hose
« on: May 19, 2020, 07:47:30 PM »
Im thinking to buy a lay flat hose like firefighters hose but the smallest i could find wich is 1 inch.
Anybody has experience with these such small lay flat hoses?
Are they good?They tangle/kink ?
Or i should be better buying regular rubber round garden hose instead.
Looks like this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Leaves defficiency guide
« on: May 15, 2020, 11:02:07 AM »
This is quite accurate to get an idea about certain defficiencyes.Colors will vary from one plant to another but the drawing is quite accurate.

I have almonds with calcium deficiency that have curled leaves.Altough they are planted in soil with 8,5 ph,its sodic soil poore in calcium and adding a little gypsum is actually lowering the ph by one/ one and a half unit instantly.

And i have chlorotic looking Gevuina trees but its not just the iron thats not absorbed, there is also a magnesium defficiency ,nitrogen ( im affraid to fertilise them because they can die from fertiliser) and off course iron. All this because of high ph,but ive added sulphur( micronised - its used as foliar spray against insects) that has a little nitrogen and also a little magnesium in it.
Here its hard to find sulphur merchandised as ph lower but its verry common and in perfect ratio made and sold as a pest repellent. Its also dirt cheap unlike sulphur coated urea sold as expensive brands of fertiliser .
Its an easy and reliable way to lower the ph but not manny people use sulphur altough low ph loving plants like blueberryes are common and sold in every supermarket.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Achacha fertilisation
« on: May 13, 2020, 10:41:34 PM »
How to fertilise these?
I never fertilised my achacha seedlings otther than with foliar sprays.
Are they heavy feeders?
Would manure be a good fertiliser for them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New russian diaphragm well pump
« on: April 23, 2020, 07:57:41 AM »
I bought this diaphragm vibration pump today.
Its Ukrainean Taifun 2 but im really not sure if its original or a chinese knock off.
The original has copper wires inside but manny of the chinese copyes have aluminium wire coil wich fails( had one chinese pump like this that failed only after 2 months).
These pumps have only 200-300 watts consumption and they are the most efficient well pumps if the well its deep .
It says on it that can pump water from 90 meters deep with only 300 watts. This is serious pump wich makes Shurflo expensive diphragm pumps look like toys.
Shurflo also has bearings and motor so more moving parts to fail.
These type of pumps have no bearings ,no motor, just an electromagnet like a door bell or a haircutting machine that jumps up and down pushing a rubber diaphragm to pump water .
The magnet turns on and off at 50 Hz,the pulsing from the electric instalation.
Its diaphragm pump number 3 i will install in the well.
Sadly, the old ,36 years old original russian vintage diaphragm pump burned( water got inside near the cable).

Before i had like 7 otther pumps with motors and impellers, snails( shneck) and all failed including one expensive german pump that spilled her oil from around the motor rotor in my well water( was a high quality pump wich had the electric rotor spinning in a bath of encased oil ).

I paid just 45 dollars for this pump and its cheap for what it can do and the weight of the material ;D but im hoping it will last.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Wild asparagus
« on: April 18, 2020, 08:40:04 PM »
Today i found this growing wild on my land.
I tasted it and its much more sweeter than the supermarket bought asparagus and it also has a better flavor( tastes like roasted peanuts a little).
I colected a few,enough to fill a pan.
Quite an amazing find considering how expensive this is.
I think its a different specie from the store available asparagus .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting verry young seedlings
« on: April 07, 2020, 07:47:07 PM »
This is my favorite master grafter to take lessons from.
He uses regular alimentary plastic foil and grafts just germinated walnut seedlings.
The scions he uses are verry important he says, and uses the longest 1 year old scions from the tree.
The walnut its also a difficult tree to graft wich its almost impossible to grow by tissue culture and thats why the grafted walnuts are soo expensive compared to otther grafted trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Magnolia fruits question
« on: April 03, 2020, 05:13:39 PM »
I wonder ,could there be any magnolia fruit or seeds used for edible purposes?
The closest fruits related to magnolias are the annonaceae ,cherimoya, pawpaws ,etc, but with soo manny species of magnolia im intrigued none is edible.
All ive searched was with google and could not find anything about magnolias being edible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Distilled alcohol from fruits
« on: March 30, 2020, 11:15:07 PM »
Does anibody makes distilled alcohool from fruits ?
I mean the excess fruits that doesnt get eaten and rot.
In the past 2 years i wage war on my alcohol making suporting family member and i made compost from the rotten fruits instead of moonshine.
Now he got his revenge because i had to buy a medicinal alcohool bottle wich was nowhere to be found on this corona virus chrisis and i ended up buying tough alcohool ,96 degrees.
The price i paid for it has shocked me,it costs 20 euro a litter here .I didnt expected to be this expensive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wich garden shredder its better?
« on: March 25, 2020, 03:47:26 AM »
Ive decided to buy one of these because its cheap and i can make woodchips to use them as a mulch( i got tired of using mulch made from straws because it decays too fast).
These machines are small power but thats exactly what i want .I dont want big power chippers altough i do have 380 volts instalation ( and the regular 220v) and i have somme heavy duty 5-11 kw triphasic motors at home.
I could use those with a DIY machine but that seems quite dangerous and a lot more work and monney to build the machine than to buy one of these small wood chippers.

Im thonking to make like 4-5 cubic meters of wood chips per year wich could be crazy for such a small chipper but il sharpen the blades and hopefully il dont have too manny problems.
In case the branches are too thick il split them first.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Woodchips from chainsaw
« on: March 06, 2020, 03:21:32 AM »
I just used somme woodchips from the chainsaw cutting firewood to add as a mulch in my pots.
The problem is these woodchips have a smell of smoke/ exhaust and they probably have bar oil on them too.
Are they good or should i get rid of them?
