Atemoya pruning advise, newly planted Geffner

This Geffner Atemoya on Squamosa rootstock,  was planted about 6 weeks ago, full sun. Is growing well,  continues to push new growth. It is on my avocados fertigation program since I have not had time to isolate it, but seems to like it.  The tree is 6 feet tall now, as the picture shows one single branch with no intention of branching.  My question is: Do I top it now at 4 feet from the ground or do I let it go dormant (if it ever does, my avocados don’t ) and prune it in February or March?  Pros and cons of doing one or the other.

Short answer is prune in spring.

I would cut that off right about 2f high and strip the top few leaves to get some branches going.  Its not too late to prune, ive been tipping new cherimoya and atemoyas all summer and still doing them now.

Carlos, this is off topic but I see what looks like a row of avocado in the background. If they are avocado, what spacing did you use? They look close, maybe 8 feet(?) and I am considering planting close like that. What would you suggest?

Heres an atemoya and cherimoya grafted back in April Carlos.  If you pinch off the terminal growth it will force brqnches wherever you strip leaves.  The branches will only grow where leave are removed.  The petioles cover the new bud site.





Here you can see how the tips have been pinched andnspecific leaves removed where I want branches to grow in the outward direction.

I agree with Brad and I would cut it now. I had a single trunk cherilata that
grew about 5 feet before it naturally branched. It was so top heavy with 5 branches
going upwards and it couldn't stand with out a stake. I pruned/pugged it last October

What ever you do don't plant avocados at 8 ft in Florida may be you should open a new thread. This is a long explanation.

When I pruned that late new shoots grew only a foot.
