Which one has the bigger nut, dwarf Samoan or the Red Dwarf Malay?

While I am not the original poster, one thing I can tell you about the dwarf Samoan fruit that I've tried is that they all suck.

The fruit from different locations from different trees in S FL all had water that was not sweet. So if you're interested in good quality water and jelly you might want to reconsider the Samoan dwarf.

The fruit I had were from trees labeled as Fiji Dwarf which is supposed to be the same thing as the Samoan dwarf. If they're not, then forget everything I said above.

What? Dwarf Samoan are huge and tasty! I agree the talls are generally sweeter but Samoans are so refreshing. That said Hawaii and Florida have very different soils and climate.

I’m curious what the taste report is on red Malay water.

Looks good, interested

Hello Bush2Beach. I'm sorry for the very late reply. What sellers in Puerto Rico would you recommend? I haven't seen any sources for grafted durian trees from Puerto Rico online, though I've come across a nursery in Costa Rica and a seller in Hawaii, neither of whom ship. There is a website, Tropical Plantae, selling mangosteen and pulasan from Puerto Rico (I wonder if they might be affiliated with some Aguada, PR Etsy sellers carrying similar items), but the limited amount of reviews I can find online don't look good.

I’ve had great experiences ordering from Montoso Gardens. Tropical Plantae was a waste of time and money.

Cool thanks. You’re fortunate to have Frankie’s on island, Maui is pretty sparse.

Thanks for the info. Smaller spines, hermie and great taste sounds like a winner. Let me know if you want to sell seeds or know of a source.

…besides I've had several salak varieties and I really only like the red flesh which is hermaphrodite not male or female like the others and the spikes are way smaller.

I’ve just started growing salak, gula pasir, I’m curious if your preferred red flesh is the S. zalacca boni or S. sumatrana?

My advice would be to not use soil. Best results have been with either a slightly damp paper towel or vermiculite in ziplock on heat mat but not directly

Also, buy from reputable sellers who only supply fresh and viable seeds. This can take some trial and error and money lost. Rotten dried or full of bugs is not a great starting point.

Didn’t know a pink variety existed, very cool, thanks for sharing. Do you plan to offer seeds?

Thanks for the info. A compact beautiful plant with good fruit would be welcome closer to the home.

Bit off topic but related to peach pineapple, have you tried the Taiwanese Mango pineapple? Seen YouTube reviews where the mango rates higher than the peach.

I’ve never had that problem with sulfur. If it’s been sprayed you’ll smell it.

Looks like some combo of cold hot or dry, should grow out just fine.

Thanks for sharing these. What is Skotak Dwarf? Love the compact red leaves, also the lime green and red flower of Papuri is wow.

Wow, those look great! They must induce flowering for year round production. Most of my M-1 have just now started pushing flowers.

You mentioned the growers did breeding to develop Kauai white; is it distinctive enough from the other sugar loafs to merit collecting? Must admit in the past I’ve loaded a cart and then balked at the pricing.

Yeah, by the time I’ve replanted and maybe expanded the field I may have a few extra slips for friends. Tissue culture is the only way to make rare pineapples widely available.

Alcohol, soap, and hydrogen peroxide? What is the origin and effectiveness of this mix?

I’ve only read about wettable sulfur and have been using this regularly on my trees. It knocks the mite back for a time.

Yes, whatever the cause the Sumo brand is being damaged, especially when they charge a premium price.

Probably the packing house. In one video they sampled fruit from inside the canopy and north side of tree. Both were acidic and lacked full flavor, grower said these cannot go to market.

19
While there are three different accessions legally in the US that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily different genetically.

The videos I’ve watched on Sumo cultivation in US and greenhouse growing conditions of Shiranui in Japan show how fruit quality is greatly impacted by culture.

The poor fruit I had was from AC Sumo whose accession has the oldest and most direct lineage to original Japanese cultivar. Whoever grew these fruits did not take the same care I saw from a Sumo grower on YouTube.

20
Agreed. Bought 4 pounds of AC sumo last week, all were small and mostly sour.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Sumo seedling

This looks like the most recent sumo seedling thread.

Any reports on dekopan seedling fruit quality and tree vigor?

Thanks!

22
Thanks for confirmation.

I’ve eaten the fruit dried and blended frozen into smoothie. Both techniques were delicious but still itchy. Heating then freezing is a good idea. If it’s the same as taro then heat should do it, thanks!

23
Has anyone observed varietal differences in the amount of itchy mouth black stuff?

Such a delicious and productive fruit but even when fully ripe and dropping scales mine leave a scratchy sensation on the tongue and throat.

Think I’ve read somewhere that the black stuff is responsible but I’ve not tested this.

Have any of you tried pruning to encourage bud formation during coolest temps?
