Hello Berns,
I would if there's no restriction/regulations from US (and Philippine) customs that might be in the way...: going out and coming into US. Not to mention the transportation time involved that might damage the scions.

So, it doesn't sound practical, or am I wrong??

Hi,

You're right sir.  I am not sure viability of scions of sapodilla.  Will research on sapodilla scions.

Berns

Hi,

Are you interested in exchanging scions outside US? I have Gonzalez, Mapino and Variegated chico varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pico and Edwards Mango
« on: June 22, 2017, 01:23:17 AM »
Hi,

Pico mango is mango variety in the Philippines. It is believed that this variety was introduced in Mexico in the Galleon trade.  It is an indo chinese mango variety. It is sour when green and very sweet when ripe much like carabao mango. Though being sold commercially, they are very cheap, being sold at .50 cents per kilo.

Another mango variety that was introduced by Oscar here in the Philippines is Edwards mango. Been collecting mango varieties that have carabao mango as cross. So far i have edwards, leonida and big boy.

Berns

Thanks for the info, Berns. I read that someone had a Lemon zest tree in the PH. I wonder if any other of the Zill series have made it there by now?

Hi,

Most probably, we have fruit growers or collectors have friends in this group.  It would be interesting to test the new zill mango varieties here. It will be good to test it in mango growing areas where there is pronounce dry season.

Berns

Hey Berns!
What cultivars of mango have you seen in the Philippines? You mention Edward. Any other of the florida varieties? How do they produce in PH? Do they use Potassium Nitrate to induce bloom? Thanks for your knowledge ;D
E.

Hi,

Many florida mango varieties have been introduced in the Philippines. Have friends in the rare fruit society of the philippines have grown florida mangoes. Irwin, tommy atkins, keitt, kent, baileys marvel, tyler premier, cushman, valencia pride, amrapali, glenn, rapoza, gouveia, r2e2, kensington pride, tom py kan, namfokmai, chokanan and many more.

Most florida mangoes fruit voluntarily here in the Philippines. Long sun exposure helps in making the mangoes sweeter. No need to flower induce with potasiumnitrate.

We only use potasium nitrate for carabao mango trees.

Berns

Hi,
Have id my unknown mango variety. Its called leonida mango. Was named after my friends wife. It was said a cross of carabao mango and kent.

I've come to really appreciate the Carabao mango this year. They are very sweet in my area and I enjoy them eaten cave-man right out in the field from tree ripe windfalls. I ate six today. They are a quality mango in my opinion.

Yup, taste is good but not a good producer. Biennial fruiting mango variety.  Same thing with edwards mango. Shy bearer.

Never heard of an apprenticed propagator from the Philippines, either.  I guess I'll have to enquire!

Sir,

His name was Eulogio Mallari, his brother a doctor from Florida, Wilfredo Mallari collected mango varieties there. They brought many florida mangoes in the philippines and established a nursery named Florida Tropicals. Mr. Eulogio Mallari was also responsible in propagating jin huang mamgo from taiwan when it was just starting to get famous. Thats his story though. They have both passed away. ill look for a picture.

Hi,

Wanted to share my harvest of edwards mango from the Philippines.  Fruiting for almost 3 years straight now. Really a shy bearer but fruits annually. But very true that it has a unique taste.

The scion was sourced from Oscar of fruitlovers from Hawaii. Great guy Oscar is. Very professional and great seed and scion seller.  If you read this, Thanks for the edwards mango. One of my wish list of mango varieties thst have a carabao mango as parent.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Leonida Mango Variety

Hi,

Have id my unknown mango variety. Its called leonida mango. Was named after my friends wife. It was said a cross of carabao mango and kent. He witnessed it being crossed in zill performance nursery where he apprenticed and worked as a propagator when he was in florida. He came back in the Philippines got scions and propagated this cross. He seldom promoted this variety from his nursery.

Anyone from florida have this variety? Maybe it was named differently there.  I could attest that it has a carabao mamgo taste especially when eaten as green mango and has hint of kent when ripe. But one thing i like it that tree has semi dwarf stature and has a good purple blush. It fruits regularly too.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Leonida mango variety for exchange
« on: June 18, 2017, 03:20:17 PM »
Hi,

Have id the unknown mango variety that fruited in the farm. The mango variety called Leonida. It was a cross hybrid from zill nursery.

My friend had an apprentice workshop from zill before. As a propagator. When he stayed at zills, he witnessed some experimental crossing of mango varieties. One of the varieties he did was a cross of carabao and kent. When he came back in the Philippines, he propagated it in the Philippines. Luckily got this variety he seldom promoted.

Anyway, wanted to exchange scions with new zill varieties mangoes. Pm me if you want to exchange scions.  I could attest that there is hint carabao mango in the fruit and with a kent taste.

Berns

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: variegated guava seeds..

Hi,

Are they true to type from seeds? I mean will the germinated seed also will be variegated fruits and leaves?

Regards,

Hi,

From our experience here in the Philippines. For humid and rainy areas, it might take 6-8 years. For dry areas and with assisted watering on the plant, it might take 8-10 years even more.  To make it fruit faster, add mychorrhiza, mulch and do double rootstocking using native langsat rootstock. Also, langsat also likes vermicast and vermitea. It might help in hastening juvenile stage of longkong plants.
