Citrus in ground VS wine barrel
Pau:
I have a sumo, gold nugget, owari, kishu, and clementine that i want to plant either in half wine barrel or in ground. The dilemma is that i like to plant fruit trees where the landscape still looks nice and not a messy jungle. I am out of space and planting in ground will make my front yard look like a jungle.
I notice fruits like fig and guava does not taste as good in pot compared to ground.
I am wondering if quality of fruit for citrus also differs when grown in pot vs ground.
1rainman:
My meyer lemons tasted the same but yields are a lot lower. It would flower a lot and get a lot of baby lemons but not much making it to full ripeness compared to the ground.
Pau:
I have the same experience with my myer lemon. I removed
It from the wine barrel to make space for the mandarins. I hand watered it, so not sure if irregular watering is the problem.
I will add irrigation for all the wine barrels this coming spring.
MasOlas:
I’m in the same situation. Meyer went in the ground and produces but is covered with sooty mold to no avail. Valencia went in ground and is stunted. Moro Blood in a 15 gal is growing well and looking at it’s 25gal forever home.
All this to say I have dwarf mangos also looking towards growing up. I plan to keep them in 25 gal pots. Good luck on your endeavor.
Seanny:
For guava, a good cultivar tastes just as good in pot as in ground.
For a mediocre cultivar, the in pot fruit is trash.
I don’t have any experience with citrus in pot vs in ground.
